Aye, that's true. That's why I didn't remove it.

Didn't think the JRPG lot on here would be fussed about sports, hence the idea was eventually made to do it with minigames. Makes sense, considering that many of the Wii's best minigame compilations are sports-based, like Wii Sports and Mario & Sonic. I just didn't consider the fact that people would vote for Mario Party and that - I had honestly forgotten all about them. My bad, I guess.
Anyway, done.

It's no surprise to see the winner of the sports/minigames category, just as it will be no surprise to see the winner of the fighting game category. My vote has gone in - two games! These wiikly votes have been like a pendulum for me - last week I really had to think but this week it's been all too easy. I suppose I like my genres...

My vote's will be sent tomorrow. NMH to me is a hack n slash which i gather comes under action, also some compared shenmue with NMH there like the same. Shenmue is a action RPG, also I've got idea for a category wiimakes/ports (mainly so i can vote for resident evil remake).

Unless anyone tells me otherwise, NMH is adventure while NMH2 is fighter. I've updated the OP to reflect this. And ports are allowed: obviously RE4 was permitted, and even New Play Control Mario Power Tennis was legal last week. So I suppose the other Resis would be adventures as well? I understand that RE4 is the most "shooty" of the bunch.

Resident Evil 4 isn't a shooter and yes i gave it number 1 shooter as it had to go into that genre. That now makes my adventure category harder if i can vote for RE:make.

Oh by the way thought I'd clarify things a wee bit I didn't think it was only unfair to the sports category being lumped in with minigame compilations, it was also unfair to the mini-games I would've liked to have voted for but couldn't due to how much I enjoy sport.

Had we but world enough and time... and a time machine. I'd probably have chucked minigames in with rhythm games in that case. Something would have lost out. (No I will not budge from ten weeks; 10 is the basis of our numerical system goddamnit! )
Six votes so far, including me! Including two lots of 5 games, and one lot of 1. That's still good, though! Better than week 1, when four people voted for MKWii only.

I really like the idea of a top 10 of all Wii games after we've picked our favourites from each genre.

That was me, and I stand by that statement. It still made my list, though (albeit due to a lack of games I've played in this genre); Wii Sports Resort simply did it better.
I've just caught up with the last results. Seems like most people had the same games in mind, though for some reason I completely forgot about Mario Strikers Charged. I quite enjoyed what I played of it, though I had more experience of its GameCube older sibling.

I'm disappointed! I was the guy who said it represented the greatest days of my gaming life. Me and my mates played Wii Sports so much that it was nigh-on abuse. Never mind the likes of Super Mario 64, Street Fighter II and DOOM; Wii Sports should rank alongside the likes of Pong, Space Invaders and Hogs of War in terms of videogaming importance.

The fact it got my whole family - most of them having just passed off video gaming as not worth their time - crowded round the TV eager for a go on the Wii speaks volumes to me.

I think it was a nice bridge game, it was the first game that got my family into family wii games, but it's not that great a game so we moved on to loads of different and better games. Hell I had my mum playing Fire Emblem and Trauma Centre the other day. I think that whilst an important step it doesn't deserve to be rated very highly as it just isn't that good.

In terms of what gaming was and could be, Wii Sports is definitely a landmark title for me. As a long-term single-player gaming experience, there is not much there, no. And the baseball is still poop.

I think "mediocre game, good experience" just about sums it up for me. Plus, although I can agree that the baseball is dung, there was still a huge amount of pleasure in having two teams of Miis facing off against each other. Apart from that one Pro Evo (where it was an unlockable and I didn't stick with it for long enough to unlock), I don't think there's another game which pits more than three Miis against each other. I'm still hoping that Nintendo release Wii U Team Sports so that Dictators FC can go up against Skyloft United for the title.

I appreciate what it did for gaming, I just didn't personally rate it myself. Having extremely limited access to other players is one of my biggest reasons; it just didn't have a leg to stand on for the primarily solo gamer (not that it was supposed to).

I'm really struggling this week. Though I love it, I (and others) regard Punch-Out!! as a puzzle game dressed up in a deceiving set of clothes. If it gives me something to vote for, though: it's in. I'll also be voting for Brawl*.

Double post, yes yes. Something for this lovely sunny afternoon: week six's theme will be platform games! It's a big one all right. Possibly the best genre on the Wii? Who can say? (Well, you can, here, if you want to.) This round of voting will close at 1800 21st April. You can still vote for fighting games and potentially break the second-place tie until 1800 tonight, of course.
There aren't many controversial games this/next week, unless anyone disagrees with Cave Story being saved for adventure. The only one I can think of is Monkey Ball Banana Blitz. We've assessed that it's not a minigame collection, but so far we've had one person calling platform and one calling puzzler (I think). Opinions and votes welcome, as always.
EDIT: And Bit.Trip Runner! Is that platformer or rhythm? Again, I haven't played it.

