| Right, well, I had more time than I expected today to get everything collated together, so let's get this show on the road! The Hazelnut Based Chocolate Bar Award for Topic of the YearWithout a good topic to discuss, we cannot have good posts. Fortunately, we've had some cracking topics to get tucked into this year and keep us logging in every week to chat away. Which topics did you guys consider the best of the best? Let's find out. - Third Place:
La5t Game You Fini5hed And Your Thought5 - 8 points (three votes, two first places)You said: “My enthusiasm for typing up long multi-paragraph reviews is gone, but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy other folks’ contributions. It’s especially nice to read when others have picked up a game on my recommendation.”
“It’s just the most varied thread out there, you know? Everyone plays different things, and when they play the same things, they have different opinions. A lot of the time you get insights that you don’t necessarily get from bloated critic reviews.”
I say: This was one of my votes. An evergreen classic this one and a source of some of our best posts and discussion. Not much more to add than that!
- Second Place:
Andyman's tiertastic tier list thread that he definitely made up on his own - 10 points (five votes, one first place)You say: “I love rankings. This was a thread about rankings. I loved this thread.”
“It’s fascinating to see how indefensibly bad so many of your opinions are.”
“Another fun forum game that did well to show how varied opinions are here on GNamer.”
“Nice thread, name checks a cool dude.”
I say: Tribal tattoo Mario still haunts me. Fun thread, though!
- And your Topic of the Year 2022 is...:
Mario Strikers Battle League Football (now featuring a Smurf who cheats) - 15 points (five votes, five first places)You say: “Almost every single post not written by Mas during the league was an absolute delight. It wasn't only Cappa who looked forward to seeing the comedy headlines.”
“Far and away the best GNamer thread of 2022, it’s stuffed with the year’s greatest posts, daftest stories and funniest patter.”
“The league was heaps of fun, the 5 minute games every week were great of course but it was the the aftermath we seen on the forum that really shone through.”
“Really good fun, gave that game a life it definitely wouldn't have had otherwise.”
I say: Despite not even being a part of the league itself, it was my first place vote too. Easily the standout thread this year - "stuffed with the year's greatest posts" indeed. Will we see any of said posts in a later category?
- The best of the rest:
Last Retro Game You Finished And Your Thoughts – 2 points (one vote)
“I don't reply often but always give the reviews from Cappa a read, and it's great content.”
What's The Score – 2 points (one vote)
“It may not have seen it through the whole year but it was a fun game to play every month, even if it really made me hate some reviewers.”
AAA Gaming Angry Alligator – 2 points (one vote)
Elden Ring – 2 points (one vote)
“I liked Elden Ring and that was enhanced by talking to y'all.”
August's Game Release Thread – 1 point (one vote)
Official(?) Nintendo Consoles Music Thread v2.0 0 – 1 point (one vote)
I'm Doing a Game in a Game Jam – 1 point (one vote)
“He did! He did a game! It was fun! Look, this is a games forum, and one of our own made a game. It deserves a vote. What did you do that was better than this last year? Exactly.”
Pokemon Legends Arceus – 1 point (one vote)
“I liked Pokemon Legends Arceus and that was enhanced by talking to y'all.”

I forgot about the winner, as I saw it more of an event, which we don't have an award for this year. |

| That award announcement might be in the running for 2023's funniest post, both for the runner-up picture and for the comment that utterly rinses masofdas for his total non-engagement with the Mario Strikers patter.
My votes were in that same order, 3 2 1, can't argue with that.
What's The Score was a good game while it lasted, I'd join in again if Muss is ever bringing it back. |

