| It's time for Link's first handheld adventure. It's a Zelda I've never actually played, so I'm looking forward to this!
Quick question before we start - do you guys recommend I play the original or should I try and find Link's Awakening DX? |

| Good question! DX adds some interesting bits and pieces to proceedings but I wouldn't say it's essential to play it to enjoy the game. Having said that, DX is the one that's available on the 3DS Virtual Console, so you may be constrained to having it! |

| I just realised I have this on my 3DS, think I'll have to start it now. |

| The aim is to pick this up on Thursday, fire up the old Gamefaqs in the background, and play. Last time I tried to play it I got hopelessly lost, so this time I'm taking no chances. |

| Joining in with this one. I own the game already, so I'm quite happy to emulate this guilt free.

| Can we please have an obligatory 90s advert in every one of these threads from now on? That was excellent! |

| Rik Mayall - y u no funny after 1989?
I'll give Link's Awakening a go, but I'll have to do this on the GameCube's GB player; my GBA cuts out if you cough in the direction of the battery/power compartment. I don't really want to buy it again on the 3DS because (controversy in 3 seconds) it's probably my least favourite Zelda. I was spoilt by the fact I played the amazing Oracle games first. |

| My goal is a complete run where I do not pass away at any point. I don't think I've ever managed that. Also, I really shouldn't start playing until Tuesday - far too much marking to do in between. |

| I'm afraid I've been distracted by Tales of the Abyss suddenly getting good. Apologies. I will play this soon! |

| It begins! I've had great success at not dying so far - I've just got into the first dungeon, though. Forgot how much I like the Guardian Acorn/Piece of Power music. In fact:

| I've begun too! ...insofar as I switched my 3DS on to check where I'd got to. I'm not starting this afresh, admittedly: I've got two instruments in the bag, and I think I might be doing something for a bunch o' frogs next. |

| Sat down with this today for the first time ever. I've always enjoyed 3D Zelda games as opposed to 2D Zeldas, but I still enjoy a good top-down Zelda. This seems to be the most self-aware Zelda game I've played. All the Nintendo references, the chap at the beginning saying "I'll be lost in the hills later, come find me", the Goombas popping up bizarrely in the first dungeon... it's weird, but good weird.
As for the gameplay, it plays well. I'm really enjoying the dungeon one item, jumping about in a Zelda game feels wrong, but it suits my playstyle well. So far, so enjoyable!

| Guess who actually played a bit of this today! Currently beating up people in Kanalet Castle, looking for golden leaves. 3 total. No idea how to get down to Ball and Chain chappie, though. |

| Ah, I'm almost at that point Balla, just been given a quest to find some Golden Leaves in that castle.
Is it just me, or are the Mario references in this really jarring? I don't know how to feel when I'm fighting a skeleton and some gelatinous monsters at one moment and then I'm cutting up Goombas and Piranha Plants the next. Apart from that, I've no complaints, this is a solid top-down Zelda so far! |

| I like the chain chomp companion! Also the random power ups you find in grass. |

| Just played a bit more and got to the second dungeon, or Bot Grot as I like to call it. Today I finally devised the right strategy to kill the first dungeon's boss without dying... having died once first. So there's that goal out of the window! It's weird how natural a fit playing this with the 3DS's Circle Pad is. I found my thumb naturally there - as is the device's design, o'course - and it felt... right. Still love the game. You can't leave the first house until you ask the guy on the right for your shield back. |

| I must admit, this has been rather sidelined in favour of Mirror of Fate. |
