GNamer's 3rd Favourite Pokémon Game:
Spoiler:
Pokémon Red and Blue 43 points, 8 votes, 0 firsts
Choice tune: Lavender Town I literally had to play with the sound off if I went to this town at night as a kid. Spot-on heebie jeebies.

I loved these like we all did back in the day, but having replayed this when it was ported to the 3DS Virtual Console, they're a bit too dated to rank highly on a list like this in my eyes. I still respect the hell out of them for being the games of my childhood, mind, and I still get a nostalgia rush hearing the music tracks from this.
The originals, unbalanced and filled with frustrations as they were, deserve some credit for introducing us to the wonderful world of Pokémon. Also: Jynx. Brr.
Easy to understand, yet incredibly diverse and seemingly infinite. Playing together with just about everybody at my primary school was an unforgettable gaming experience. I loved that sense of community when all of us where watching the cartoon on SM:TV Live and trading the cards, but undoubtedly the best thing about Pokemon was the games.
I say:
The original. I knew Balla was gonna come in and give it the big "I don't go in for nostalgia", "new is always better" bollocks, but there's an adventurousness and mystery to these games that only comes from them existing in their own little void before the media behemoth that is Pokémon took off. The plinky plonky Lavender Town music, the diary entries telling the story of Mewtwo's creation, the Dark Souls-esque progression structure, it nailed everything so hard. Plus, you can tell the game is a labour of love by a small team, just barely holding together. If you pick at any of the edges, the came unravels in glorious fashion.
Really, the ultimate proof that these games are phenomenal and worthy of recognition is that it took two decades for the series to do anything different. The mechanics expanded, visuals and music and writing became more complex, but the skeleton of the games didn’t really change from what they were in Red and Blue to what they were in X and Y. Even if a game is improved upon, being the first to do everything is worthy of accolade, as this vote has already proven.
I reckon these are pretty exciting times! HGSS are out of the runnings, the originals are out of the way. What's gonna win? Platinum? Channel? Quest? Will X and Y ride the 3D graphics wave? Are Sun and Moon recent enough in the memory to stick?

I didn't vote for Gold and Silver as I voted for HGSS as those are better verisons of Gold and Silver which I would say are the best Pokémon games.
I felt it was better to give what be number 11 the 10th spot then have Gold and Silver at 2nd and HGSS at 1st.

Exactly. I voted for Gold/Silver and not HG/SS, so we ended up with a split vote.

Great write-up as to why the originals still hold a magical feeling, Drunka.
I ranked R/B pretty low in my top 10 as the nostalgia factor can only go far, but what a winning formula they cottoned on to back in the very first game.

If Sun and Moon somehow rank I'm going to be... Disappointed. Especially if Black and White and/or Platinum (both infinitely better crafted games) get snubbed for them. I tried to replay Sun and Moon, and being completely honest ingrown toenail extractions are more enjoyable (certainly more mentally stimulating. And no, this is not hyperbole, I genuinely found it a preferable experience). For every seeming step forward they also regressed the series in incredibly disheartening and tedious ways, somehow making me more interested in spinoffs like Go than any future main-series instalments. Have they killed my passion for the franchise? Well, absolutes are too strong, however several other games (YuGiOh Duel links and GO) have inserted themselves into the space Pokemon once held, so they very well might have.
Certainly if I do play a Pokemon game again it's likely going to be a nuzlocke of White or prior titles. If I were to write a review for Sun and Moon today it would look drastically different to what it did. They're the epitome of a piece of media that you find amazing on your first impression, only to find it doesn't hold up in any way upon a second experience.
And I too chose not to vote for the remakes over the originals. I only wanted to vote for one of the visits to Johto, and one set of gen 4 games. Same for gen 3 and the Kanto remakes. Meanwhile everything from gen 6 onward was completely absent from my votes, too many spinoffs that were more fun to play.

Choice tune: The One Who is Captivated by Equations N's theme is the obvious choice.

These did a great job of recreating that sense of adventure that made the first two generations so vividly memorable. Although, to be honest, I don’t remember Black & White nearly as much as those. But with the graphical overhaul, experimental gameplay and a not-all-that-shite story too, it’s a trip that I fondly remember enjoying at the time! Looking back on it, I really liked that they removed so much of the utter bollocks (the worst being the capped use of TMs and the status effects outside of battles) and added loads of quality stuff, especially online.
They went out of their way to recapture a feeling of freshness the series had lost, and dare I say they did exactly that. These games are second only to Platinum in how well balanced they are, and honestly if a few of the twists near the end hadn't been so hackneyed and a few more genuinely challenging fights had been thrown at the player before the elite four I'd probably consider these the apex of the series.
Here we go, big claim: I think two of Black & White’s all-new starters were better than the originals. I do! For a game that aims to create an entirely new set of monsters, that’s a good starting point.
The darkest of the main series games, quite tough and a sort of reboot with no older region Mon until after completing the story.
It took a chance with giving us an entirely new roster of critters for playing through the story initially with, and I think it paid off. Coupled with the best story in the series today and you've got the Pokémon game that drew me back into the series.
It was great experiencing an entirely new batch of Pokemon and discovering them from scratch
I say:
Generation Five made the kind of graphical leaps that should have happened years sooner. It had an involved story, a cool urban aesthetic and loads of new Pokémon all the way through the story. An absolute banger of a pair of games. I know some people complain that the game is more N's story than the player's, but what a story it is. Plus, it has a pair of 9/11 Jet Engine dragons, which is just ridiculous.
I'm not sure what to do next. The Pokemon vote, to the surprise to nobody, didn't really come to a conclusion. If I collect up any monster or family of monsters that has more than one vote, I think I can find six. . .
As for the main series vote, the top 5 are the same as the top 5 overall, albeit the order is a little different. I don't want to post it before the winner, as it might reveal which Pokemon eLectronic Application Toy Issued by Nintendo's eUropean Movement is the winner. I dunno, I'll wing it, it normally works out okay for me.

