Subject: Live A Live with Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition Sat 12 Feb 2022 - 12:11
Square showed us a few games in the direct, including these two(three) older ones with Live A Live the OG Octopath Traveller as it has 8 different stories set in different 8 time periods, which is getting a western release for the first time with a 2D-HD Remake. The price on the eShop is £40, but then I'm comparing it to Octopath and this LAL is new but does seem a lot, but hey maybe a physical version comes out (Japan is getting one).
It was directed by Takashi Tokita who also directed Chrono Trigger (Where is this on my Switch, Square?) in which you travel time (like Live A Live) and would get sequels in the other game's in the direct Chrono Cross: Radical Dreamers. I say other games as this version coming is an remaster of Radical Dreamers from the Satellaview and Chrono Cross from the PS1 combined into one collection (Also why we've seen Chrono Cross in mobile game Another Eden, me thinks).
I've not played any of these three games, but I know of them all and their pedigree that I am certainly keen for them all.

I didn't realise Live A Live was as old as it was, so I hope it still plays well and isn't stuck in the SNES era from a gameplay standpoint. It certainly looks very interesting and I'm keen to give it a try.

While I do see the sense behind it, I don't think it's quite fair on Live A Live (which looks banging) to lump it in the same thread with Chrono Cross (which doesn't really), and certainly not only putting a Chrono Cross logo in the OP! I'm moderately interested in both, but at this point LAL is a SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY prospect and CC:RDE is one to wait and see on.

I didn't think either big enough to have own threads, and the logic was both older Square RPG's coming this year, which might just be me but if a fan of one likely the other.

Maybe so. The OP is better now anyway. I hope I'm a fan of both.

Apprantly Nintendo are publishing Live A Live and a physical version up for preorder at Gamestop, that's all good news.

I'd never heard of Live A Live before the direct but they really managed to sell me on it, seems a interesting concept with it basically being 7 or 8 different games in one, will definitely be keeping an eye for a physical version, seems like something that won't have a massive print run.

Yeah, just little surprised but LAL is new to all of us, that does make some sense.
Least out different times, play Chrono Cross, talk about it, then do same for Live A Live and maybe mix in some Front Mission 1st.

Judging by the reaction to that in the Discord voice chat during the Direct, nobody is picking that up here.

I saw that Megalovania was originally based on a boss battle theme from Live A Live which is a fun little titbit.
I loved Chrono Trigger when I played it on DS years ago, but don't think I could be any more non-plussed about Chrono Cross. I guess in part because it just never made waves in the same way.

It's not only that though! LAL has been re-painted in the lurvely Octopath HD2D style. Meanwhile the Chrono Cross 'remake' looks... well, like a game from 1999. Or a Kemco RPG.

Now that's harsh on Chrono Cross, which is also a remaster.

I've not played Chrono and my Live A Live has arrived which I don't know when I'll start, then this year a few more odder Square games coming that sort fit into this thread.

Because Mas wasn't happy with doing only Live-A-Live dirty.
Anyway, I've officially asked for LAL as a birthday present. Obviously there's the small matter of another JRPG that's going to take my time and focus until then. What with those, Survive, and two Pokémon games, it's shaping up to be a decent year for the RPG fan.

Yeah so since last Friday to year end it's LAL, Digimon Survive, Xeno 3, Soul Hackers 2, DioField, Harvestella, Valkyrie Elysium, Pokemon S&V, NieR Automata and others such as the likely Tactics Ogre remaster
Just so many and I've already played 13S, Pokemon Legends, Torna, Horizon Forbidden West (very western mind), Strangers of Paradise, Triangle and VoC

Square continues bringing older games out this year, with Tactics Ogre Reborn which is a remaster of a remake.
I'm keen for it and yet another Square Enix game I'll likely be picking up, all depending if physical release in Europe.

Guess depend how this one does.
Also from the Nvidia leak all so far be correct meaning still a FFIX remaster/remake and same for FF Tactics.

Double Post as I've started Live A Live, also seen Andy (might have finished due to 20hrs played) & Fronk have as well.
I've done three of the chapters Prehistoric, China and Japan then to begin the Wild West.
LAL is one of those games I'm not sure if good or not, as I'm playing almost right after XC3 a fantastic JRPG and played 2D-HD title Triangle Strategy this year that I'm automatically comparing to those.
Still I want to see where all these chapter's end up come the end.

I did in fact play all the way through. It was an interesting artifact. I can see how it would have been incredible back on the SNES, the diversity would've felt great, the combat was solid and the individual tales were decent, but the problem is I don't really think it worked. The stories felt too seperate and all too short to properly get invested in and I don't think the game ended in a way that justified them being in the same game.
I also felt the game was a bit too obtuse at times. I had a nasty time in Prehistory when I walked into a cave and was locked into a battle with a boss much higher levelled than me and the autosave locked me in so I couldn't escape to level up. Each chapter after that point tended to have a few things that meant if I didn't follow a guide I'd just be having a worse time.
Overall a cool artifact, but if you've not played Chrono Trigger go play that. That's a real classic.

I had that issue as well in prehistory, a lot of healing items used but the other two had no issues what so ever.
