40GB PS3 wireless problems?

I recently sold my PS3 40GB because I needed the money and was planning on getting a Slim or Super Slim. But now the PS4 seems so close I'm wondering if I'd be better off just buying another old 40GB (which I can get for less than I got for selling mine)
The problem is my old 40GB had terrible wireless internet, I know PS3s are usually slow anyway but mine was really bad, definitely broken, my Vita and PSP were both faster and the PS3 was faster if I connected it to my laptop with a wire and used my laptops wireless internet.

What I want to know is if this is a one off problem or is it something that's wrong with most or all 40GB PS3s? and I'm not talking the usual slow internet I mean download speeds far less than 1mb despite having very good internet
Downloads that should take minutes end up taking days, I cant connect to any multiplayer games at all and just loading the leaderboards on Tokyo Jungle takes 10 to 15 minutes every time
So does anyone else here have an old 40GB PS3 and is the wireless internet ok on it? or should I fork out the extra money for a new super slim?

I'd just recommend getting a newer model, I've heard the problems with the old ones from others and they sound like far more hastle than they're worth. More memory is always better too, not to mention YLOD in older models.

My PS3 is the model after the 40GB - I forget the exact size - and the wireless is complete pants. My Vita isn't the fastest, but it's miles faster than my PS3. I'd take a punt on a more recent model.

My PS3 is the 160gb and its wireless cuts out from time to time

my 60gb no lower contects wirelessly, i rang sony there anserws was use a cablw which i do or buy a new one. i would say a buy a new one if you really want a ps3 but shopto and game are now selling 40gb used consoles for £69.99 which cheap

I have this problem! It's so bad that I have to download system updates via a computer and transfer them over through USB.

One thing I do hope is that it is indeed due to the particular PS3 model but in my case it is my router which causes the problems - my old router worked perfectly with the PS3.

This thread doesn't fill me with confidence about the 40GB PS3 I've just bought. Hmm. I'll let you know how the wireless is when I get it delivered.