Hard to begrudge RBY their influence. Incidentally, I voted for both GSC and HGSS. It can be done.
BW were very impressive for what they did. Introducing an all-new 150 was bold. I'm glad to see them place. N was great too.

Same as I missed R/S/E as I was that age, where I felt to old for Pokémon and Gen IV didn't look good at all.

Think you said similar yourself about one of the Pokémon games, that you were playing it and your friends had moved on. I was one of those friends.
Black/White brought me back to the games, as now I'm not 13, I don't care if it's cool or not, I just want to play the good games.

Platinum, the game that completely failed to get me back into the main series and actually put me off

I didn't like Sun and Moon, that makes them the objective worst video games in the history of the medium. I also despise avocados, making them the single worst vegetable to pair with food. And eggs, do not even get me started on the revolting things that are boiled, scrambled, or poached eggs.
Don't get me wrong, at the end of the day everything is subjective, but if you're going to throw claims such as "it's actively bad" around you should back it up with well articulated reasoning. Otherwise all you're basically doing is setting out some very mouldy bait.

The word to best describe Diamond, Pearl and Platinum is "mouldy" right enough. They were completely knackered when they came out. I can't remember any of these having a single fresh idea. Just a very basic, ordinary time of it, really. The new monsters they added were baws too - I just stuck with a team of old ones from Gen 1, because everything after was that unappealing. It's a completely missable era of the series.
They put me off a little bit too. Here, you sensed that it was all downhill for Pokemon. It needed a swift boot up the arse on DS, mad that it took six years and three games after Rudy/Sapphire/Emerald - themselves being fairly rudimentary Pokemon games - for that to happen.

GNamer's 6 Favourite Pokemon
One:
Eevee and Family Votes: 2 for Eevee, 1 for Flareon, 1 for Umbreon, 1 for Sylveon
You said:
Eevee. What's not to love? Plenty of options for evolution and cute as heck.
Umbreon
Along with Oddish, Umbreon is the only other Pokémon that I own merchandise for. I was a big fan of Eevee during my original playthrough of R/B/Y, but I wasn't massively enthused by any of its evolutions. Enter Umbreon. Thanks in part to my time with G/S/C falling more in the evening time, I was chuffed to bits to see Eevee had been given a new pair of evolutions. The black and gold design coupled with the fact that it used one of the new types had me adoring Umbreon from the word go. Umbreon is fantastic.
Flareon
Best Eevee evolution, cool dude
I say:
Nintendo seem desperate to convince us that Eevee has been the franchise' second mascot all along, and it seems they were actually right all along.
Two:
Mewtwo Votes: 2
You said:
The original don of Pokemon, he came out with one of the wisest quotes in the world today and is great fun to use in Smash Bros.
Or should I say Lord Frieza? Yeah, this guy's going to be on anyone's list if they grew up with the og cartoon I suspect, and for obvious reasons.
I say:
There have been more than a few times in my life that this 'mon would have made my list, for all of the reasons in our second comment there.
Three:
Squirtle Votes: 2
You said:
Forever the best starter, the Squirtle squad helped cement it's place as one of the coolest, it manages to remain badass at all evolutionary stages.
I say:
I was a Squirtle boy back in the day, and the line does still hold a certain spot in my heart.
Four:
Rayquaza Votes: 2
You said:
Best legendary
Badass Chinese Dragon, what more needs to be said? He's strong, looks amazing, and is the cover legendary of one of my favourite games growing up.
I say:
I like Rayquaza in principle, but I don't know if I've ever owned one? I'm excited to get to the ORAS endgame and spend time with the big green lad.
Five:
Bewear Votes: 2
I said:
The only one on this list I voted for - I voted for all four big bears, along with Sableye and Cubone - and probably the one of my six I'm least attached to. It doesn't look enough like a real bear! Still good and I love it and I am its friend.
Six:
Rowlet and Family Votes: 1 each for Rowlet, Dartrix and Decidueye
You said:
Rowlet
This one did well to capture my heart so quickly, the whole evolution line is ace and it wears a freaking Bowtie.
Dartrix
What’s better than an owl with a bow tie? An owl with a bow tie crossed with Miles Edgeworth, that’s what.
I say:
Rowlet is a good girl or boy.
There you go. The next post I make will be the winning game and the Main Series Top Five.
