| I'm surprised you two have one game in common to be honest! Less surprised that Mas and I have none. SWH is an excellent pick though, one that I hope to devote more time to in this thread later. Maybe the music gets better later on but I can't remember a single good track from my starting of Night in the Woods - any you can link to, Mas? And Jas, genuine question: does Dark Souls have many actual tunes, or is it all just ethereal background warbling? I think Drunka might have done a feature on it a while back, but I can't remember how I found it. Also, I notice there's maybe half a Nintendo game in those two lists: not fans of Odyssey, Smash, Spla2n et al. Masnjas? |

For Dark souls it's just boss themes & I just really love the contrast of there being no background music during your normal adventure until you happen upon a boss. I do like the music of the games you mentioned there but my list was what just instantly sprung to mind. |

| I would like to change my Final Fantasy from IX to VII as it does have more memorable tunes.
Music in the Nintendo games you bring up are fine but the ones I mention I would buy the soundtrack on vinyl where I wouldn't Super Mario Odyssey. |

Aw, I really like background themes! I thought Hollow Knight, another game in a similar vein, balanced them really well for instance. Excellent boss tunes too, natch. |

| It definitely works well for Hollow Knight but I'm not sure it would for DaS, oh there is one exception in that the main hub (Firelink shrine) has it's own area theme.
In fact I'll never forget this one moment I had where after having a horrid time in Blighttown and getting entirely lost I eventually found an exit, then this piece of music started to play - I recognised it instantly & the sense of relief was something else because I knew I wasn't lost anymore. |

For the rest of you who haven't played the game ( ), what are your top five Switch soundtracks so far? I'd say it's this, Celeste, Odyssey, Smash, and then it depends if Wii U edits are allowed - if so Tropical Freeze, if not maybe Octopath. Good question! I'm probably going to share a lot of your Top 5, I reckon. In no particular order... SSBU Octopath Traveller Celeste The World Ends With You: Final Remix Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Chuck in Sayonara Wild Hearts if TWEWY is banned in your opinion for being a port. Agreed with Jas on that Firelink Shrine moment - I had exactly the same course of events and hearing that tune was just so relieving. |

| Somebody who's not me needs to do a big ol' SWH post in this thread. I don't remember enough of its indubitably fine tunes (beyond Begin Again). Also Jay, could I tempt you (or anybody else who fancies it) to throw some FETH tunes up in this thread? I love JRPG musics! (Not as much as Jay but still a fair bit.) |

| So, FE:TH. Whilst there's nothing as catchy as youuuu are the oooocean's grey waaaves or as blood pumping as Together We Ride, the soundtrack is pretty good unto itself. Now, I've only played 1.5 out of the 4 routes available in the game, so there may be some tracks I've missed, but hopefully I've caught some of the highlights. I'll be considerate and chuck anything super spoilery in a spoiler box. Right! The Edge of Dawn is FE:TH's attempt to capture the same feeling as ooooocean's grey waaaaves from Fates and whilst it's almost definitely a better song in regards to its instrumentation and whatnot, I still catch myself humming Fates' effort. Still, this tune pops up in a lot of the game's tracks in some shape or form, which is neat. It's a good track, for sure. Speaking of tracks that contain The Edge of Dawn... Fodlan Winds has Edge of Dawn running through its veins. Actually, a lot of FE:TH tracks do after digging through the OST! Fodlan Winds stands out to me as the standard bearer for battle themes for the game as it plays in a lot of the early chapters where you're most likely to have an impression made upon you. It's definitely got the sweeping heart pounding goodness you'd like in a battle track. I didn't trawl for many covers for this post, but I remember FamilyJules's cracking cover of Fodlan Winds and had to share it. A banger, as they say. How about something a bit different? Life At Garreg Mach Monastery is the track that plays in the first part of the game as you roam the halls of the Officer's Academy, chatting to students and performing different activities between battle. You'll spend a lot of time in the monastery, so it's good that the music isn't grating. Oh look, there's The Edge of Dawn again! It's very Harry Potter though, right? Like, purposefully so? Hm. - Spoiler:
It's not a massive spoiler that the game has a timeskip, but I figured I'll chuck this in a box to play it safe.
Chasing Daybreak plays in the early chapters of Part 2, and I think it does a grand job of highlight the tonal shift from happy school days to serious war times. There's some noticeable drums in there and a bit more of a serious tone to the track in there. Coupled with my boy Dimitri becoming KING OF THE EDGELORDS and wanting to murder everyone, it was definitely a shock to the system playing through Part 2!
- Spoiler:
Between Heaven and Earth plays at the heartbreaking return to Gronder Field. Before, your initial battle during the school days was a friendly bit of competition between the titular three houses, albeit tinged with sadness as you know this will never end well for the majority of the kids.
Several years later, embroiled in actual war, the three main countries have a showdown on Gronder Field in a definitive battle in the ongoing war. I think this track is suitably grand for such an important showdown, but it's definitely still somewhat sad at points with the melancholic strings and the sprinkling of piano here and there to drive home that you're killing your former students. And what happens to Bernadetta on this map if you don't deal with her yourself is a sin and I HATE EDELGARD AN- (and that's enough of that)
And that's enough of FE:TH music. Honestly, nothing super standout to me, but the tunes do their job well and I was nodding along going "oh yeah, I remember this one" going through the OST, so they left enough of an impression I suppose! |

