| Rather than type up some reviews (which I did do before my 5 year old closed the browser!) I thought I'd provide shorter snippets from the mag. There was a nice feature on how Nintendo is dumping their GameBoy brand, news on the "Wii channel for original downloadable stuff" and in the spirit of GNamer, a list of the Top Dogs in gaming (starting with Poochy!). *REVIEWS* - Bingo! (85%+):
SSX Blur - 88
"Huge, meaty, substantial. It's a Wii title without a minigame in sight, yet it's as well suited to a quick thrash down the slopes as it is an all-night sesh. A winter sports game for all seasons."I see a few of you enjoyed this at the time - the way this 88% review reads, it's as if it's the best SSX yet, but nobody ever talks about it. Will be playing this soon.
- Good (70-84%):
Sonic and the Secret Rings - 82"Polished and entertaining, but not without moments that make you scream and curse your clumsy playing. This is a great Wii start for a franchise we'd given up on years ago."Was this as fondly remembered as the 82% NGamer gave it? I know Colors was well regarded but wasn't aware this was a good game. Kororinpa - 81
"In glorious tilty 3D and so much better than Monkey Ball; but unfortunately all too brief and too easy in places. Still, it's totally addictive and an essential for every Wii."Talked about this previously but the UK review appears this month and it's considered essential by NGamer. Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 - 81
"Intensely tricky companion to the anime series that's the closest fans will get to being a Super Saiyan fighting hero with mental hair."I've no interest in anime so will overlook this as far as playing it now - anybody played this?
- Not so bad (50-69%):
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 - 60
"What happened, Tiger? You were the golfing star on GameCube. Take your controls back to the drawing board, but don't give up - your brand of golfing is certainly welcome on Wii."
Odd how this ended up worse than Wii Sports golf. Wing Island - 57
"It's about as inoffensive as gaming gets, which makes it ultimately pointless and forgettable. Should be renamed 'Why the world needs Pilotwings'. Get to it, Ninty."
- Mostly useless (30-49%):
World Series Poker - 35
"Without online play, this falls way behind other poker games. Thrill-seekers will be gravely disappointed. What was Jesus thinking?"
For those interested in what the DS was offering us a decade ago: - Good (70-84%):
Hotel Dusk: Room 215 (US IMPORT) - 84"Engrossing tale told by master storytellers, with all the Noir-ish thrills of The Big Sleep. Unless you're a hardcore action junkie, import now." Lunar Knights - 82"Kojima has put a lot of thought into the series' development. While it loses a gimmick, it gains lots of fresh ideas, making it a pleasingly involved RPG - this time both day and night." Diddy Kong Racing DS - 82"Rare are so good with Nintendo hardware and it's proved so good for them too. Yes, it's a less charming Mario Kart, but this game is packed with ideas and fantastic racing." Picross DS (JAPAN IMPORT) - 83"You turn on the DS at 5pm. Next thing you know, it's 11.30pm and the stylus has worn a bloody groove into your finger. Forget the Matrix: it's Picross's grids that'll enslave us all." Harvest Moon: On An Island With You (JAPAN IMPORT) - 81"Build up an island economy from scratch using turnips, chickens and, dare we say, love? Pray for a UK version, as this is a treat even for those uncertain about a future in agriculture." Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis - 80"A great balance of quick, easy levels to play on the bus, with deeper high score challenges for when you're got more time. Ideal handheld fodder."
- Not so bad (50-69%):
Bubble Bobble - 50"A mediocre entry in the Bub and Bob saga, too irritating to ever be absorbing, and missing the sparkle of the mighty original. Some nice new ideas meet the frustration of poor level design."
The GBA wasn't dead yet: - Bingo! (85%+):
Final Fantasy VI Advance (US IMPORT) - 87"One of the last GBA games is also one of the best - it's the only GBA game you'll need in 2007. Now it's time for the DS remake of FFVII, right, Square? No winking emoticon."
- Good (70-84%):
Final Fantasy V - 74"For the completist, a must-have. For the rest of us, an entertaining history lesson that's just about weathered the passage of years."
March/April 2007 was a very good month for all Nintendo systems and many of these are cheap. I'll probably pick up Sonic and Kororinpa at the end of the month (already have SSX). Any interest in this lot? |

| SSX Blur and Sonic & The Secret Rings are the two games I chose to buy with my Wii back in April 2007, based somewhat on the past form of the series, but mainly because of these reviews. Greener got well excited about Blur IIRC - he did make it sound like the best SSX game ever. Really though, it was probably the worst to date at the time.
They've both got the same first-gen Wii problems, with the unreliable controls. If SSX Blur's controls are awkward though, then Sonic's are diabolical. I think that there's probably a decent game in The Secret Rings somewhere, but I never found it. Those controls go well beyond just being incredibly frustrating (if that makes sense).
Kororinpa is the cock and bollocks though. Breath of the Wild/Super Mario Galaxy/Micro Machines V3 good.

| Been hearing Kororinpa chat for a decade now and not picked it up. I'll start keeping my eye open, I reckon. Personally, I really enjoyed Sonic and the Secret Rings. I was 16/17 and able to spend obscene amounts of time getting my head round games with shit controls, though, so maybe it was rubbish and I just didn't notice. I'll get this issue out from under the bed tomorrow and have a flick through. - gjones wrote:

I wonder when we'll see them do that for the DS brand? My guess is Christmas. |

| Awww, I quite liked FFV (though I did play the mobile version). And there are some pretty fine DS games in there, to be sure! Picross is one of the console's finest games. |

| Yeah, you gotta give Kororinpa a go, it fixes some of the problems the Wii Monkey Ball created. Looking forward to digging this issue out! |

Okay, so it took me . . . a month, but I've got it out now! That Kororinpa review is a curious little case study; in how you shouldn't take a score without reading the text, in how value isn't entirely determined by length, and so on. Chrissy clearly loved the game to bits, and though she acknowledged the flaws and reflected them in her score, her writing tells the real story. Also, Greener bloody loved SSX didn't he? Blimey . . . KEY GAGS I HAVE ENJOYED SO FAR: - Hearing NGamer, 10 years ago, already calling out "visceral" as a lazy way of describing a game.
- On Godzilla Unleashed: Who managed to leash him in the first place?
- Ubisoft are releasing info slower than a non-teenage non-mutant non-ninja turtle -- that's a plain turtle. And that's slow.
- All of Matthew's masterful Hotel Dusk review. The stuff of NGamer legend.
- Um...% for the stock market game
- The macabre line about crossing out dead Beatles, which I remember every time I see the Let it Be cover.
