Among Us

In case you didn't know, Among Us is a 4-10 player game of teamwork and deception available on Android, iOS and PC. It's cheap as chips on PC, £3.99, and I think it's be free with ads on mobile. The game is cross-platform, so we'll all be able to play together no matter the device. It should run on any computer, but you can check if it works on yours using The System Requirements Lab website.

Among Us been taking the Twitch by storm during these rough times of ours. A crew of spacefarers must work together to deduce who the imposter is before it's too late, whilst the imposter sabotages the ship and backstabs the crew. The imposter can sneak through vents to get around and potentially ambush lonely crewmembers. Because of the number of tasks aboard the ship that need to be performed, the crew has to split up, leaving individuals vulnerable to the imposter.

Sounds like a souped-up wink murder game that could be a lot of fun over Discord. I hear a lot of people use the "mute rule", which simply means that nobody can talk unless there's a crew meeting going on. I think there's a room that crewmembers can use to call meetings. I don't really know an awful lot about the game because I'd quite like to go in relatively blind myself.

Anyone interested?

I was actually watching a video of this earlier today and trying to work out how the mic system was working (Funhaus have done a few gameplays of it and they might have explained it in one of them but I don't remember). I think they do the 'mute rule' though, because they don't speak to each other while they're playing, and when someone's killed they don't come back into conversations until the game ends (because obviously then they could reveal who killed them).

I would in theory be up for this but I am a grandmother who has never used Discord and also I have a reasonably old MacBook Air - I am not what you might call a member of the PC elite.

Apparently Rum and I have the same taste in computers, as well as in (some) games!

I want to be the sort of person who played this, but I don't think social deduction games are for me.  I played a few games of Internet mafia in my Internet adolescence, and while I wasn't a bad townie that was mostly because I was trying too flaming hard and getting stressed about it.  I didn't have fun.  Games should be fun.  

I definitely think you lot should play though, and that Muss should stream it on Discord so people like m'self can watch.

I can definitely see this being fun with the right group of folk but I have to say I don't find it that fun to watch on youtube or twitch.

My brother's been playing this with his Uni friends and I reckon it could be a laugh. I can't imagine it's a fun one to watch random people play, but I guess it could be a fun stream if it were folks you already know and like.

I would have thought it would run on a Mac Air, Edit, scratch that. It only runs natively on windows or iOS/Android. There are means of getting it to run on Mac although it sounds like effort! You could also play it on a tablet or phone without being disadvantaged in game though - assuming your phone can run it.

As far as Discord goes, you can either download the desktop/mobile app or go onto the Discord website and run it through a browser. We can add you to a group chat once you've made an account Rum. It's pretty similar to Skype but I think the call quality tends to be quite a bit better.

As for you Balla, join us mate! I doubt it's a game we'll take too seriously. You're welcome to some Jackboxes too, no doubt we'll probably bounce between them.

I think I would have to stream it over Twitch if I was to broadcast anything, otherwise I'd be sharing my screen with everyone on Discord That's assuming everyone is happy for me to do so of course. I would be tempted to make an edited YouTube video of my playthrough although that's effort!

Perhaps we could set something up for a morning on a weekend sometime so that the time difference works for Buska.

You know I'd be down for this. I've loved what I've seen on YT from this and I'd love to play it with a good bunch of folks like yourselves. I've not downloaded it yet myself as the idea of playing it with randoms sounds gash.

I might also consider it if it helps.

I think Drunka might be busy this weekend, so perhaps a Sunday evening session? This weekend if people are keen but otherwise next week we could try for something in the morning of next weekend so Drunka can get involved.

I've very nearly considered buying it this time (although my credit card was a-frauded last week, so I'm nervous about breaking in its replacement).
One question: those of you who've already played it: do you have it on PC or mobile? Is the mobile version usable with gestures?

I had a couple of games with my family last night. It's pretty fun, I can see this having legs, especially if everyone plays by the rules and doesn't have outside comms.

That settles it for me. If it's compelled Dusty Knackers to log onto here for the first time in three-or-so years then it must be half decent. 

We've got to get some proper online games on the go now, if Dusty's about!

If folk would prefer to play this over Jackbox this Saturday then I'm down with that.

For anyone on the fence about buying it, I tried out the free phone version yesterday and it plays well. Would be much nicer with a controller rather than an on-screen joystick, but it's still fine.

Would be nice to have the Dusty one aboard

Yeah, I think this being on Switch might be the catalyst for me giving it a go. Well up for this as part of Muss's Saturday Game Night.
