I think there will be two 2D Zelda's in the last 7, one being ALBW which I'm guessing is the one your saying is actually is better then Minish Cap, where the other one that's likely to appear being LttP which has the nostalgia value but how many of us would have actually played it when it came out though, to have the nostalgia part from maybe ZeroBob.

| A couple of surprising results there - I didn't expect Four Swords on the list, but Minish is a pleasant surprise to see. It's one I've barely played (may have beaten the first dungeon, can't recall) but I enjoyed what I did play! |

| Number 7: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's MaskNintendo 64, 3DS 38 points, 0 firstsDeath, mourning and the melancholy of the end of days pervade the number 7 placing, Nintendo's weirdest Zelda and the first spanner in the works for me trying to have a picture of Zelda herself for each game. - You said:
"Often spoke of as the best, for me it's the worst of the 3D Zelda games but that's by no means a bad thing, this still has plenty going for it. The darkness and zaniness of it all is as good as it gets and being able to take control of the different masks added a nice twist to it. The 3 days twist however is what let it down for me as I often felt rushed and that's not what Zelda games are about for me."
"This game is terrifying, bleak, dark, sad, awful. Any sense of story progression is eliminated when going back in time. Termina itself feels a bit off, even before you get to the slowly descending moon, and the sense of desolation on the third day. It'll never be a favourite of mine, but by Nayru is it memorable."
"The Zelda series is so wonderful, In my opinion, this being the 4th best Zelda, it's still the 7th best Anything. But there's one admission I must provide: I didn't like this at the time. It felt like a cheap re-hash of Ocarina of Time. Not so much the engine (we didn't have time to worry about this at the turn of the millennium) but in the abilities and objects scattered throughout Termina; see also the 3 day cycle that, being my first trip through and leading to lots of mistakes, became immensely frustrating to repeat. In fact, during the last section of the game, I got fed up with one part and put the game away for a month - unheard of. However, like everything post-Ocarina, it took the completion of the game - and a subsequent replaying - to appreciate how clever the game was. All of the people in the world, coming to terms with their demise."
"I could write pages about how much I love this game – from its sidequests to its darker tone, this game stands apart from the rest by how different it feels. You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?"
"DAWN OF THE FINAL DAY – 24 HOURS REMAIN. This is the darkest Zelda game, and I think the series needs more games like Majora's Mask. It's all fine and well having Link traipse about dungeons with a smile on his face, but a decidedly more adult Zelda – I mean in terms of theme, you dirty buggers – is something relatively unexplored. Majora's Mask is proof that it can work – rewinding time to stave the inevitable apocalypse, helping out the doomed townspeople and transforming into different Hylian races by wearing their death masks. No seriously, that's what that is. I think it's wonderfully unique – and yes, it is better than Ocarina of Time. "
- I say:
I didn't get around to properly playing this until the 3DS, but boy am I glad I did. Delightfully weird, tonally consistent, this tells a very memorable story. It reminds me of a theme discussed multiple times in the most recent series of Doctor Who: something can be sad and beautiful at the same time. Plus, it gave us the delightfully creepy BEN DROWNED.
- They said:
The Mask says:" Well this is a spicy meat-a-ball! Just because something is colourful and funny and weird, doesn't mean it ain't dark and creepy, y'see? This game is SHA-MOKING."
It wasn't until this one I realised I could just search the word "Majora" on Word and find people's entries much more quickly. Shout out to the person who referenced the game repeatedly in their top ten without voting for it! |

You're using Word?! Excel, baby, Excel! Also, if the shout out is to me (cos I fits the bill, and that), I only did it twice (which technically is 'repeatedly', I s'pose; bang to rights, guv - I'll come quietly) and the reason I didn't vote for it is because I haven't finished it. Voting for a game I haven't finished doesn't sit right with me. |

| I'd disagree, by a game, with this being the worst 3D Zelda. But I'm surprised to see this coming so low (it was my sixth, and I'm not a huge fan of the game, I remember it being NGamer's favourite). Still wasn't my favourite, but... Well, the second comment is mine, says most of it already. |