Bit Trip Runner is a platformer, the music just builds and has no impact on the gameplay. I really don't see how SMB:BB can be a platformer when the jump is barely used.

Still waiting for someone to show me a puzzle in a Super Monkey Ball game. Now waiting for some tosser to inevitably not be able to tell if something like FIFA 13 is a platformer or not.
Best genre on Wii, if you ask me. A top ten would be near-impossible for me, so I don't know how I'll get on with a top five. Give it a bash, natch.
EDIT: Bloody hell, andyman.

Okay, having watched some YouTube videos of the two titles in question, my thoughts are that Monkey Ball is definitely a platformer, and Bit Trip is rhythm. Watch this and tell me the music doesn't play a role in cuing you when to press the jump button.

Thanks for the research Jay! What I think more than anything is that I agree with Castle on BTR. Apart from that, it seems like a Harmoknight-esque combination of rhythm and platform, which I'd probably slot into rhythm by default, especially given that platformer is a difficult enough choice as is. Happy to call SMBBB a platformer, unless Andy can rally the troops!
Anyway, remember week 5? That one with all the fighty games? It's over! (Well near as damn it, and no one else is online for a last-minute vote.) 11 people voted: slightly lower than previous weeks, but then this is a bad week for the Wii. That's not to say that there weren't some good games voted for...
Fifth place:
Spoiler:
Deadly Creatures
Points: 5 First places: 1
You say: "This game was epic, It took an old nostalgic genre and injected new ideas it told a story from a bizarre external perspective. strong cinematic cut scenes with dual perspective, dialogue is well voiced by Dennis Hopper and Billy Bobby Toddy Robby Tod Thornton. The environments were great with a real sense of scale. a small world within a big world. It has some of the most effective level design on the wii. I think the penultimate chapter in the landfill was my favourite. It took me awhile to get through this game playing small bits hear and there. I think that helped it to sink in more as in hindsight it could have been finished in a day. exclusives like this are what made the Wii great"
I say: Wow, remember this? All I recall of it is a rather optimistic preview in NGamer, followed by a high sixties review score and everyone forgetting about it. And now it's here! Truth be told, I did wonder whether I should have included this in beat-em-ups (might have been adventure, like NMH?), but I doubted that anyone else would vote for it in adventure, and this way a forgotten potential great gets a chance to shine. (And if I exclude this, there are four games on three points.)
Fourth place:
Spoiler:
No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle
Points: 13 First places: 0
You say: "For me the fights were nowhere near as good as the original's but I found the minigames far better! Go figure." "In comparison to the original the bosses were forgettable and I felt a bit cheated on how many, but it was fun, the minigames were much better and thank goodness they dropped the awful empty sandbox and paying to fight."
I say: I only voted for two games, but I didn't feel that I could rank this above third place due to having spent about an hour on it. What I played was much as expected, only without the bike: colourful fights (which I enjoyed), 8-bit-esque minigames (which I didn't enjoy), and Sylvia sashaying around (which Travis enjoyed). Probably worthy of its placing, unless it cocks up majorly later on. (Insert Destroyman joke here.)
Joint second place:
Spoiler:
Punch-Out!!
Points: 17 First places: 1
You say: "Very challenging to both the mind and reactions, a bit of a looker and full of character." "Suits the Wii perfectly; good arcadey fun." "The perfect resurrection of a franchise. The game that made Next Level Games a developer to keep an eye on, Punch-Out!! bravely - and successfully - updated two games that arguably needed no such thing. That it kept the spirit of the two games before it alive whilst being a worthwhile game in its own right, is testament to the strength of the concept and the development team. Criminally underlooked and underexposed, this is one of Wii's hidden gems, perfect for quoting to anyone who says that Wii had no decent core games."
I say: Well now I feel guilty. Having never been the biggest fan of beat-em-ups (as my two votes suggest), I gave this one a miss, seeing a throwaway distraction rebooted for fans of the racism-heavy originals. More fool me: apparently it's more puzzler-like in execution, and even I can see that it looks beautiful. Something for me to pick up during a 3DS and Wii U games drought.
The second second place:
Spoiler:
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars
Points: 17 First places: 1
You say: "As one of the ten people to actually play this I can say it's a very solid fighter with a lot of fan service." "Only hampered by the fact that I knew none of the Tatsunoko characters (and not all of the Capcom ones, either!). I'd never seen a tag mechanic before, so that was cool, and the core game was great." "because KAPOW!"
I say: I feel less guilty about this one. Like our second commentator, I know very few of the characters involved, so what I saw was a "proper fighter" version of Smash Bros. for fans of heroes and heroines I'd never heard of. But again, it looks very pretty, and the core gameplay sounds nice for those who like this sort of thing.
Our Wiikly Winner:
Spoiler:
Super Smash Brothers Brawl
Points: 51 First places: 8
You say:
"Obvious choice but much like Melee it was a huge game with so much to see and do. The additions were exactly what the series needed and almost definitely worth more than 94% "
