People have been on about these Battle Royale games for bloody ages, so I'm up for finally giving one a go.

I thought that was going to be Viva PiƱata Switch when it started. Even though Rare and MS and that. Oh well!

I did think we would get something MS x Nintendo outside Minecraft quick showing.
On Fortnite it's huge, the kids at work know I play games asked if I played, said no and that I was playing God of War they seemed so confused and asked me what fav game was said Wind Waker and they didn't know what Zelda was. But this the casual audience who play FIFA etc but why Fortnite is so popular, I do know some that are sort in between them and me that do play a lot still but do mix it up with what you would call hardcore games in comparison.

This had a decent showing on the Treehouse earlier but I still don't think I'll decide to play it since the BR genre in general seems so annoying to me, also a real shame this was also leaked well before the Direct as it's a pretty big deal for a lot a folk.

I'll give it a look - the hype must be justified to some degree considering how mad people are for Fortnite.

I'm prepared to give it another try, played it a few times but its never really clicked for me. The only thing I can put its popularity down to is everyone YouTube and the like playing it. Epic Games apparently sponsor your first video on the game which goes some way to showing why everyone gave it the time and seeing so much of it has helped it latch on to the younger crowd.
All that being said, it does have it's fun moments, they're just hidden behind a slightly broken game that usually involves the same strategies over and over again.

It's not as simple as being big because of the youtube stuff. These games got big on their own and then Epic did handle it well.
Anyway, it's downloading for me now, so I'll have actual thoughts soonish.
EDIT: So, I bashed out my first few games. The very first one was some big 50 v 50 team game, which didn't sound as exciting, and I died from getting caught outside the zone. No thanks!
After that I had a few goes on the actual Battle Royale. I can definitely see where it gets fun: the big map full of players and the one death per game make the stakes feel much more real than in a typical deathmatch shooter. Personally, I think I'd get more immersed in a more straightforward version like PUBG, but there's fun here.
On the other hand, that classic feeling online games give you, where it's not fun when you're not good yet, is worse than ever here. I finished in a reasonable position if I hid right on the outskirts and crept in, but that was boring. On the other hand, if I dropped in somewhere fun, grabbed some gear, and cracked on it was more enjoyable but I died after one or two encounters with the enemy.
I think I'll keep having pops at this now and then, especially if I get a chance to squad up with friends, but for now I'm still hesitant to say if this is really for me or not.

I feel TSmurf hit the nail on the head as I can tell you my experience of people I know and if I look at my friends list on an Xbox or PS4 that core isn't playing it but the younger kids who play the one or two games a year and those are the games that make games popular.
I did play some last night, played 50v50 and didn't know it was, so didn't know why I wasn't killing anyone when I was shooting them the I played some duos with EofGiz after we figured out we have to added each other game, we did okay seeing mic isn't up yet till Thursday (yeah I know we could have used Skype), then I played some games on my own and got to the last 20 both times.
I found this to be far more polished then PUBG and due to art-style was far more enjoyable then what essentially looks like a early realistic 360 game even on One X.
The thing is Crazy Justice is out today and that looks more appealing as in it you play as different characters and has a Story Mode, Team Deathmatch, and Capture the Flag as well but isn't free of course.

After writing down a list of games I want to complete this morning, I came home from work this afternoon and played a load of Fortnite and Spla2n.
I had some games with Shanks in duos which was fun, but with us both being crap and not having voice chat we didn't do very well.
I've had some other half-decent games, and can pretty consistently finish in the twenties. There's just an awful lot of downtime . . .
One thing that is making my experience more enjoyable is concentrating on the little bonus challenges and daily tasks and stuff. I'm obviously not going to be straight-up winning games yet, but all that jazz makes it a little more rewarding while I'm still learning the game.
I'm not gonna love this game the way I do Splatoon, but there is a real satisfaction in winning a shootout here which just doesn't exist in games where you come straight back.

The problem for me with Fortnite is the opposite though, it feels absolutely terrible to lose one! The gun mechanics are so weird and awkward that I've had several times where I've had the drop on someone and still ended up the dead one. I'm sure it's something you can overcome with a lot of practice, but I'd rather just jump back on Titanfall, Siege or Overwatch and get some good shoots in.

Well, that's exactly what people say about these games: high highs, but equally low lows.

Something that I feel would make it more fun for me that would probably upset the hardcore Fortnite fan in randomly generated maps, sure its massive but after so many games most will find a routine and stick to it, sure the circle is always different but not knowing what's available when you land would make it more exciting and competitive for me.

I don't know about randomly generated maps, but a nice selection of a few different ones would be better than just the one.
Me and my housemate were taking turns playing this the other night and we were doing dreadfully. Then he went to bed and I had a game where I reached second place, with five kills! A proper, nail-biting, successful run like that is genuinely top tier online gaming. Is it enough to make up for the game's other frustrations? Maybe not indefinitely, but it's worth playing a bit in order to get a couple of good stories.

EofGizmo and Me tried the voice chat and it just works, which makes me why do we have an app for Splatoon and Payday has none at all, when I can plug my headphones and play.
I know most of you will say I use Skype but still this something positive and should be universal on Switch.

I've always said that for any game it is up to the dev to implement voice chat however they want & a system wide party chat isn't necessary it just makes it a bit more convenient, for splatoon I imagine Nintendo put a wall there with the app so it is only friends chatting and not an open lobby of teens or adults that should know better calling a 5+ year old all sorts of names.
For Payday maybe it was a time thing or they couldn't get it running to a standard they want so it was cut or maybe it takes more work than we think to get it working.

I can see it being a good game to watch someone who knows what they're doing: it has tension in buckets, so of all the games to "shout at the TV" at, this is probably quite a good one.
I've said this elsewhere before but my experience has been the same as Drunka's; I can place well if I hang back and don't do anything reckless - boring! - Or I can get stuck in and get a couple of kills (or just instantly get caught out) - Not boring but still not particularly exciting; don't understand why I'd play something like this when I could step into Overwatch or something.

We did have a bad time. Just seemed like we kept finding the "God" tier players who'd one shot you.

If it's brought Shanks back to GNamer, then this game has already been worth the price of entry.

Won two games back to back last night in a three player squad with housemates on switch B)
May as well quit now, that's like a 50% squad win rate on my stats!

You've peaked now. Any future games of Fortnite will lead only to disappointment.

I think I've caught the bug for this, I'm by no means one of these expert builders but I've been getting a lot more kills and quite a few top 10 finishes which is just making me want to win more. I think it was already mentioned how the game can offer some tense moments when there's a bit of a standoff and it's absolutely right.

Then there's the moments where you find someone to kill, they end up as bait as they are just soo bad at the game, you get ganged up on then said bad player bm's you

Look gents, I know. I know that there's too much negativity going around. I know this is a nice space for positive chat. But sometimes it's just fun to lay into shit people being shit.
With that in mind, Kenichiro Yoshida is a shit person being shit and he should feel shit for it.

He isn't wrong in a sense but Sony are back to their arrogant ways and one of the reasons I'm leaning more on Xbox and why likes of Jay has said he's more likely to go Xbox next gen.
But we've seen this before from both of them, that I wouldn't be shocked to see MS become the bad guys again and Sony the good guys at some point.

I'd like to think that after the colossal cock-up that was the One launch that Microsoft will be as consumer friendly as possible moving forwards, even if they're the market leaders. I can't see them reneging on cross-play though - surely with PC/Xbox being two pillars of their gaming family, they'd want cross-play to be a big deal. It's good to see Nintendo getting involved with that too as that seems like something that they'd historically put a kibosh on.
