Featuring hand-drawn visuals from the team behind 2017’s gorgeous Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap remake, Streets of Rage 4 builds upon the classic trilogy’s gameplay with new mechanics, a fresh story and a gauntlet of dangerous stages with a serious crime problem.
...this was unexpected to say the least!

It was and all I can say is SEGA need to keep doing this let others use the IP.

Not keen at all on the art style but I hope it turns out to be good.

Aye, I'm with Jas in that the art style isn't sitting right with me either, but so long as it plays a treat and has a cracking soundtrack like its predecessors, then it won't bother me too much. Awesome to see SEGA reviving the series though, brilliant stuff.

The art style seems to match that of the developer's Wonderboy game. Awesome news none the less, it's something I didn't realise I wanted but really should have.

IGN showed off some new screenshots for Streets of Rage 4
I can't pinpoint exactly what's changed between the trailer and the .GIF on that linked article, but the art style of the game is growing on me and looks pretty good in motion. Maybe it's a higher resolution in the .GIF compared to the video? In any case, I'd forgot that this was coming out next year!

Good to see that things are bubbling away nicely with this. It's definitely one of my most anticipated games for 2019. 👍

Same here! It's been ages since I've played a new beat-em-up game - messing about with River City Ransom on the NES Online feature was fine and all, but nothing matches up to the Streets of Rage series in my eyes.

Something of a leak came out for this yesterday, which revealed lots of smart stuff. That was then followed up by an official video:
Not much of that is a big surprise, to be honest. But it’s great fan service, and it makes me more excited for the game. It’s somewhat amusing that they’ve left the Streets of Rage 3 soundtrack off though. Couldn’t believe how much they arsed that up on Mega Drive!
An Australian eShop listing also went live yesterday, initially revealing that Streets of Rage 4 is out on Thursday 23rd April for $24.99AUS. The publisher has since denied that, but this can’t be far off, and that sounds like a reasonable price.
Looking forward to it?
EDIT: It's on the UK eShop, £22.49 on Thursday 23rd.

Oh, all that retro stuff looks quality! The classic soundtracks and sound effects - I'm all over that. The price is a wee touch higher than I'd like, but I think I've got some Gold Points to shave it down to £15-20, which is more reasonable.

So this is reviewing really positively, with Scully himself declaring it the best SOR yet. I was interested in a new SOR, but now this becomes a must-own. Anyone picking this up?

Great to see this reviewing well. The last side-scrolling brawler I played was Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, which you can't even buy anymore . It's been too long since something like this has been on my radar.

Absolutely buying this, and planning on playing it over the weekend. I'm very excited for this.

What a game. It felt like an evolution of River City Ransom - brilliant stuff.
I'm glad to see that Streets of Rage 4 is looking like it'll be similarly brilliant. There's always a concern with these retro revivals that it could all end up being a bit wank, but it's great to see that's not been the case here. Me and Jas were talking about rocking through this co-op online, which should be a good laugh.

Double post, but me and Jas did indeed rocket through this! This is definitely one that's meant to be replayed with other characters and it seems as though we've missed secrets along the way too.
I think this is a cracking wee game. It feels like Streets of Rage through and through - I was initially a bit concerned that the art style would put me off, but it looks great in motion and coupled with the awesome soundtrack, I'm all about it. The action is brilliant too. The combos feel really satisfying to pull off and there's a bit more than just mindlessly bashing away. I think this is an easy recommendation!

Agreed! I think I'll be picking away at the plat trophy for this by maybe doing my single player runs here and there.

I'm not quite finished with my first playthrough of this, but first impressions are massively positive. This is a legitimately great game.

There were several limited editions announced for this, but now it appears that it's getting a plain, standard, unlimited physical release in July:
People might think that the price is high, but I don't agree: the first two Streets of Rage games have given me years of entertainment for a relatively small sum of money, and I think Streets of Rage 4 will be the same.

I really ought to go give this a runthrough solo - I think any game can be enhanced playing with a buddy, but I'm confident this will hold up in a single player environment too.
Did you get round to finishing it Cappa?

Beat this last night for the first time and I agree with all the positive feedback. It successfully captures the look and feel of the first games but there's enough depth here to keep me coming back for those better scores. I wasn't keen on SOR3 but the first two are infinitely replayable in my eyes, but for little reward. They were just fun to run through in 20 minutes. The fact that this game has 12 stages and they run a lot longer is great and justifies the £20 pricetag. I am looking forward to playing through as the other characters (I played as Axel, natch) and seeing what I unlock, but also just trying to platinum a game whilst having a ton of fun for once. A lot of platinums are laborious but I reckon this will be a reet laugh.

I keep returning to SoR4 - it's definitely crept into my Top 25 games - possibly Top 5. The 5 to 10 minute length of each level is perfect for just having a quick game and there's so much variety once you unlock the secret characters. It's a lot more challenging than the original Mega Drive games too, although that's maybe because I've spent years playing the first two entries and memorised the enemy behaviour. How Lizardcube managed to put all the previous Streets of Rage characters in here and it still works, despite them all playing differently, is remarkable. Looking forward to the DLC.

I've not gone back to this as often as I'd have expected a year ago, and that's probably because of the challenge. I was barely scraping past most levels on Normal difficulty, even after using a few continues.
Even if I don't prefer it to Streets of Rage 2, there's still absolutely tons to love about it though, and Lizardcube have done an amazing job right enough.
