| I'm with you there, Jayster. A controversial sound to be sure. - Athrun feedback:
5. Yay for Valak and Mechonis Field getting mentions! I thought about including XC in my own, but in the end, I can't remember a single battle theme bar the final one: You Will Know Our Names is, indeed, bobbins relatively speaking. Still, a fine choice. 4. No pitchforks here, this was damn good music (since you didn't mention Black Tar or the Neo LA themes), overshadowed since the game itself wasn't as good. Using this thread to advertise Nontendo work, though? For shame! (Also, of all the options, you went with the Ma-non theme? Hey, each to their own!) 3. Now we enter uncharted territory for me... 2. Well obviously Hoshido's music is going to be right up my alley! There's a motif at 0:29 of 'Alight' that's directly out of Okami. And then that Nohr theme's all ethnic and folksy, also really my thing... Sigh, I wish the Fire Emblem wasn't a strategy series so that I could enjoy playing through these. And you didn't even pick Lost in Thoughts/End of All! 1. This is pretty standard JRPG stuff, electric battle theme 'n' all. Possibly I'd get more out of it if I played the game. As things stand, this is still good, but definitely my least favourite of your five.
There's definitely a JRPG 'style' that's all overblown bombast and scale, and that some people will love and others won't so much. I think it's easy for JRPG musics to merge into each other, a trap I feel your last option falls into for me. But there are also those that defy the stereotype (XCX). It remains one of my favourite genres for music. I may poke fun, but I definitely see your point in picking five JRPGs. |

Good pick I don't know what Balla's on about, to be honest, loads of this music is lodged in my head. To be fair though I very rarely pour the necessary time into JRPGs, so this is the only one that's had a chance to get lodged in my head. The reason being, of course, that it's the only good one :p - Athrun out of patience wrote:
- Main Theme by Yoko Shimomura
I love this one. I do love a nice little piece like this, as much as the most bombastic and over-the-top theme. When a soundtrack can mix the two, you know you're onto a winner! - Ath you got what it takes wrote:

Very emotional, much sad, so drama. Good shout on not going for the really obvious ones. Good picks! - Ath a go hero wrote:

As I said earlier, I've got a lot of time for the XCX soundtrack, even though the game left me disappointed. Looking forward to being reminded/ surprised by some tunez. - Athrotron888 wrote:

Weird one this, in the best possible way. Makes me think of a Pokémon evil team, for some reason. - Atherforth Dumbledore wrote:
- Noctilum, this one's more on the bombast end of things and absolutely nails the feel of exploring a gigantic alien jungle.
You sum Noctilum up pretty perfectly yourself. I think explorationy field music stuff was the best thing about XCX and this was a good'n. The various other works you shout out were all killer no filler. I remember people being excited about Sawano's involvement, and I get why. - Once you've Athrun, you Ath 'em all wrote:

I didn't get far in Bravely myself, having burned myself out on other games, but it looked and sounded beautiful so I'm looking forward to clicking these. - Atharice wrote:

Delivers on a baddy theme, quite cartoonish I feel? I expect it works well in context. - Athrunes Suggest a Long Winter, M'Lord wrote:

I always like a good end boss theme, and this certainly delivers. - Ath we got the full Japanese version? wrote:

Oooh, I like this one! The others I could take or leave, but work well enough in-game. - Athro Samurai wrote:
- Number 1: Etrian Odyssey IV Legend of the Titan
This is the only one of your picks I have literally no experience with, so I don't know what to expect here at all. And you've put it in first! - A Dance With Dragons: Athrer The Feast wrote:

Ah, that was quite nice! Reminds me, and I can't explain why, of the end of Pokémon 2,000. - Athrur Weasley wrote:

Nice enough Green Hill Zone Stuff, I suppose. - Are You Athrun a Laugh? wrote:

Now we're talking, I like this! At first, I thought it sounded more Street Fighter than JRPG, then the melody kicked in. Top stuff. - Athrunbow wrote:

Villainous stuff. I like. - Ath Last! It Ends! wrote:

This is very cherry.
Yeah, pretty good picks. Very Athrun. I'm choosing to ignore the sick blasphemy being spoken about my beloved Inklings. |

| Hey, nobody's fault if the Zelda series has great music! And there are some top picks there. Grand to see The Last Story's flagship piece getting an outing too, it's truly magical (although I remember maybe one other music from that game). And I didn't know what it'd be under FFVI, when you posted that I assumed Dancing Mad!
ARMS' main theme is pretty great, isn't it? Perfect for getting you pumped up. I can imagine Rocky entering the ring to this. |

