| Hooray for SMB3, as far as I'm concerned! I'm happy to see it chart because I doubted that it could (for some reason; maybe because I get the impression that there's more love for World than 3 in these parts).
For the record:
1) I voted for five platformers, three 2D and two 3D. 2) Phillips is right - there's a good game inside Paper Mario: Sticker Star somewhere. The main mechanic is a great idea. 3) 3D Land is in my top 3 3DS games. It may well have been repetitive and used a lot of previous ideas without expanding things a great deal but it was fun. And being fun means I forgive a lot. 4) I want to see a handheld game in the list before too long. |

| I'd say that almost all the Mario games are fun. That's why I enjoy playing 'em! For me, SM3DL was a lot less fun than any of the other 3D Marios. Where was the Blooper-surfing, ice skating or Wing Capping, eh?
And there may have been fragments of a good game in PMSS, but they were overshadowed by... well, a lot of stuff. If I say too much now, there won't be any point in a dishonourables section. |

In truth, you were the only person who posted any dishonourable mentions. If you feel it'll add to the debate or give us something else to talk about while we wait for the other six games on this list to be published, it might be worth adding to the thread... |

| Okay, here goes: - Balladeer's Not-Quite-So-Good Mario Games Wot He's Played:
Super Mario Bros. - It just hasn't aged well. All the ideas that were original at the time have been done to death now, and the colours seem dark and dull in the light of the modern day.
NSMB/NSMBWii/NSMB2 - Only the middle one was actually a mistake: the other two are solid but unremarkable. But this is Mario, and unremarkable isn't good enough. NSMBU was just enough to rescue the franchise from dismal gloomy mediocrity, but the next one had better do something special.
Super Mario 3D Land - I don't know why everyone laps this up. Blocky, unimaginative levels, and a dash button instead of analogue movement. The worst 3D Mario.
Mario Tennis Open - Camelot are back with a... squelch. They've managed to make the best Mario Sports franchise utterly soulless, not to mention completely unbalanced due to the upgradable Miis. What with this and Golden Sun: Dark Dawn, have the once-masters lost their touch?
Paper Mario Sticker Star - To nobody's surprise. No levelling up, no companions (Kirsty doesn't count), not much clever dialogue and some very obtuse puzzles. Just not much fun.
Lock and load. |

| Totally disagree with the SMB comments - I don't think it's aged badly whatsoever. Granted, because it was such a pioneer a lot of its mechanics cropped up elsewhere, but it's an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" scenario in my eyes. I enjoy firing up Super Mario Bros and blasting through it more than with many other Mario games.
I was going to send in dishonourables, but I realised that there weren't any stinkers out of the Mario games I'd played! |

| Even a weaker Mario game still has plenty of good things going for it, though if I were to mention a dishonourable it would have to be Dr. Mario. I didn't find the Super Mario Strikers on the GameCube and Mario Clash on the Virtual Boy (both of which I only played twice, to be fair) to be too clever either. I've heard Super Mario Pinball on the GBA is a genuine duffer, maybe that would be a dishonourable had I played it. |

| I too still enjoy SMB for what it is. It's still fun to run through, and I'm still discovering the odd accessible warp pipe to this day. Whether this is due to faulty memory or repetitive levels remains to be seen. The only real gripe I have with it is Mario's somewhat stiff in-jump corrective steer. It feels a bit like trying to get a knee joint to go the other way.
I forgive this, though, because at least it's possible to adjust to it, and at least it exists, as it doesn't at all high-regarded NES platformers/adventures like Castlevania. |

For me, it's "if it ain't broke, then it'll suffer gradual wear until it does." |

- There's only one 2D Mario platformer in my top ten: not so much room for great level design in only two dimensions. But if nothing else, SMW was the Mario platformer to have got Yoshi right until Galaxy 2, twenty years later. That merits a place in my top ten.
STU_THE_GREAT SAYS - - Quote :
- The only game on this list I've played so much I'm actually sick to death of it. The highlight if the 2D Mario franchise.
I SAY - As playable and uniquely rewarding today as it was twenty-two years ago. One of Nintendo’s best platforming experiences to date, and a true classic.

| Unfortunately I've never got on with this one. I've tried several times but never quite worked out what people like about it. I thought it would probably show up at some point so now that's out of the way let's hope for a perfect top 5! |

| This didn't make my list, but if it was a top 11, it would have. Fond memories of this - first time I ever played it was on a dusty old French SNES at a holiday villa before picking it up on Wii VC. A natural and brilliant progression from the NES Marios. |

| My tenth place. This was GBA for me, and while we never quite got intimate enough, we were certainly at "good friends" level. Mind you, I used a walkthrough liberally to find the secret exits.
Sadly, if Phillips' cruel response to my predictions is correct, that means one of my top six (Mario Tennis being 3) missed out. All of them better games than World. Sob. |

| A wonderful game and no mistake, but not quite as pick-up-play today as the NES games are for my money. Also the only Mario game with a world map I actually managed to get lost on and therefore never finished the game. |

You've got your dig in, now let's stick to Mario, aye? ~ I've got to say, I thought SMW was going to finish near the top of the list. Maybe not a load of first place votes, but I thought it was going to be more consistently involved in the PM's I received. Tomorrow night's game plays the role that I thought World would, mind... |

| Although I didn't vote for it you can't argue with the classics. I don't know why I never took to it like the previous 2D Mario games. |

That pretty much sums it up for me. It's so easy to boot up SMB and blast through it, SMW requires more of an investment. Although mandlecreed would probably disagree, speedrunning maniac that he is. |

- JAY MOYLES - First off - I fucking love FLUDD. I think it's a great way to platform and allows for a lot of mad leaps across the level. I wasn't enamoured with Mario 64, but this, this I adored. For one, its music and how it looked blew me away. I hadn't played anything that nice looking before (and wouldn't until Wind Waker rolled in) and its music fell into that same category of instantly classic as Super Mario Bros before it. Each world was a treat to explore and clean up, and Isle Delfino is the best hub world in any game, bar none. Controversial? Yeah, not many people liked it. But I think they're wrong - I think this is one of the best platformers of all time.
ANDYMAN949 SAYS - - Quote :
- Many people may not like FLUDD but I loved him. He added a fair amount of variety to the game. He gave you the power to float, blast to great heights, run crazy fast and just remove paint. Isle Delfino was great fun to explore and every individual world was fantastic. Of course using FLUDD so much also meant you really felt the effect of not having him anymore and that really showed in the levels without him. They are probably the most fun platforming moments I have ever had.
I SAY - There was never any danger of this not making the list - never left the top ten from the first vote onwards, as it appeared on the majority of top tens that I recieved, as well as in ninth on my own. I think we'd all agree that it wasn't as polished as it should have been - Miyamoto has since admitted that it was a bit rushed - and that it had it's fair share of bugs and repetition. Yet it's more Mario platforming excellence, taking us to a joyfully tropical world that I'd like to revisit someday (more than Mario's 3D Land/World, truth be told). Good value for fifth.
