Mario Tennis Aces (Explaining Why Mario has Never Got Together with Peach)

If you're not excited about Waluigi in a sweatband, I'm not quite sure what's wrong with you. If not, though, there's always the NEW STORY MODE! Which, after the last couple of efforts, has sent me from to at a stroke.

I always like the Mario Sport games and this one from the brief look does seem like it be a grand slam.

Nintendo have learned to point out the important lineage of their games; they clued us into Odyssey being a descendant of 64 and Sunshine. I think the fact they mentioned classic Mario Sports story modes is a very good sign that this game will deliver.

Here's hoping; I saw some rumblings on Twitter that people thought the Story Mode wasn't what we might be thinking it will be. Nonetheless, it feels pretty clear that Ultra Smash development wasn't taken too seriously - maybe folks were moved on to making this instead?

I'm in. As long as you can switch off the magic circles, and play a boring game of regular tennis, I'm totally in.

I've seen some people bring not just that up but Wii U in general on how everything from the Wii U is moving over to Switch which is great for Jay but for most of us we supported Nintendo through the Wii U and you get maybe something like Ultra Smash with no effort and everything else good ported. Just feels like the Wii U was a massive waste of time.

I agree - maybe not as strongly, but it sure was a disappointment of a console. History should rightly judge it as a necessary step on the way to the Switch - understanding how to do art in HD, gradually moving away from the TV and into your hands - but not much more. In my humble, unsubtle and often wrong opinion, natch.

I think you're and with all these ports, Nintendo much like with the Virtual Boy can sweep it under the carpet like it never happened.

I'd say that that's a fair assumption. Gameplay-wise, Ultra Smash was actually a really solid "boring game of tennis", but it's like the developer shipped the game when it was about 40% complete. It's as if they had nobody to work on it.

A Story Mode is the difference between making Aces missable and unmissable for me. It was good to see it at the Direct, and I'm looking forward to it!

Zero's right that the Wii U was a necessary step to get to the Switch. It was a massive flop, but I can't have the hatred, or even the apathy, for it that some of y'all do. Plus, I liked the Gamepad.

MTUS, on the other hand, deserves a whole lorryload of apathy.

I loved the wii U but with the Switch being as great as it is I don't see much point in looking back.

I'm not expecting the story for this to blow me out the water but I do like what they have already shown, seems nice and simple of having an overworld map, go through levels and then have occasional boss fight.

That's all I'm after, really. I don't want a complex RPG that makes me play as some anime nobody, I wanna be Mario or Peach and just have some singleplayer content to put a few hours into.

I'll happily take either. From what they've shown off, it looks like this might be a Mario Tennis version of the SubSpace Emissary without the duff new enemies. If so, bring it all the way on.

Have they announced any online multiplayer for this?

I'm quite looking forward to this. My last Mario Tennis was back on Gamecube and I remember properly getting into that one. Am I wrong in saying that Mario Power Tennis had a story mode as well?

I don't think so? It had tournaments - I believe the Wii U game didn't even have tournaments! And a bunch of minigames. But I don't think it had anything that could be described as a story mode.

I could have sworn I remember a series of cutscenes with Wario and Waluigi getting up to no good.

I'll have look tomorrow and record as I want to do more retro but never know what to do and not.

That was the intro cinematic! It was great, but completely non-playable.

I got a lot of time out of my last Mario Tennis game on the 3DS and that was barebones so I'm assuming this should be great for me at least, would love to get some forum games of this going.

I'm still living in hope that if this sells well we can see a new Mario Football.

Was just discussing how I'd like to see that the other day! Shamefully I've never picked up a Strikers game before. Switch would seem like a good opportunity - so long as they don't put the lot that did the sports mix on 3DS on it.