| How about one of our new categories next? The Great Plateau Award for Best Area or Level in 2022Whilst some people might remember specific moments or look fondly back upon a particular character, this award is all about the areas or levels that knocked our socks off last year. Let's take a look. Unless specified, and as expected, all these have a singular vote. - Your favourite areas and zones!:
Black Space (OMORI)You say: “A heavily spoilery area in Omori, where the already creepy game dials the creep up to eleven. I loved it. Press F to pay respects to Mewo.”
I say: Whilst I preferred some of the more whimsical locales in OMORI, I can definitely understand Black Space leaving a big impression on you after playing it! Vanaheim (God of War: RagnarokYou say: "...."
I say: No comment from our voter, but I did enjoy Vanaheim a lot in GoW:R. The optional side area with the big frozen lightning bolt that changes as you complete objectives was a particular stand out in that game for me. The Slums (Stray)You say: “The most memorable area of the game, I just loved the neon, nighttime aesthetic and getting to spend some time with the various characters in the area made it feel more alive.”
I say: Still one my "to play" list, this one. The overall vibes of the game do seem up my alley at least! Siofra River (Elden Ring)You say: “It has to be that first journey down the Siofra River Well in Elden Ring, doesn't it? First time I have been truly gobsmacked by a game in a long while.”
I say: Can't disagree with the above. Going from gawking at the size of the overworld map to realising "holy shit, there's more underground too?!" was a wonderful moment. Alivel Mall (Kirby and the Forgotten LandYou say: “It’s a setting that you only ever see in side-scrolling beat ‘em ups, but this abandoned Braehead Shopping Centre made a fantastic impression in The Forgotten Land’s pre-release demo. A great and hummable tune, plenty of interesting uses of the game’s new mouthfeel ability and a memorable end-of-stage boss made this my standout level/area of 2022.”
I say: I think seeing Kirby wandering about decidedly more realistic environments than usual was a real novelty and it's good to hear this level stuck the landing in the game itself. The Citadel (Monster Hunter Rise: SunbreakYou say: "“The Gothic Western vibe wasn't as up my street as Rise's Japan-like zones, but the size, variety and colours made this a special place.”
I say: Whilst it's maybe not up there with my favourite Monster Hunter areas, I think the ruined castle and the Gothic vibes really meshed well with the fight against Malzeno here. Thumbs up. The Cabin (Inscryption)You say: “Unfortunately it is the best part of the game and that's why it doesn't chart quite as highly as it could, but it is the most phenomenal start to a game I've played in a long while.”
I say: I've seen the first area of this game played in a stream and the unsettling vibes of being trapped in this cabin with a creepy card-loving entity was something to behold. The Stanley Parable 2 Exhibition (The Stanley Parable Ultra DeluxeYou say: "“I love the idea of a videogame having to put together a sales pitch for its own updates.”
I say: Yep, big thumbs up to this area. Really witty stuff about sequels and content updates.- And who would have thought it... we actually got a winner!:
Area Zero (Pokémon Scarlet and VioletYou say: “Goosebumps! The final section of Scarlet was brilliant, and having all of the main kids go into this area was a major part of that. It felt like a forbidden zone, a bit like RBY’s Unknown Dungeon, but with MORE danger.”
I say: I'm a sucker for endgame areas where there's a sense of “you really shouldn't be here”, and exploring this zone really leaned into those vibes. It's the best finale Pokémon has ever put together. Also, Toby Fox music? Thumbs up to the max.
Anything you felt we missed in shouting out this year? Disagree heavily with anybody's picks? |

| I feel like other people came up with more impressive suggestions than me (mine was Black Space). Aside from having a mediocre gaming year in general, none of the games I did enjoy really blew me out of the park on world design. Even Xenoblade 3, from a series that's nailed that aspect with regularity, was a little disappointing on that front.
I played two of the other worlds, and they're both good picks - without, again, blowing me out of the park. Alivel Mall is definitely the Kirby FL level that most sticks in the memory, and felt like the best tonal balance between cute Kirby foes and the Miscellaneous Apocalypse. Area Zero had a great energy to it, like y'all say really good 'forbidden area' stuff, but was a bit too long without doing enough differently throughout or having enough specific points of interest to get my vote. Still, no qualms about it winning! |

| I'm also not too familiar with a lot of the locations but Black Space, Siofra River and Alivel Mall all look like very memorable areas. Of the areas I did visit I wasn't a huge fan of Vanaheim, beautiful to look at but too many annoying plantlife and overly complicated paths for my liking. Area Zero was probably the best on reflection, it really felt like a moment and that finale was chef's kiss worthy, I however chucked my vote at The Slums because I feel it deserved a shoutout, really pretty area and shows off some of Strays top nothch animation. |

