New Console Smell

Easily the best thing about the release of new hardware is that new console smell. Rest assured, I'll be taking a morning out of my calender for a right good sniff of the Nintendo Switch out the box.

What do you think it'll smell like?

Right. Here. Playing a game isn't about playing the game, y'know?

Any idiot can just grab a disk and jam it in the hole. It's about teasing, it's about building up to it. You come home from work, you eat a nice meal, get showered and dressed in something comfortable. You make a hot cuppa, you dim it down to some appropriate mood lighting. When you're ready to begin, you peel off the cellophane.

Mmm, the smooth slide of the two halves coming away from the case. Oh my, the *click* of opening it for the first time. Hello, that smell. As NGamer described it, knowing this has only been touched by robots. It isn't nice and nostalgic in the natural sense- this isn't freshly mown grass or mama's apple pie. This is clinical, this is plastic, this is SCIENCE. But it's all about association. You don't like the smell, you like what the smell means. Nobody likes being teased, but it's all part of the game and it makes the pleasure oh so sweet.

Most game stores open the cases and keep the disks behind the counter. I only tend to get the cellophane and the smell if it's a game I've preordered, which means for the most part it's a big Nintendo release. When I crack open a case and take a deep breath, I'm picking up every Zelda, every Mario, every Pokémon or Metroid or new console minigame showcase.

When I finally pop the disk in the slot and grab the controller, the pleasure is all the better for the routine that came before it.


That's what I want to be sniffing in a week's time.

I don't know about you but after I'm done smelling the Switch & the games I'm going to give BotW's cartridge contacts a good licking.

My Switch box smells like mold, the console smells of nothing but the box smells of mold.

Warm plastic. The best console smell. Although that it's warm is perhaps a little perturbing, I've only played 40 minutes of docked BotW.

I licked my copy of 1, 2 Switch. I wasn't going to sully Zelda like that.

It was bad. I think I can guess the answer, but have any of you ever jokingly eaten a till receipt, or any quantity of wax? Just an unpleasant, chemical, poisonous taste. Should prevent swallowing I suppose.

The more I read about this, the more the whole seems like a mega prank set up by Nintendo. "Don't lick the game cartridges! *LOL* ". If they start telling people not to stick their dick in the game cases, you'll know something's up.