| I think this is the first time I've heard the original of Together We Ride, and it works better on GBA than in Smash to my mind. Right, onto the FETH songs aaaaaand we're straight into staring at Edelgard's bottom. Jayseph 'Animeperv' Moyles strikes again. Yep, Edge of Dawn doesn't work as well for me as LiTAA. A problem with Japanese songs in English is that they often muck up the locations of the stresses, and this has that to a tee without sufficiently great music for me to ignore it. It then gets used an absolute belter of a track. Top-tier JRPG battling there. Idon'tcarefortheFamilyJules. Life at Garreg Monastery was never going to gel with me in the same way, as it's just... peaceful. That's all it is. That's not enough for me in general. I do like the organ though! Chasing Daybreak isn't quite up there with Fodlan Winds, but it's enough to get the blood pumping. BHaE is even better. I was a fan of that even before the choir kicked in. Good! Thanks for that, Jayseph! I apologise for ever doubting you. |

| I fucking LOVE edge of dawn. I listened to it over and over after finishing the game.
Sorry I don't come on this thread as much as I used to. Most of my internet time is either on mobile data or in public places, neither of which is ideal for sitting and giving music posts a good listen.
I have an idea for next month, in a similar vein to the pokemonathon, marioapalooza and whatever I called the smash one. I'll make a real solid effort to listen to everyone else's posts and have actual conversations. |

| Looking forward to your idea, and just generally having you back here when you can. I'm surprised to see BotW in there! (Less surprised, but pleased, about Celeste.) Is that based primarily on the 'actual tunes' they have in there (i.e. town pieces, Divine Beasts, fighting etc.), or the environmental music, or both? ...I could just go back to the first page and see for myself I suppose. |

| I haven't had as much time with it as I'd have liked, yet. I'm also regretting not putting Hollow Knight in there.
I would be genuinely just as happy with a top 5 of SWH HK SMO Dark Souls Monster Hunter Generations
as the top five I actually said. What a good machine for tooons! |

| 31 days has December - 30 if you don't count Christmas. 10 years were in this decade. Let us celebrate the music of the last . . . NIN TEN YEARS Every three days in December, I'll be taking you back to a year this decade and sharing my top five Nintendo tunes. I'm going to aim to pick from games that were released for Nintendo consoles, in the PAL region, during said calendar years. There may be some small exceptions because this is my party and I'm bald and I do what I want. 2010The year is 2010. NGamer is still on shelves. This forum is but a twinkle in Stu’s eye. UKIP are a small group of weirdos you occasionally hear about in Cornwall and other rural areas. Then, in May, Gordon Brown’s labour Government are ousted in a move which destroys the credibility of the Lib Dems forevermore, and we enter the darkest timeline under the leadership of a balloon-faced idiot who once fucked the decapitated head of a pig so he could get into the special rich boys’ club for hating the poor. Anyway, some good videogames came out. 5:Fly Me To The Moon - Climax - Bayonetta Originally written by Bart Howard, performed here by by Helena NoguerraThis is only so low in the list as it didn’t actually come out on a Nintendo console in 2010. I could save it, but when it finally arrived on Wii U it was on the same day as Bayonetta 2, and I’ll probably want to use a song from that game. It probably won’t be Moonriver, though. Bayonetta the first did such a great job of not only having a fun, jaunty version of a classic song but also working into the game and story very smartly. B2 just had a similar song out of obligation, I feel. Who knows how well Bayonetta 3 will use “When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie” . . . A fuckboi in a fedora does a pretty okay cover. 4: Goldenrod City – Pokemon Heart Gold/ Soul Silver Junichi Masuda, Gō Ichinose, Morikazu Aoki These beloved remake games have a whole OST full to bursting with memorable, exceptional songs but for me Goldenrod is the one which gets stuck in my head on the regular. I guess I spent a lot of time there when I first played through Pokemon Silver, back in the day? A guitar cover which makes it sound like the ol’ homestead being wistfully remembered by a mournful cowboy. 3: Deviljho – Monster Hunter Tri by Yuko Komiyama I didn’t play Monster Hunter Tri on the Wii, although my brother did. I didn’t even play a huge amount of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate a couple of years later. When I eventually did get super into the series, mostly through Generations, Deviljho quickly became one of my favourite monsters, perfectly accompanied by this tribute to the Godzilla theme. A cover by Falkkone, a big MH music coverer man. 2: Kill Or Be Killed – No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle by Akira YamaokaI’m a big fan of game soundtracks having a little song with lyrics, it always tickles my pickle for some reason. NMH2 goes one better by actually retroactively adding lyrics to the main theme of the series/ the previous game. This is really dumb but I love it. 1: Final Bowser Battle – Super Mario Galaxy 2 by Ryo Nagamatsu I’ve used this one at least twice before, in both the Marioaluigipalooza and in Smashtonbury, but fuck it I’m using it again. My all-time favourite piece of boss battle music, and honestly just straight up one of my favourite piece of music of all time. A couple of dudes dressed as Mario and Toad doing a piano duet. I’ll be back on the 4th to talk about 2011. In the meantime, here’s my non-gaming song of the year. |

| Nice to see someone wanting to do something like this but I don't really know what I can contribute as I'm not much for music in general.
If I do say a soundtrack is good though, you know it must do something right for me take notice.
Yeah might have been one of those in 2010 or later on some system but being just Nintendo makes this a real hard ask. |
