1001 Video games You must Play Before You Die is a 2010 book published by Octopus Books containing a list of 1001 Video Games that the contributing authors believe should be played by everyone at least once.

How many have you played?

Notes:

There are only 999 items on this list but that is not an error. The book contains multiple games in single entries.

Due to a spelling error the game Free Running was removed from the list and re-added, however I am unable to move it back to its original place.

270. Although I did notice a few terrible games that you should never play, like Far Cry 2, Fuel, Resident Evil 5, No More Heroes, Spore and some others.

I found it amusing that they used a PEGI-rated box for WarioWare: Twisted!

Including remakes, games I've played a few seconds of (Line Rider, Machinarium), and the Jetpac and DK minigames in DK64, I've got 96. Better than I thought, although there were some dodgy ones up there. Dead Space Extraction? And I don't remember Cappa liking Max & the Magic Marker all that much either.

Now to see whether anyone else has played The Logical Journey of the Zoombinis. What a game.

I did a double-take when I saw Max & The Magic Marker on there. For me, the list sort of falls apart as we head into the mid 2000s. There's quite a bit of stuff that couldn't be viewed as essential playing from whatever way you look at it.

Max & The Magic Marker was even more boring that Ghost Recon Shadow Wars, which was unforgivably dull itself.

221. Not bad - although a lot of them were "played for 10 minutes" deals.

There was a lot of guff in there though.

320 there for me, I thought there was an adequate spread of duff games in the older section as well. Resi 5 and No More Heroes definitely deserve to be in the list though!

502 for me giving me 2/3 stars, there was some crap in there like resident evil 5 and i don't think i saw wind waker for instance.

Only 279, despite me being in my forties. Played hundreds of games on my Spectrum in the eighties, but not so many later on.

166. Given my heavy Nintendo bias, that's not too bad. It's missing some cracking games, though, and includes some cacking games... but then these lists always do.

237. Way better than I expected, to be honest. If it was a question of games I've finished, it would be very different, probably barely 10% of that.

Laughed when I saw Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes on the list.

Can you really call The Lost Levels a game you have to play? It's essentially just a ready hard set of levels for SMB.

I think he might have been better sticking to 500 and going for absolute classics/those that really tried something new. Just my opinion, o' course.

I'd agree with that. I get the impression the title came first and they had to fill it with whatever they could, especially towards the end.

281 was my score which is more then what I expected

259 although I'm assuming I've missed a few there as there were some notable omissions and I could increase that number quite easily as there's ones I own that I've yet to play.

I got my first "bingo" at 771, that's a row of 5 that I've played for those wondering.

My score I shall not be disclosing. I scored that little.  

So I've played the most then go me and my tempest 2000 playing abilities. Jimbob needs to take the test as I reckon he will be highest.

It's fair to say that most of those were in the first half, where the old games were on absolutely every system. Then while I only owned Nintendo consoles and a PC, it started to decline. In fact, there were even many Wii games that we'd previously been told by a certain magazine that we "didn't need to play them before we die".

Yeah you have, thought as you played what seemed so many consoles in the system vote you be much more then that.

292 for me.

I really was surprised I hadn't played quite a few games that are labeled classics & also equally surprised by a few games that are missing for example it had demon souls but not dark souls & MH freedom unite but no MH Tri.

I got 501. I can't believe that they didn't have Sabre Wulf on that list.....or Alien 3 (megadrive version). Anyway, 501 games played...probably lived just over half of my life expectancy....sounds about right