Oh one more thing on this - I think the big reason the more whimsical locales didn't work so well for me is the whole 'inside Sunny's head' thing. I kind of dismissed them as dream worlds, and happy dreams don't make much of an impact on me. I find nightmares much more interesting. The other one I might have voted for from that game was Humphrey, which I thought was really interesting with a couple of corking bosses - and again, a nightmarish twist. But, er, by that point I was kind of willing the game to end. |

Humphrey was a good bit of the game and definitely a contender, but I think the pacing was a bit strung out in that section with all the puzzling going on and all. Anyway! Another award, shall we? The Golden Walloper Award for Funniest ForumiteIt's been another year where we've needed to use the forum as a form of escapism, I feel. What better form of escapism and forgetting about the state of the world is there than laughter? What, video games? Pipe down. It's all about the jokes. Who were the funniest lads on the forum in 2022? Let us see! - THIRD:
JOINT THIRD THAT ISMasofdas (one vote)You say: “The man with the plan.”
I say: Poor Mas will never live down that Overwatch moment. On topic though, Mas has slipped a couple of under the radar jokes this year and happy to see him getting some recognition for that!Jimbob (one vote)You say: "...."The Cappuccino Kid (one vote)You say: "...."Buskalilly (one vote)You say: “It's been a good year for the big man.”I say: I think it's safe to say the above trio are dependable for making us chuckle every year, but most years we'd see all three of these lads forming our podium in some shape or form. Who have you guys decided are our second and first placers in their place...?
- SECOND:
Treesmurf (two votes)You say: “Can't think of one specific one right now because I'm at work and tired, but I feel like he's had a couple of good gags out of nowhere this year.”
“I think because he occasionally just makes unexpectedly crass posts that take me by surprise, like when he revealed his lust for the school nurse in Pokemon SV, or when he said Freedom Planet 2 was a shit game for wankers.”
I say: A Smurf from outta nowhere! Well deserved - Smurf's uncontained horniness in the S/V thread made me chuckle a lot and that's just something in recent memory.
- And your winner is...:
The_Jaster (three votes)You say: “Flies under the radar with top-quality but consistent humour, and yes a lot of it is dunking on me. ”
“More like the Jester, made some right good puns and silly posts this year.”
I say: Looking through the top post thread, most of the funny posts have come from one man this year. Big thumbs up to the bearded wonder for his jokes this year! Will any of said posts place in our Post of the Year category? Only time will tell.
And that's yer lot for today. What's our thoughts? Feel like you or someone else was robbed? Happy with the podium placers? |