I was going to post that! Yeah, great piece, genuinely sounds like it belongs on television coverage of a big sporting event. |

| - Balla response response:
5: Yeah, most of the battle themes in xenoblade don't really cut it in my opinion. One Who Gets In Our Way is a good boss theme though, but it's the only one that honestly stands out. Or maybe it's the use of bells in it! Either way for me Xenoblade's ost shined most outside of battle.
4: I actually like Black Tar in a guilty pleasure kind of way, terrible lyrics and all. The second phase anyway, that beat gets me every time! And I am and will continue to be unashamed at shouting out Nontendo work! Besides I can't really mention how Xenoblade X's music was a bit of a letdown as a fan of the composer without posting a few tracks by him to illustrate the point. (It's not really Nontendo when it's non-gaming anyway!) And of course Ma-non! It's one of Sawano's more unique pieces, plus I love its cheerful energy. The alternative was going full edgelord with that awesome rockestra Ganglion theme that only got used for Miss Tentacles.
2: What is it that you don't like about SRPG's if I may ask?
1: It's funny that you would say it's typical of the genre as that's one of my bigger complaints of Xenoblade's soundtrack actually (hence the lower ranking. I like it because most of it's actually very subdued, with the bursts of energy mostly stemming from either battle themes or the occasional bombastic overworld theme. Plus it goes a lot more pure-orchestra than most RPGs, most of them tend to always fuse orchestral with rock and the like, plenty of themes in this one stick strictly to orchestra.
- Drunka response response:
Holy name-puns batman! 5: Hah, I can name at least ten JRPGs superior to Xenoblade! 4: Now that you mention it I can sort of hear that evil Pokemon team thing going on. Now I can't unhear it! And yep, I only wish we'd had something like this work of electronic perfection in X's soundtrack, despite what I said to Balla about Black Tar being a guilty pleasure, well, we could've had far better. 3: Yah, that first theme is basically used in cutscenes where the baddies are having conferences as the "Council of Six". If you want a better tune for out-of-context you might prefer to check out this creepy almost x-massy boss theme. The bosses were just as nightmare inducing as the theme. 2: I think the term "it's complicated" probably sums up my relationship with Fates. 1: At least someone liked that one!
I'll start looking over the other top five's in a day or two! |

No good at them old chap, simply no good at them! All the 'thinking five steps ahead' jazz has never been a fit for my naturally linear brain, be it chess or Starcraft. Actually it was the Advance Wars series that put me off strategy in general (specifically the apparently tricky-even-for-the-series Dual Strike), but I did pick up Awakening and fear of permadeath practically paralysed my process. Poo! I did enjoy the Luminous Arc games more than I probably should have done (until Stella Glow took the creepiness factor a bit too far), but they were relatively easy and one could grind. I've not been tempted back to FE, especially not Conquest. Better make that feedback relatively timely, seven posts to go! (Also this is now the most viewed thread on the forum. Half the views were probably me...) |

| - Balla's Top Five:
5: Nice pick, as would just about any theme from the game be! 4: Destroyed Skyworld's vocal chorus totally sounds like something by Yuki Kajiura, me likey. And yeah, that remix of Gerudo's Valley is absolutely smashing ( ). That all said I'm probably going to commit sacraleige here and admit that overall I'm not the biggest fan of the Smash Bros soundtracks, most of the time the rearrangements end up missing the mark for me, or they end up being pieces of music that just don't fit the game with its demented and chaotic gameplay. 3: I never did get to play the original Banjo-Kazooie, instead I spent most of my time playing the supposedly inferior Bango-Tooie. Still the music was pretty sweet, and I hear that it wasn't just Tooie. 2: Yeah, if I'd been doing a top six this game's ost would've made mine too. The era that Nintendo finally joined the modern age and updated their music quality, and boy did they do it right. Also Battlerock Galaxy >>> Gusty Garden. 1: In a way it's kind of poetic that I don't get the same out of your number one, maybe I just don't have the same connection because of my lack of experience with its source material.

| Re. 1, that it is - it's a shame, but you're not the only person to have said it. It wasn't even a bad game, it was (I felt) good elevated to great by the soundtrack... but I guess merely 'good/great' isn't enough for a 2D platformer on a Nintendo console, is it?
I still preferred it to both Rayman Legends and SM3DW though, almost entirely because of the music. Can't remember a single level off SM3DW, can only remember the musical ones off RL. DKCTF sticks in my mind because of what I associate the music with.
So I'm apparently the opposite of all of you, which... is interesting I guess. |