| Number 6: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the PastSNES, GBA 38 points, 1 firstThe game that created many of the series' iconic tropes, Super Nintendo's Link to the Past slips in at six. - You said:
"Bah BAH, bah bah bah-bah-bah-baaaaaaah, bah BAH bah, bah bah bah-bah-bah, bah baaaaaaah... Its younger brother may have stolen its thunder, but the older sibling holds the edge on challenge, and the first Turtle Rock actually lasts more than ten minutes."
"What a game. The main reason that I love ALTTP is that it is such a step up for the series: the previous top-down Zelda game was the NES original, remember. Whilst that was a fine game, ALTTP took everything about it and made it bigger and prettier, whilst giving the player more to do, see, collect and achieve. It introduces series staples at a ridiculous rate and is tremendous fun to (Pegasus) boot. The dev team were really allowed to stretch themselves and it shows in every minute and every pixel. A brilliant, brilliant game."
"The one that made Zelda good for me, before this Zelda was just another pixeled mess and set the template for what all 2D Zeldas should be."
"The pinnacle. A game that isn't afraid to be dark, isn't afraid to be bright (the day-glo colours of the Light World aren't always totally realistic), isn't afraid to be humourous, and isn't afraid to be atmospheric. It's also happy to challenge you and happy to hide objects of value in obscure pockets of its twin overworlds. The traditional 'big idea' of this game, the Light/Dark world flipping, is an absolute revelation that the series has drawn on for nearly every iteration since. A true classic."
"classic, my first Zelda and it's still brilliant today."
"I got this really late in the SNES' lifetime. For some reason, despite enjoying the NES games, I never took the plunge. What a dummy. From the get-go, with the opening rescue of Zelda, this game blew any other adventure game out of the water. Worlds upon worlds to get lost in; secrets; characters… this made Zelda games "a thing", and it made Zelda fans of most of my friends and family. As a kid, I probably didn't appreciate how much of a marvel this was at the time. I'm almost tempted to stop writing, and go and play it again right now. A Link Between Worlds is probably technically a better game, but it has too much familiarity to this - the game that cemented Zelda-ness, and made the world a better place."
"I never got on with this, and it's a real shame. Many laud this as being the best 2D Zelda, but I couldn't see it. Now, I can't look past ALBW, which casts a very large shadow over this indeed. I need to go back and play it again as I'll likely get on with it better, but there's something about 2D Zelda combat that keeps me from fully appreciating the game."
- I say:
The gorgeous sprite art and tight dungeon design has aged much better than the N64's dodgy polygons, and the SNES origins for so much of Zelda's future is plain to see. I've said before though, I find it to be a little more slow and pompous than the meagre aesthetic can actually support. I prefer the more immediate handheld games for 2D Zeldas, and the 3D games for the more grandiose adventuring.
- They said:
Kanye says:" Let me stop you right there, and I'mma let you finish, but Link to the Past is the greatest Zelda of all time. Of all time. Sixth is a god damn travesty. This game might be all about the past, but for videogaming as an art form it represented the futch."

| Thank goodness it appeared here rather than any higher. It came ninth on my list, the last "good" Zelda I've played before some "a'right" ones. While good, I feel LttP is often overrated in the modern day. It's not like MM, where I'm not so keen on what it does - it just doesn't do what it does as well as ALBW or Minish Cap. It feels soulless, lacking in character, compared to those games. I feel like LttP rides a wave of nostalgia, from people such as commenter five, rather than standing up on its own merits in today's light. BUT I know that Drunka is a positive man who likes positive comments. I'm sure this was an absolute revelation at the time, the pixel art and soundtrack hold up okay in the light of the modern day, and even now it's a massive sprawling adventure, chock-full of secrets. The world is enormous, very impressive for a SNES game, full of exploration to do and areas to seek out, without any of the handholding of later games. (I used a walkthrough pretty thoroughly when I played it on the GBA. ) Not easy, either, even when you know what you're doing. Plus, it laid the groundwork for ALBW, and that alone merits some praise! - Let's guess the order of the top five!:
I'm sure these games will be the right choices, but I'm not so sure about the order. I'm fairly confident about the top three...
5th Skyward Sword 4th ALBW 3rd Twilight Princess 2nd OoT 1st WW

