Here's the official release date trailer. It's looking mighty fine, if you ask me! Another day one-er for The Zero.

I've never been big on 2D Sonic, but that was a neat trailer. I'll be looking for the opinion of some resident 2D Sonicphobes before jumping on board, I reckon.

My opinion: even from that little hand-drawn sketchy bit, he still looks like a twerp.

I liked that art style! Better than "WHOA HEY THE EDGE" 3D Sonic.

If this is half as good as the great Sonics, then this could make my Top 5 Games of the Year from what I've seen.

Folk jumped the gun when they said that Breath of the Wild was the best game of all time. If the developers pull this off and it lives up the Mega Drive originals, then Breath of the Wild won't even be the best game on the Switch. Sonic Mania has the makings of to be a stone cold classic.
Mind you, I said the same thing about Yooka-Laylee, and, err...

The cheek of it! The four Mega Drive ones are really good, and Sonic Colours held its own on the old Wii.

"Held its own" isn't the same as great! And the originals are crap after the first level, when you can't just hold right any more and you have to deal with controls.
To be fair, though, I was forgetting Sonic Rush, the one good Sonic.

Does that really matter though? There's plenty of retail games that come out at 20 quid even Little Nightmares done it recently, it's the content in/style of game that should determine the price point.
So when games like PuyoPuyo Tetris/USFII/Bomberman R don't go for that price point folk have the right to say it's stupid.

Yeah their is no reason why physical games can't cost £20 like Little Nightmares but like I've said before, my understanding why Puyo Puyo Tetris, RIME, Sina Mora (I think it's called that) are more expensive on Switch then the other systems is because of the cartridge, seems were back to the N64 days.
If it's true that it costs $10 for the smallest cart, then I can understand why Capcom are trying to charge what they are for USFII but I see it more as the game is $9.99 on XBL, $10 for the cart, you've added in two characters which are palette swaps along with getting to run on Switch and servers etc now is that worth $14.99 to me and the answer is No.
If they had brought USFII out for £24.99-27.99, I could go yeah you want me to pay around a fiver for the extra work and $10 for the cart.

Surely you forgot to mention the original there? Platforming at it's purest.

Less than a week to go until this is out (for £15.99 on the eShop), and SEGA have been previewing a few of the modes, stages and tunes, such as these:

Just watched that first video - I didn't realise they've re-created 2-player squidge-o-vision! How do people feel about that? If I was being cynical, it could seem to be a bit like bringing back loading stuff from tape, for nostalgia purposes. I guess that's Sonic Mania though; I'm 100 times more pleased that this exists than Sonic Forces.

So looking forward to this! I've decided not to watch any of the gameplay videos so I'm not spoiled. If you'd said to SNES vs. Mega Drive era Zero that he'd be mad keen to play a Sonic game, he'd have laughed you out of the Maths classroom.

This has been reviewing really well - so well in fact that I'm considering taking a look at this, despite my general distaste of 2D Sonic. Any takers here? I do value GNamer's opinion the most, after all.

I've picked it up, it very much feels like Sonic 3, so if you're not a fan of that I wouldn't bother. It's alright so far, really wish they'd have ditched the life system mind.

It's everything I wanted and more, didn't look at anything on the game other than the original trailer so I wasn't aware of all the remake levels but they're a brilliant nostalgia trip. The completely new levels feel even better and more creative than those so if anything I'd have liked more new stuff but regardless it still feels completely fresh and I'd recommend this to anyone. I kind of feel bad for Sonic Forces now because I can't see how this can keep up with Mania, it's that damm good.

Took this for a spin dash earlier. It plays exactly like the Mega Drive era Sonic games, which I reckon makes it a tremendous success.

Does that mean its really fun in the easy earl levels and the bits where it basically plays itself, but frustrating and crap whenever you have to do any platforming
I'm being facetious, I do have a very small soft spot for sonic as the first games and console I remember was my nan's Master System and Sonic.
