This is why people don't rank 700 games, because they end up saying things like "Sonic 3 is a bit bad though".

For real though that's incredible work to actually manage to rank that many games, it even made my phone freeze just loading it.

It's not great but with Knuckles then it is.

Nonsense, it's probably the weaker of the initial 4 games but it's still great in its own right.

What! 3 + Knuckles is the complete experience, and almost as good as CD.

3 or Knuckles on their own are just fine.

That's a wild list, Jim. Really good mix of stuff in there. Do you use some sort of scoring system to rank them? Were these favourites, or what you'd say were the best?

I didn't have a MegaDrive as a kid, and I'm not a fan of belt scroller fighting games.

A new list for 2022


Much like before games in 39th still a 9/10 and still things I can think of that certainly come close to the 50, that does make me want to do a longer list like Jim but deciding if ICO is above Gone Home etc and ever how many more games will just take too long.

This is my latest list:

Sonic Pocket Adventure is basically Sonic 2 Mega Drive with improvements, where the Game Gear ones are the like Master System ones that they are different games.

Horizon Zero Dawn might be right game right place as I played it after something else, and it addressed the issue I had with that in a openworld setting, something I'm also not keen on.

I'm never not going to be happy to see Last Window in GJones' list. Is that the original Donkey Kong or DK94?

My top 25 hasn't changed since I last gave it here, apart from NEO TWEWY in at 19; but I recently expanded to a top 30 for something on the Back Page Discord (thanks to GJones for playing the Balla role of collating everything in a big spreadsheet). There's not much of interest in those bottom five I'd think, apart from that Ace Attorney Investigations 2 (the fanslation) makes the cut. A really special game and a massive improvement on the first, it's something of a minor travesty it never got released in the west.

Interesting...I know the Master System Sonic games are secretly good too. Or maybe I've been absorbing too much revisionist history from Youtubers. So you have two versions of Sonic 2 in your list? Did you play Sonic Mania?

DK94. Or Donkey Kong on the Gameboy - who started calling it Donkey Kong '94? I guess it's the original Doom 2016 or God of War 2018.

Burnout 3 is great, but I prefer Revenge. Specifically the Xbox 360 version as it had a great online mechanic (now defunct sadly) where you had rivalries, hence the "Revenge" name. It's also the only proper Burnout in HD. I'm also a fan of the traffic checking system they added that encouraged more aggressive driving. Burnout Paradise I never really got into, mostly because an open world Burnout makes no sense. Pittering around trying to find races sucked some of the energy out of the Burnout experience, which is full-on bumper to bumper action. The world was empty and lifeless too, and it was easy to miss turns (Midnight Club did the signposting better).

I didn't play Ninja Gaiden Black (or Sigma) so I'm just going off of what I played of Ninja Gaiden.

I should probably revisit Chaos Theory but I remember it being a slower game requiring more patience. I'm not sure if it holds up (translation: can I be arsed with it now?), whereas Conviction had this slick risk-reward system that made it feel like you were playing a Taken or Bourne Identity game. Also, I played it online with a mate in co-op, and it was brilliant fun.

Yeah the Master System/Game Gear are good platformers, just if I want a good platformer got Mario for that.

Where Sonic Pocket Adventure, Sonic 2 on Mega Drive and stuff like CD has the speed I want from Sonic. Did play Mania, it was fine.

Makes sense about Conviction, just what you're saying about a slower game with Chaos Theory is what I think Splinter Cell should be, a stealth game. Didn't know about Revenge differnces on 360 (I played on OG) but see it is BC for One & Series that might be HD on those (as doubt it was 720p on 360).

Class list that, Cappa. I like Mario Kart 64's inclusion, a game that seems to get slandered these days. I should have put Monkey Ball in mine really, it's an all-timer. Need to check out a few of those (Nights, Hogs of War, WarioWare Twisted) as there's a fair bit of crossover in our tastes.

Nice list Cappa, after the Sonic talk with Jim's list, nice to see 3+Knuckles getting the love as it is brill and one of those games I'd give an 8 or 9 and would be top tier if I did a list of all the thousands of games I've played like Jim's.
