| Happy New Year to you too, sir, and indeed everybody here! I spent New Year's Ever solo from 8:10, so I asked a team of people to make me a pizza. They obliged. I made a few posts in the forum of varying quality and import. I actually spent the changing of the year getting Cole Phelps promoted to Ad Vice (yes, apparently; it's short for 'Administrative DIGRESSION ALERT: My phone now always suggests 'Admintendo' first when I start typing 'Adm'. Only if it starts with a capital 'A', though. ') in L.A. Noire. Now I'm unwell. I think I've picked up the flu-ish sore throat that my sister-in-law had over the festive period. Dr. Ball prescribes more sleep! |

My friend Renata is even better than Ren from Ren and Stimpy. She apparently slept in until 6PM today, which is pretty powerful[/quote] |

| How was your 2018? All in all, I had a good time. The birth of my first niece was the biggest thing that happened in my family, and she's the centre of everybody's attention now. I'm still in awe of her, and I'm still really chuffed for her Mum, Dad, Grandparents, other Uncle and everybody else involved. I'm really enjoying being an uncle too - good stuff! Socially, things are a bit different now. One of my closest pals suddenly passed away at the end of 2017, and my remaining friends and I committed to making new memories and sharing loads of new good times. That didn't happen, and instead things went the other way, for a whole of load of shite reasons that eventually lead to the police getting involved. Still, more positively, I'm meeting new people and making new friends through work, volunteering and other social circles. Through this, I've had plenty of quality nights out and weekends away. Some of the highlights were the days spent at Campbeltown's distilleries in April, The Gaslight Anthem gig day in July, several days out that the Fringe, a family jaunt to Arran for my Mum's 60th in November, the whole of December and the ongoing celebration of my 30th, and - of course - the GNamer Meet-Up in July. I thought that weekend in Manchester was great fun, and I hope those who were there did too. Maybe we can do another meet-up in 2019...? Professionally, it was a year of consolidation. I moved to a new part of Scotland at the arse-end of 2017, and I've been cracking on with my job as a Careers Adviser in a secondary school. For the first nine months, I felt like I was moving forward in reverse, but I think my efforts are more appreciated nowadays. I'm getting the chance to train up new members of staff too, which makes me feel a lot more trusted that I ever was in Aberdeen. I'm very fortunate to have a job that I enjoy, that I'm (hopefully) decent at, and that I feel valued in. With that move, I got a new flat in January. That flat has been a pain in the arse to be honest, and it's unbearably cold at most times. I'll have to make bigger decisions about where I want to live in 2019, because I'm still a little bit unsure about this town and about staying on this side of the country. Thankfully, summer 2018 was roasting hot all the time - just absolutely magic. All the best for your hopes and dreams in 2019 - I hope you achieve them. EDIT: Gaming-wise, I seen that Metro GameCentral called 2018 “turbulent” in their recent reflection of the last twelve months, but I’d prefer to adopt the Eurogamer stance on it: I thought 2018 was “ a fascinating, diverse year for games”. Collectively, we profited from some outstanding games, and I enjoyed a lot of these throughout the year. It wasn’t half bad! Expanded thoughts in the spoiler (without any spoilers): - Spoiler:
Funnily, I started my year in gaming with, erm, Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back on PS4. I described it in the Reviews Thread as being “just a very plain and unexceptional 2D platformer”. What a start! Happily, it got better. Some of my highlights:
Because I was moving to a new town, into a new flat and into a new job, I didn't play much for the first two months. It wasn’t until The Beast From The East stormed in and basically shut down Scotland for a while that I was able to get some serious gaming done. Because of the snow, I was housebound for three days: I put this to good use by completing Bayonetta on Switch. “Cool as fuck, 9/10” is what I said at the time. Damn straight.
All year long, I don’t remember being as excited for a game as I was for the Labo Variety Kit. Upon finishing up with it, I complimented it’s “inventiveness and how well it demonstrates what the Switch can do”, and concluded that it was “massively satisfying to play, build and experience”. It’s steep at sixty quid, but I’d argue that it’s as essential to play as any of Nintendo’s old-school classics. Make sure you give it a go!
Perhaps my favourite game that I played fresh was 2017’s A Hat In Time, which I downloaded on PS4. I absolutely adored this; as “a very earnest and big-hearted nod to the greats of the genre”, it was everything I’d wanted Yooka-Laylee to be. I really hope it makes it to Switch intact.
ONRUSH and Burnout Paradise Remastered waved the flag for arcade racing on console, and mostly did a good job. I got plenty of entertainment from both of them.
Sonic Mania Plus was a brilliant expansion to what I consider to be a genuine classic.
I ploughed through Yoku’s Island Express on Switch and WarioWare Gold on 3DS in rapid succession during the summer. I’d say these are two of the best games on their respective consoles, and brilliant quickie games to batter through before you sink your time into something meatier.
Fire Pro Wrestling World on PS4 was excellent - the first quality pro wrestling game in years.
Pokemon Let's Go and Super Smash Bros Ultimate stand head and shoulders above anything else Nintendo released on Switch in 2018. Between Kirby Star Allies, Mario Tennis Aces, Super Mario Party and several others, it was a real 7/10 sort of year (barring Pokemon and Smash, natch).

| Agreed: glad to see you having an improved 2018 Cappa! Especially job-wise. Sounds like 2019 has a good chance to keep improving too! What do you do to volunteer? - The Cappuccino Kid wrote:

But of course, I think it'd be stupid to dinghy it after the last few have gone so well! Got to meet you and Mas for the first time at the last one too, which was all good. My year's been a bit static, as I mentioned in Admintendo. Same job (although it went well), same partner (although it went better), same flat (although I'm getting mighty cheesed off with the noise coming through the ceiling). Switch-wise it felt like a bit more of a holding year too, although that's expected and it'd be bloody hard to beat 2017 anyway. Paris and Manchester were my only two trips really, and Paris was mediocre. I didn't write anything worthwhile, music or fiction; and made only one of my New Year's Resolutions. So neither good nor bad. Here's to 2019 being a year of movement for me, and what y'all want out of it from y'all! |

| Guilty as charged, I just love and semi-unconsciously pick up some of the slang. I don't think I'd even remembered that was Scottish! I still have the Labo Variety Kit sitting, unbuilt (apart from the bug and stage one of the fishing rod), in my living room. One for a rainy day, that. Really looking forward to Hat In Time too. |