"Nintendo's finest piece of fan service, even if it's a game I'm not crazy about and one I think is hugely overrated. It's the perfect handheld game that isn't a handheld game: short bouts, brief tournaments, and always some reward for attempting a new challenge. Collecting those trophies is damned addictive, and Subspace Emissary could've been the best addition ever if the platforming wasn't so utterly, utterly gash. A mixed bag, but one I don't regret sinking some time into."
"Without a shadow of a doubt. It had some major faults - like the shoddy online mode, unimaginative bonus stages and fairly mince single player campaign-thing – but at the time I overlooked those because the core gameplay was so damn good. I still can, but I hope the sequel sorts these flaws out."
"More to do than can ever be done, as the song says. Hugely and simply fun."
"An interesting campaign and the great fighting we've come to know and love. No fighters match it."
"just drenched in nostalgia!"
"Melee was rooted in my Gamecube for months at a time, and when this was announced, I lost it. I checked the Dojo website every day for nuggets of information... this was my first video game obsession. When it finally came out, I loved it. I loved the new characters, I loved the story mode regardless of its criticisms... it introduced me to new games, new videogame music, and it played better. Final Smashes changed the game, pardon the cliché. Online mode was brilliant, not that I touched it much as I was too busy enjoying splitscreen carnage with friends. It may not be a fighting game in the same vein as Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat, but it's probably one of my most played games of all time."
"Now guys... Im assuming while you are reading this, Balladeer has slapped the #1 fighting game right on this title, right where is deserves to be. We are voting on games for a Nintendo console. Super smash bros encapsulates all that is Nintendo adds great balanced fighting game-play and characters from every corner of the Nintendo universe.
If this title does not make number 1 it is a severe injustice. Brought on by those of you that went online and got destroyed by a Jigglypuff player then in-between rage and tears you boot up No More Heroes, a nice safe, single-player game for all you cowards who couldn't hack it. Are you not entertained!?"
"because derp"
I say: Because derp indeed.
Back in "The Old Place", when we were asked to give the best games of the noughties, I ranked Mêlée above this, and I think I still would. The graphics are somehow more drab, the tripping an idiot design decision, the Target Test simplified, and why in free-for-alls did the CPUs all gun for you? Then there were the new additions that didn't quite hang together, like the epic sweeping one-player mode with the rubbish level design, the online mode that got so laggy as to be unplayable, and the "Blue Shell in a fighting game" Final Smash, especially for Sonic. Oh, also, this one has Sonic in.
But then there's everything else. Smash Bros. has never gone for revolution, instead choosing just to expand. Brawl gave us Meta Knight, Wario, Pit, Olimar, and made all the clones less clone-like. It gave us the Halberd, Spear Pillar, Pictochat. It provided 20 co-operative event matches, in addition to the existing ones. It dumped more amazing music on us than we could possibly cram into last week's Music Week. And those additions, dubious though some of them were, were nice to have. Remember the rather scary Floows? The boss battle against Meta Ridley? Putting "Goat in!" as one of your online phrases? Green Missile-ing into the back of a Final Smash-enabled Meta Knight online, killing him? (That last one may have just been me.)
I wrote two books' worth of fanfiction on this. I think it goes without saying that I voted it first place, and had it placed any lower, it would have been a crime against Nintendo. And yah boo sucks to Stu.
Honourable Mentions:
Spoiler:
Guilty Gear XX Λ Core Plus, The King of Fighters Collection: The Orochi Saga, Madworld, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (again, its inclusion in fighters is dubious, but 'Pedia calls it "an action role-playing game" and nobody voted for it in week 2, so meh), Mortal Kombat Armageddon, Pokémon Rumble, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, WWE SmackDown Vs. Raw 2009
Dishonourable Mentions:
Spoiler:
Castlevania Judgement: "FUCK THIS GAME. The combat is so uninspired - it's literally just spamming your normal attacks until one of you gets a super attack. Say what you will about Super Smash Bros. being a dumbed down fighter, there's still plenty of room for strategising and dodging and generally playing the game as opposed to mashing A. And the character design... oh my god. Simon Belmont looks like the fruitiest excuse for a Vampire Hunter. It's just a terrible excuse for a game. I love Castlevania, hate this."
Sonic: "for being in this game [SSBB]. Sickening."
Super Smash Bros. Brawl: "First of Melee was superior..I dont even think Brawl would have made this list if it was not for its "Subspace Emissary" mode. [...] I really hope this mode is expanded in the next iteration of the series as the level design (considering the multitude of worlds available) was bloody awful generic smash bros arena looking stuff"
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: "for just being rubbish. The fighting is terrible and made MvC3 a bad game."
Wrestling: "because it's rubbish."
WWE All Stars: "Great game on other consoles, but sorely let down on Wii by the weediest and most distracting sound effects I’ve ever heard in a game. Seriously, that’s what keeps it from my top five."
That's the second-worst week over, in my opinion. Hooray! Now back to arguing about jump buttons.