Yes. That would have been awful. On the other hand - my hand - I had hoped that ALttP would squeeze into the top five, somehow. That not being the case, sixth is pretty respectable for a game that has divided the voters. I love it (it's my number 1 (I'm like a Wolf Link to get it (hope someone gets that (also aiming to break the current record for nested brackets in the forum (which is odd, because I don't know what the record is))))) because it was such a quantum leap for the series. Although that might place the game as more 'of its time' (the past?!) than 'of today', it still holds up pretty well, in my humble, unsubtle and often wrong opinion. |

| I think that's what the divide will be, for the most part - those who played it back in the day, and see the quantum leap (quanta are usually pretty small, how does that work? ); and those who played it now, and see it for what it is today. With apologies to Jimbob and Zero: I just think the younger forumites' glasses are likely to be less rose-tinted here! Don't worry, our turn to be rose-tinted will come later... |

| Number 5: The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds3DS 52 points, 1 firstSlipping in just ahead of its predecessor, 3DS' open-world masterclass kicks off our top five! - You said:
"The most fun and absorbing handheld Zelda yet. The simple idea of allowing Link to stick to walls is both a revelation and a revolution which gives ALBW classic status all by itself. Then there's the way that it subverts the familiar ALTTP world: there are just enough changes to make it feel both familiar and alien at the same time. The dungeons may not have been that impressive for the series but the love that went into making the overworld and the quirky little story is clear to see."
"What a fine adventure this is. The cast of characters is few - and, technically, fewer than you would think - but the adventure is brilliant and really well-crafted. The dungeons are a little throwaway (possibly as a consequence of the item-renting system, which I did not like) but the game's second big idea turns it into a series highlight. Word to the ending, as well."
"This game is pure concentrated Zelda. It tidies up a lot of the ideas that the Actual Best 2D Zelda game invented 20 years previously, and throws the usual Zelda structure up in the air, allowing for water-cooler discussion about others' routes through the game. The only real downside is its familiarity to its predecessor."
"2D Zelda games and I don't get along like I do with 3D Zelda. Don't get me wrong, we have fun together and I enjoy my time with 2D Zelda, but I end up pining for 3D Zelda in the end. I don't really like the combat and the dungeons don't feel as spectacular. But ALBW absolutely changed my mind on that – this is a masterfully worked 2D Zelda game. The rental items are a superb mechanic and really heightens the sense of exploration. Zelda has a habit of funnelling you towards your next dungeon, but this just sets you free. More importantly, it gives a use to those bloody rupees! ALBW's puzzles are some of the best the series has seen too thanks to the wall-merge ability. Tip top Zelda fun."
"A surprisingly brilliant handheld entry, I don't think anyone was expecting this to be as brilliant as it was."
"A Link Between Worlds - A real surprise for me, as someone who always struggled to get along with 2D Zelda games this really clicked with me, loved the gimmick of being able to move in to walls, they really made the most of it. Would love more of this, 2D Zelda has a future, as long as it's as good as this belter."
"I really don't like the game's free-roaming structure. It hinders story development, and without a linearly increasing collection of items, the puzzles that can be designed are hindered in scope. That this game is still utterly bloody fantastic despite this is a testament to every other aspect of the game. In particular, hieroglyphing picks up the puzzling slack, turning a 2D game into a 3D one by forcing you to think about the walls and how they line up. LttP's world has never looked or played so well."
- I say:
I really like this one. A grand way to spend a Christmas avoiding my family, with loveable characters in a charming world. The gameplay was slick, exploring the world was brilliant and the look, which I disliked in screenshots, grew on me immensely. Plus, those milk bar tunes! Really nice stuff.
- They said:
Dubledore says:" Ten points to Nintendo for this one. As a painting myself, I can tell you that being confined to a two-dimensional plane isn't all it's cracked up to be, but this game makes it look fun. I've whiled away many an evening with my 3DS and some sherbert lemons. And the ending! More shocking than the Half Blood Prince, I'd say."
Might be some minor scheduling changes next week, to avoid making myself do the most work on the days I'm home the least.

| Yeah, I wasn't sure whether this would top SS. It deserved to in my mind, mostly for reasons I'll say when SS comes out undeservedly high - but ALBW was my third, my favourite 2D Zelda, my favourite 3DS game, and an absolutely blinding offering all round. Good show. |