| After a little weekend intermission for the awards, let's get things back on the road. Why don't we bring about a bit of character to proceedings and hit you with a double whammy for being so patient over the weekend? The Luigi Mario Award for Best Side Character in 2022We all know the main characters in games - we usually play as them after all, and they usually leave the biggest impression on us. But sometimes, it's the side characters that end up stealing the spotlight. Who were your favourite sidekicks and supporting roles in 2022? - Your picks:
Blade (Marvel's Midnight Suns)You say: “Cool daywalking vampire. Always a good hang.”
I say: Is "always a good hang" something people say? Larry (Pokémon Scarlet/Violet)You say: "...."
I say: This was my vote. In amongst all the zany gym leaders, seeing Larry was a breath of fresh air. Having a likely depressed salary man working two jobs and generally sighing through life felt all too real. He was a highlight for sure. Professor Sado/Turo (Pokémon Scarlet/Violet)You say: “Oh my god, the ending. Oh my god!”
I say: Yep, definitely added to the already eerie forbidden vibes of Area Zero! Blaidd (Elden Ring)You say: "Yes, it's Elden Ring again. Shut up!"
I say: No such thing as too much Elden Ring, my friend. Blaidd had the benefit of being a big part of arguably the most story-driven section of anything in Elden Ring as a supporting character in Ranni's quest line, but I've got a lot of time for that wolf bro. Having him turn up to help you at Radahn's festival was great, too. The train (Bayonetta 3)You say: “I’m working my way through Bayonetta 3 and in equal measure I’m constantly surprised and confused by the new magical powers and Infernal Demons that the game introduces. Combining a character-based 18+ action game set in hell with Michael Portillo’s Great British Train Journey is inspired though.”
I say: I was so confused when this vote came in as I thought somebody had voted for Best Area again, but no, there's a literal train demon in Bayonetta 3. Kratos (God of War: Ragnarok)You say: “Sure he's technically the main character but he felt like more of a support act in Ragnarok and what a support he was. Throughout he's dependable and a voice of reason, not something I thought I'd ever say about the God of War. Top lad and Top Dad.”
I say: I can sort of understand where our voter is coming from here, but I personally would still consider Kratos as the main character in Ragnarok. But like I said, these award categories are a bit more loosey goosey and open to interpretation! Iron Fist Alexander (Elden Ring)You say: "Absolute LAD."
I say: Elden Ring nails its bro characters. Both Blaidd and Alexander are top examples of that and good mates to have in the Lands Between. Erend (Horizon Forbidden West)You say: “Whatever you feel about the "well, more dinosaur robots" aspect of the game, the acting is superb; Erend's probably the best, as a basic meat-head trying to learn how modern technology works in a very short space of time. Probably relatable.”
I say: I've not played the sequel, but, other than Aloy, this is one of the only characters that made an impression on me from the original game, so he must be doing something right!
And would you believe it... - Another actual winner!:
Eunie (Xenoblade Chronicles 3) - 2 votes, natchYou say: “The High Entia were the pompous aristocracy of Xenoblade 1. That the High Entia main character in Xenoblade 3 has a cockney accent as broad as the Mechonis' sword made me gurgle like a drain, as does the way she messes the more hoity-toity characters of the party around. Also, this. For days. On repeat.”
I say: No comment from our second voter, but I'll chime in and say that having started XC3 between opening the voting thread and this results post, I get it. My early impressions of the cast was that most of them were quite vanilla, but Eunie at least had some real character about her. The voter above comparing the High Entia in XC1 to how Eunie is in XC3 is really apt - having her as a brash cockney lass was inspired.
I did promise you a double whammy, so whilst you're still reeling from that results post, let's get you another! The Mario Mario Award for Best Main Character in 2022Right, enough of the side acts. Let's get moving on to our protagonists. It's what we all came here for. - Your picks:
The Narrator (The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe)You say: “Does this count? I guess you play as Stanley but all of the dialogue and characterisation is of The Narrator. He’s very well realised and made me laugh a lot, but there’s new content that’s actually quite poignant and touching too.”
I say: I'd say it counts! He's the reason you play The Stanley Parable, after all. Sonic the Hedgehog (Sonic Frontiers)You say: “Sonic is great and that’s a well-established and irrefutable fact that everybody on the GNamer Forum can readily agree upon. Why he’s the best main character of 2022 is because of the way he controls in Sonic Frontiers. They’ve never truly nailed Sonic’s movement in any of the 3D games; he’s too loose in Sonic Adventure; he’s too lethargic in Sonic Colours; he’s too inconsistent in Sonic Forces; and he’s too what-the-bloody-hell-happened-here in Sonic Lost World. In Frontiers though Sonic is very satisfying to maneuverer and it feels like you’re in total control too.”
I say: I feel the Internet has ruined my ability to take Sonic seriously. But, that's a very well reasoned post from our voter! Bayonetta (Bayonetta 3)You say: “Bayonetta had a game this year and she's one of my favourite characters of all time. She's confident, funny, good-hearted and sexy. I don't want to be with her; I want to be her.”
I say: I think there was some chatter recently in one of the threads about how Platinum almost undervalue how good it is to play as the witch herself and I wholeheartedly agree with that. She brings so much character to a game that without her would just be another spectacle action game. The Tarnished (Elden Ring)You say: “Can I pick my Tarnished character from Elden ring?”
I say: Sure. Why not? Kratos (God of War Ragnarok)You say: "...."
I say: Amused me greatly to see Kratos pop up in both main and supporting character categories. Guybrush Threepwood (Return to Monkey Island)You say: “A character that has stood the test of time, he's a goofy, loveable rogue and that's no different in Return to Monkey Island."
I say: Monkey Island is a big gap in my gaming knowledge - I should get around to that some day and hopefully I too will understand the greatness of Guybrush. Mio (Xenoblade Chronicles 3)You say: “An absolute sweetie I grew to really feel for over the hundred and sixty seven hours I spent with Xenoblade 3. And her views on long hair are funny."
I say: Unlike Eunie, I'm yet to fully understand Mio, but I only have a fraction of that enormous playtime from our voter, so I guess I will have to wait and see!Fox Lad (Tunic)You say: “The lad from Tunic. Is he just called Tunic? He's basically Link from Zelda II in cute fox form.”
I say: That's one cute fox lad.
And once again... a winner?! - The best main character in 2022 is...:
Jack (Final Fantasy Origin: Stranger of Paradise) - two votes again, of courseYou say: “Wears cool hats, wants to kill Chaos – good.”
I say: The most relatable video game protagonist. Villain starts monologuing? Tells the villain to fuck off. Character starts talking about their tragic backstory? Tells them it's all bullshit and then turns on a Limp Bizkit tribute group on his MP3 player and walks away. He has the coolest hats. He's the best.
So, with that, what's your thoughts on these two awards folks? Happy with the results? Livid at your favourite character not getting enough love? |

