Jet Force Gemini’s upcoming addition to the N64 Switch Online app is a welcome surprise. I don’t think this is a game any of us have talked about much at all, either on here or on the old NGamer Forums.
I’ve not put much time into Jet Force Gemini whatsoever. Apart from looking nice in N64 Magazine’s previews it didn’t overly interest me when it released, I passed on it when it was new. I was sorted with Donkey Kong 64 that Christmas, and Jet Force Gemini just seemed like a Rare collect-a-thon too many. The price soon dropped but I still didn’t get round to picking it up until, of all times, I made a visit to Gamestation on the day when I finished secondary school in 2006 and got it for (I think) 99p. The controls quickly flummoxed me though, and having the hindsight to research online that it’s a lengthy and challenging game with loads of backtracking, I gave up quickly.
I’ll definitely boot it up and see how things are in 2023, but what about youse – did anybody reading play Jet Force Gemini?

I've never played it - honestly, I've very little first-hand experience with most of Rare's catalogue. One I'll be sure to check out myself.

I've not played it but my pal sent me a very excited message. He's from the Americas though, so who knows . . ?

I've just heard people moaning about how it hasn't aged well. Which, you know, it probably hasn't, but neither have half they games they probably love from that era.

I managed to play about 5 minutes of someone else's copy way back and wasn't bothered about seeing more of it, will still give it a crack this time around though.
It's still not Snowboard Kids though.

It is nice that there's another Rare game that's on its way to the N64 online thingy (fingers crossed for Banjo Tooie - N64 frame-rate aside, I am suspecting it may have actually aged better). JFG looked like "not my thing" but I'll give it a go now, that's for sure. Gotta be better than Operation Winback!

I'll have you know I've fond memories of cornering Cappa and kicking his head in playing as some speccy lad during a multiplayer session of Operation Winback.

WinBack really is janky as hell but the story mode has that unintentional b movie vibe to it which I enjoyed enough to play about 5/6 hours. (Rebirth thread revisit anyone?)

I really should play Winback on Switch, aside from the multiplayer session I played it back in the day and remember quite enjoying it.

Three games added to N64 NSO in 1080°, Harvest Moon and Jet Force Gemini
JFG is the one I may play and that's only due to the rebirth thread.

It's nice that those games are available (especially JFG) and that's all I really have to say on the matter.

I've never played 1080 but I've fond memories of Coolboarders over on the PlayStation side of things. How similar are they for those that have experiences with both?

While not quite WWF No Mercy diggity dog levels this song was a good first impression on the character menu screen. (Don't think I've played coolboarders either)

That moves in nicely to number three on my N64 Title Theme countdown, nestled neatly behind No Mercy and Buck Bumble.

You're doing a massive disservice to Cruis'n World's main theme there:

I’ve said my piece about Jet Force Gemini up above, though 1080 will get another playthrough before I earnestly give that another go. I think 1080 is the ideal sort of game for Switch Online, in that it’s quite short but unusual, stylish and designed differently from pretty much anything else on the app.
I made sure to get Harvest Moon 64 when the Wii U eShop was about to close but I think I’m likelier to play it on Switch Online. Mind you, that’s still not massively likely: I reached the end of the Game Boy Colour original but my many efforts to revisit the series since (on GameCube, DS, 3DS, Virtual Console and elsewhere) have all ended soon after starting.
~
We’ve reached the point where there’s no further N64 games announced for Switch Online. There doesn’t appear to be a lot of obvious options remaining, perhaps just Super Smash Bros. and the Cruis’n games from Nintendo. Jet Force Gemini’s unexpected arrival certainly opens the door for other Rare stuff like Killer Instinct Gold, Blast Corps and Diddy Kong Racing as well, plus you’d also assume that Banjo-Kazooie and Goldeneye 007 lead the way to Banjo-Tooie and Perfect Dark respectively.
Castlevania Legends’ very random Game Boy Online re-emergence hopefully shows that Konami is willing to contribute to these apps where they’re not already planning other things for those IP. Maybe they’ll have other ideas for the N64’s Castlevania, Goemon and Bomberman games, but if they don’t then they’d all be very welcome on Switch Online.

You'd have to imagine Super Smash Bros is a no brainer. I'd be keen to see Castlevania 64 turn up on the service too - it's one I've never played and whilst 3D Castlevania is mostly pretty ropey, I'd be interested to at least try it.

Goemon is one I'd love to play. Now that there's no more DLC for Ultimate, Smash could be a possibility.
Am I right in saying we don't have Donkey Kong 64 yet?

We do not and I've never played it so yes please, same to Goemon as that game really intrigues me, I'd happily take those over the likes of Smash Bros, as great as I'm sure that still is its not really a game we need.

I think Donkey Kong 64 is in the same place at Super Mario RPG was for all those years. I think it's heaven-sent for a remake, one where you don't have to retread everything you do five whole times.

I remember even back in the magazines people were complaining that it was a collect-a-thon but I've never played it so I wouldn't mind a bash.

I did grab, and 100%-ed, Donkey Kong 64 when it was on the Wii U VC. This is a comforting thought, as it means I never have to play it ever again ever. But don't let me stop you guys from playing it when it inevitably arrives - if you have been a Banjo fan(jo) it'd be interesting to see what you think; it almost feels like an alpha/beta test for Banjo Tooie to me.

Hissssssssss. My problem with DK64 wasn't even all the collecting, it gave my child brain its requisite hits of dopamine every time I got A Thing. It was that it was really hard in a way that felt faintly unfair to me at the time. I don't know if it'd still feel that way today, but I really don't want to see that sodding jack-in-the-box or Beaver Bother ever again.
