Your actual top 10/20/25/50/100/200 games - have you ever?

Hi all,

Over the last few years we have, for various votes, worked out our e.g. top 10 Wii games, 3DS games, Mario games and so on. This sort of things has led me to have a serious think about my favourite games of all time, across the gaming spectrum.
I wouldn't dare bore you with it here, but I got as far as my top 100 (I wrote an Excel macro to shift them up and down a list and everything). Basically I'm a huge nerd who has to have everything written down in a list so I can give a consistent answer when someone asks me "what's your favourite ...".

Has anyone else even been as sad as I have and worked out their all-time favourite list? If so, is there a number you can comfortably get to? Did you set yourself any arbitrary rules? Etc. etc. etc. etc.

Oh, and I don't suggest we start a top 100 games poll; too wide-spread and hectic.

Man, that's tough - really good idea, but it's going to be tough. I like the idea of an Excel list, shifting them up and down. I'll have to try that.

Well, not surprisingly, it's Ocarina of Time. Probably mostly for nostalgic reasons but... hey, that's how it goes.

It's certainly not something I've dared to think of. The vote threads have been hard enough for me to decide for 1 platform alone let alone comparing them against each other. I don't even have a favourite because I'm too indecisive!

I have probably thought of something similar: my list of 10/10 games, as of right now.

I tend to be fairly harsh on how I mark games out of ten. Not Edge levels of harsh, but definitely not CVG levels of generous either. So it's very rare that I'll award a game 10/10 (in my head): as an example, I'm not sure there'd be a single one on the 3DS at the moment, despite its great and varied line-up. ALBW's too easy, KIU's too disconnected, OoT3D's a port (more on that below). I think I've narrowed it down to the list below, in roughly chronological order:

SM64 (still my favourite game ever)
OoT and OoT3D combined (this is an odd one. The original has aged too badly to get a 10/10; OoT3D fixes that, but is a port. So the two together get a 10/10 where neither would on its own)
SSBM
Metroid Prime
Paper Mario TTYD
Meteos
Twilight Princess
SSBB
Pokémon HGSS (okay, so this is a port too, but it's a really good port that adds so very much to the original)
Ghost Trick
Xenoblade

So I guess that's my top eleven? I think I'd have to remove HGSS to make a top ten.

I've given it loads of thought but never actually tried to write it out. I don't think I could do a Top Ten, just my Ten Favourites. The order would change every single day.

Yep as Buska said the order could easily change day to day but.....here's a top ten:

1. Dark Souls - most rewarding game & believable world I've ever experienced.
2. MH3U/Tri - Boss battles the game but no hunt is ever the same.
3. Super Metroid
4. Metroid Prime
5. Metroid Fusion
6. Super Mario Bros 2
7. Ghost Trick
8. ISS pro evo soccer 2
9. Goldeneye 007
10. Timesplitters 2

We had a Top Ten thread on the NGamer forum, if I remember rightly. I've never thought beyond that - the ten alone would chop and change madly anyway!

I could probably achieve a top ten if I really thought about it, but beyond that is another matter- there's probably not much of a distinction between eleventh and twentythird, by example.

Rating all my games out of ten is another matter, though- if we consider all these games to be more or less equal, they're probably quantifiably listable.

I have a ton of trouble thinking of a top ten nowadays, it used to be easy but now? Not so much. If I had to name some, not in any particular order mind you, it would be something like:

.) "Latest Version" Pokemon (Platinum would be my favourite from a region and postgame activity standpoint, but due to how much more streamlined the series has become since gen four I couldn't handle going back to gen four for that stuff now)
.) The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker
.) Zelda Maroras Mask
.) Persona 3 portable (Almost certain to be replaced by 4 golden if it keeps its current level of quality)
.) Ys 7 (Many people would probably think this should be Felghana, but I just plain enjoyed 7 more, and this'll probably to be replaced by celceta when I play it)
.) Soulcalibur 2
.) Super Smash Bros melee (if 4 ends up being as good as it looks the wii u game might topple this)
.) Mario Kart Wii
.) xenoblade

Those aren't the best games I've played either, just my favourites that I can name off the top of my head. I could delve deeper if I tried, but I figure if it doesn't come straight to my mind it isn't a game that should be classed as a favourite of mine.

Actually wouldn't heart gold and soul silver be remakes instead of ports?

I suppose it would be, given how much new stuff they threw into the mix.

It's the only entry I've played online, therefore the entry I had the most fun with. Plus the rainbow road and koopa cape were two of my favourite tracks in the series. Smile

I've been playing HeartGold again, incidentally.

Whenever it comes to making one I have a cast iron top 3 (Portal 1st, Persona 4 Golden 2nd, Gold/Silver 3rd) and then the rest flit about depending on what I've been playing. Usually have Advance Wars Dual Strike and Mario Kart DS somewhere near the top along with one of Galaxy 2 or Sunshine, and then the rest is open season.

This is something I've thought about on occasion, but like others say, too big a task to come up with a definite list. Had a quick scroll through Wikipedia's games lists for all the consoles I've owned, here's a wall of text of some of my top games ever (probably some omissions and/or some strange inclusions)...

It's a hard one, normally I say these 5 in no real order
Wind Waker, Pokemon B/R//Y, Bioshock, Shenmue II, Mortal Kombat II

But some mainly MKII has aged quite a bit and is there just for nostalgia reasons more then anything and there is so many more classic's like Super Mario 64, Halo, Mass Effect, Jade Empire, Sonic 2 just to name a few.

How could I forget about wwf no mercy, this also reminds of other great games such as the fire pro wrestling series.

Hey, there's nothing wrong with nostalgia. Zelda II's really high on my list, despite being unfairly hard; however it was the first NES game I ever saw, and, after years of poorly-thought-out home computer games, an example of what games could be.

Right, I'll have a go. I'm giving myself the arbitrary rule of one game from any given series, otherwise 2-10 would just be Zelda and Metal Gear games. That also makes up for my inability to choose from certain series; where it says Sonic Adventure, you could take that to mean "a sonic game", with adventure being my favourite at the given moment.

The Definitive Top Ten Games of All Time:

Notable exceptions are Dark Souls and Monster Hunter, both of which I do love but I just haven't played enough of them yet. They'll be up there when I've put the hours in, once I'm retired. I also haven't included Smash Bros as although I've played a lot of Brawl and I do love it to bits, I feel that I wouldn't love it half as much if I wasn't so attached to the characters from their own games.

If we add all are top 10s together we would have a overall top 10, I know that's how forms have done it. And then if some decides to do a top something some time just edit the overall 10.

So drunka your 4th fav really is your 11th fav if you would put the legend of metal gear zelda game's 2-10.

And Sonic Adventure you mad bro adventure 2 is far better and that's not even in the same league as 1, 2, 3, knuckles, CD or Pocket Adventure.

That was just an example for how I was doing my list. Obviously I wouldn't include Adventure when I hadn't even included Snake, Pong or them little games full of shampoo that you take into the bath and use bubbles to make hoops land on sticks.

Nice. Although I liked those games! I had a DK one with hoops and an SM64 one with balls.