| Ah, I've just worked out what 'faf' stands for. Lovely. I actually gave Jay two combinations: he chose the one where he got a side-character winner, which was fair enough. My alternative was Eunie for MC (that's definitely Mas leaving a commentless void beneath her) and Pokémon SV's Penny for side-character. Larry is probably a better choice. Sada/Turo were good plot devices but mediocre characters. That train PhotoShop is magnificent though. No idea who the MC winner is. I've heard of all of the others. Who the heck is he? I'm reckoning that Jas put all of five seconds' thought into his votes for these categories. - JayMoyles wrote:

| I only played the demo of Stranger of Paradise but I'm quite glad to see some appreciation for Jack, he's an absolute bellend but in a very funny way. My knowledge of the best side character is limited and yet I've somehow attempted to do an impression of them with that line months ago on Game Game Show so they must have left an impression. |

| I didn't think of it in time but I should have submitted "Andy" as my vote for side character and "Luke" for main character, that would have been funny. |

Heeeeey! For The Tarnished one as my main character pick....maybe....but I was deadly serious about Blaidd as my side character pick. My votes were also written out in the order of Best level, main & then side character (all Elden Ring) hence the "yes, it's Elden Ring again. Shut up!" bit, but as Jay mentions he (Blaidd) is part of the biggest side quest in the game which starts in the first area & concludes after the final boss. I also grew a personal attachment to him as I my tarnished character had a red riding hood thing going on for most of the game. - The Cappuccino Kid wrote:

| Blaidd is great and probably a better pick than Alexander, who was a bit of a bantz vote. We should have colluded Jas so we could pick a winner I will say, Balla, that FROM games have some of the most interesting and mature character arcs in games. The message of Siegmeyer's quest in DaS is genuinely something that no media does often enough. |

Aye. I think Alexander would probably be a close second for me as far as side characters in ER go, having him & Blaidd for the festival boss is one of the best boss moments in video games. |
