| Double post, but I finished the whopper of a final case of TGAA1! - TGAA1-5 Spoilers:
As much as there were some really good moments within the case itself - forcing Gregson to confess by playing the music box was a clever moment - I do think as a whole this was one of the weaker final cases in the series. Usually, the final cases deal with some sort of whopper revelation built up over the course of the game (why was Phoenix disbarred, the fate of Misty Fey and so on) but the bigger mysteries of the game were left unsolved by the conclusion of this case, so that sense of satisfaction wasn't there for me.
I'm fully expecting the likes of finding out what Asogi's mission was, how Susato knows about The Hound of the Baskervilles and what the hell is up with van Zieks to be covered in the second game, but it does mean it takes away from the first game somewhat.
I've also got to throw some shade on the stereoscope puzzles present in this case - I'd imagine these were designed to have used the 3D on the 3DS and would have landed much better as a result, but the translation to Switch meant they fell incredibly flat and just frustrated me whenever they turned up in the case.
On a happier note, I didn't find myself as bothered with Iris in this case as I thought I might have been. Fleshing out her character a bit did highlight that she's still a kid at heart despite her outwardly clever and genius-like persona, so I did appreciate that. I still think it would have landed better if they'd tweaked her design and made her a teenager instead as it's difficult to rationalise this ten year old being a genius. There's actually some concept art in the Extras section of the game that show off a slightly older Iris that they trialled in development and I wish they'd gone with that!
Still, I'm very excited to play the second game following the conclusion of the first and I'm glad I'm playing a collection with both games in it as I don't think I'd be as happy if I'd played this standalone! Also, van Zieks is shaping up to be the most interesting prosecutor since Edgeworth and I do hope he gets more time to shine in the sequel.
Onto the second game! |

| - Response to the above:
Yep they really don't feel like two separate games! I remember that case being a bit of a duffer as well - Graydon was alright, but the Skulkins felt a bit Layton vs AA. That isn't a compliment.
Glad you've started to warm to my boy.

| I finished case 3 and am onto case 4. I feel like I haven't had a proper case yet! It reminds me of when I revisited the first Phoenix Wright a couple of years ago and realised you only actually have two cases against Edgeworth! |

| Yeah, the pacing feels strange having played the rest of the series, but I did actually like it as it worked in context of the overarching story of the game and made it feel more distinct in a way from the main series.
Is it not three times? I know he's in 1-2 and 1-3, but is he not the prosecutor in 1-5 or am I making that up? Or did you not count that with it being a bonus case? |

| He is, although unlike the first and second games here the fifth case does feel like its own thing a bit. |

| Aye, it was a bonus case for the DS port, right? |

| Yep, I always forget he's the prosecutor in the 5th case because it doesn't really feel like it moves either his or Phoenix's character arcs. |

| I thought they made it feed in quite well to Edgey-Poo's character arc, but they were always going to be hamstrung trying to do a retrofit. |

| As mentioned elsewhere on the forum, I've jumped back into this and I'm now tackling Resolve, the second half of this collection. I'd actually not recommend to take a break between both games like I've done. The second game feels like it's a straight continuation of the first game and I had to refresh myself a little bit on the events of some of the cases in the first game. Whilst that's been a bit of a blunder on my part, I am enjoying having a more direct sequel in the Ace Attorney series. It's allowing for characters to develop and for me to grow more attached to them. We've not really had that sense of character development across games since the original trilogy. I'm in Case 3 and I'm also chuffed to see that besides the introductory case, we've had full investigations plus trials from the outset. - More in-depth spoiler thoughts:
The first case was fine enough - it seems like more of a setup for what's to come in the finale of the game, I expect. It was good fun playing as Susato though!
I liked the supporting case in the second case - Shamspeare was a fun foil and I loved his character animations. The actual crime itself felt a bit convoluted even for Ace Attorney standards and the gas thief subplot felt like it went on for a while.
I'm not far into Case 3 yet - I've met the defendant, who seems a bit annoying. It was good to see Gina again and the Gregson/Gina combination has potential. I love the design for Madame Tusspell - sultry French witch is a win in my book. Very interested to see where van Zieks is going. Also, I'm very wary of van Zieks's apprentice as I've already worked out who it is (at least the game isn't trying to hide it judging by Naruhodo's initial reaction) and I fear some bullshit may be afoot. We shall see!
So far, so good! |

| It is absolutely a continuation. The characters and cases feel, I'd say, undercooked in the original game on its own: game two brings them to life more. The lack of stereoscopic 3D aside for that one rubbish bit, it feels like we're playing the game(s) like it/they should always have been played, in one volume. Unless you're Jay. Case 1 of Resolve was actually one of my favourites, case 2 feels like it gets hung up on Takumi's fascination with Victorian London a tad, case 3's defendant is indeed a bit annoying, and the bullshit is at the very least bullshit that doesn't progress exactly as you'd expect. That's all I'll say. Chuffed that you've finally got around to it! |
