| SEPTEMBER 2007Sneaking in on the final day of September, there's a feeling of the calm before the storm ten years ago as the big releases approach in October and November. I mean, why else would Boogie be a cover feature, although saying that, Far Cry was a cover a year earlier and that was supposedly dreadful. This wouldn't have happened in the N64/NGC days - it's like putting Universal Studios on the front! "Forget Wii Sports"?!? There's certainly a lot of film tie-ins given the summer holidays have just finished, and a few PS2 ports in there too. It's interesting how film tie-ins simply aren't a thing nowadays. *REVIEWS* - Good (70-84%):
Scarface: The World Is Yours - 82
"Ultra-violent shooting, satisfying driving and a slightly strange business management sim, mixed with some admirably creative swearing. Not so clever but very big and enjoyable." Harvest Moon Wii (JAPAN IMPORT) - 72
"Fans won't care much about its many technical problems. It's still a great experience but please, guys - how about some quality control?" Hajime No Ippo Revolution (JAPAN IMPORT) - 70
"The disappointing controls drop it down a peg or two, but the fighting is solid and invites you to master it. Plug in a pad to make the game shine. " Driver: Parallel Lines - 70
"The closest thing to GTA on Wii, featuring great vehicles, okayish missions and a colossal city to drive around in. Parallel Lines might be late to Wii but it's still welcome."
- Not so bad (50-69%):
Surf's Up (US IMPORT) - 69
"You wouldn't want to buy it, but you might spend an enjoyable few hours on it as a rental, or at a friend's house: button-hammering, cartoony, racing niceties. Predictable but okay." Sims 2 Pets - 66
"This is what you score a GC game that was sort of okay nine months ago, and is now sort of okay and exactly the same, only on a Wii disc for £40."Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree - 63
"So we finally get the whole package now we're playing it in English, but it still doesn't warrant the £40 price tag. BBA gets a CCC."Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - 60
"Lots of places to go but not much to do when you get there. Almost everything about Phoenix is good, save for the simple omission of fun things to do with your exciting powers."
- Mostly useless (30-49%):
Go! Go! Minon (JAPAN IMPORT) - 42
"We had high hopes for this being Wii's Katamari Damacy - silly, vibrant, inspired. Instead, it's so dull that a DNA analysis would show 95% match with a lettuce. Next!"Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer - 30
"Tiresome nonsense, which isn't surprising considering the film it's based on. Joyless, and ludicrous, it's more irritating than finding Graham Norton loosening the lids on your jars."
There's another great piece this issue called "CHEAT", and it talks about AI and rubber-banding in titles like F-Zero GX and Mario Kart. The only game of interest to me is Scarface but it looks like a GTA-clone capitalising on the renewed interest in the Pacino film that happened in the early 2000s. Vice City effectively was GTA: Scarface. |

| Poor Graham Norton - he's a national treasure now. Have to admit to not having played any of those games, though I was interested in Big Brain Academy. Wanted to show off my big brain. |

| Oh boy. What a month.
But srs Joneses, I'm going to grab that issue and read the heck out of it until SURPRISE PREDICTION what I assume is going to be the ultimate or penultimate GamesMaster arrives. |

| What an awful month of games.
I think the movie games now are all on mobile along with the odd download title. |

| I really enjoyed the Scarface game even though activating the sweary bullet time wouldn't always work & I'd be left furiously waggling the wii remote & nunchuck. A very good port job which wasn't always the case on wii. |

| In all fairness, the DS games fared slightly better... I haven't got to the CHEAT article yet, but I remember it being a slightly-philosophical belter - the kind they were really good at at this time. - A few highlights so far::
- Someone working on Pilotwings and Kid Icarus - is it Retro? Actually we learned later it was Factor 5, and it didn't get too far; and then neither did they...
- The news that ex-Clover people are starting up a new company. What ever happened to that? Oh, right, yeah, bloomin' Platinum innit.
- We learn that, at some point, Greener interviewed Dennis Hopper, who wouldn't talk about the Mario movie.
- Sakurai-style captions for Smash Bros
- Wii Fantastic Four - I think the devs got Jessica Alba and Scarlett Johansson mixed up
- Looking at the Order of the Phoenix review, I really want a proper, non-film-tie-in, Potter game
- GamesRadar's ad starts with the "top 7 sexiest cheats" - the Golden Generation was about to start there, and they would've hated that ad
- They gave Phantom Hourglass 95% - I don't know if I would've agreed with that at the time
- Yay! There's a review with a ??% rating (Kanji-trainer Mizuro Blood

| I will - In response to Jimbob's comment:
fight for PHourglass but I will not fight for that score. Even at the time, that was an overrate. Thinking about it, the concept sounds very out there these days: an entirely touch-controlled Zelda game?! What is this madness?! I'm glad they pushed the boundaries... but neither PHourglass nor STracks was 95% good.

| There's not much that I've played here either, although I'll echo Jaster's thoughts about that Scarface game - it's pretty good. Big Brain Academy is worth the 0.000001p that you can get it for these days, it's a good laugh.
Does anyone know where I can read this issue online? |

| I had that Harry Potter game. I remember having a bit of a laugh with the motion controls, but I think they're bang-on with their review in that it was pretty shallow in regards to actually going about Hogwarts. The initial novelty of "oh wow, it's Hogwarts" faded pretty quickly.
I'd also totally forgotten about Boogie. Ah, early Wii games. |

I think this is when my "oh nooooooooo..." senses kicked in regarding the Wii. I'm through this now - once again, testament to how good this mag was, it's entertaining despite the "quality" games on offer at this stage of the Wii. That article on cheating is awesome. As is the Pokémon article. Those bloody banned episodes. Misty in a swimsuit contest - I can't imagine how this would get worse for them to market abroaOH WAIT YES IT CAN GET WORSE. And I wonder who it was who stole the cereal from Los Angeles, only to find it available in Waitrose when they got back? Cappa, I'm sorry, I don't know where this is online; if you want me to scan anything and/or read you it over the phone, let me know. |
