Nintendo NX -> Nintendo Switch (Switchcraft)

Couldn't sleep, so I decided to check Twitter and...

IT'S HAPPENING AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

3pm UK time! When some of us are irreversibly at work! I'll just have to not burst with excitement...

FRICKING FINALLY. Going to book some time in my work calendar. That was... sudden.

Three minutes to get concept and games across to the public - and we know Nintendo aren't always that good at the former, at least. The more I think about it, the more I worry... let's just say my personal hype train hasn't reached full speed yet.

Oh I'm sure they'll muck it up somehow. I just hope they show off some games. (Release date would be nice as well, but I think they might save that for later.)

Anyway, I'm not minding if I don't see any new games or a release date today - genuinely, I'm only hoping that the core idea for the NX is a belter.

They've already messed up to be honest. They basically threw this in to the ether with barely so much as a warning beyond the vague rumours circulating the niche gaming communities the last month, that is not exactly how you capture the attention of the public. And again, what is so superior about how they're doing this than doing a reveal at either E3 or the Tokyo Game Show?

I mean yeah, we got notified, but we aren't the people Nintendo needs to sell this to. That tweet was effectively a preached verse to the choir.

This should the culmination of a month of hype on social media, not an anticlimatic "oh, by the way guys we're showing the NX off in eight hours, tune in if you want" tweet.



Now, if this is the start of a cycle building up to something meaningful in a month or less time then I'll happily change my tune. At this point though I'm just hoping we get something more coherent than the Wii U's announcement trailer, which wouldn't be terribly hard but given Nintendo seems to have absolutely no idea how to market anything. . .

I saw last night Miss Rodgers doing a Mas and calling people naughty words as she was like it's coming this week and all the people giving me abuse basically screw you.

Also saw leaked specs late last night then to wake up to see this, also who is around for a react podcast for after it all goes down at 3.

So best to keep expectations low I think, since more is to come I'd be fine with them just explaining the core concept of what it actually is.

From the leak last night but it's 4chan, so not the best of sources it made out not to be a hybrid but two system with the handheld having lower specs then the console but both built around the same architecture.

Basically what the PS4 & Pro and One & Scorpio are doing but instead of two consoles Nintendo are doing for two different devices.

I don't know if that would easy to explain like reggie takes out a Zelda cartridge from his pocket and you see him put in the console and plays it then he takes it out and puts in a handheld and plays it.

I know, I know... I can't help hoping though. This suggests that we might possibly get something from a Mario game... maybe. But I agree that it's best to just hope for some shots of the machine.

If they show Mario, Zelda and BG&E that would be a big three games also I could see Nintendo just showing games and no system.

Yeah sure but people did buy Wii U's for Bayo 2 a sequel to cult game and look at Shenmue III's funding which shows these cult games fans are rather rampant.

I'd say very few people will have bought a WiiU for Bayo 2. I'm not saying nobody will, but I think it's a small niche. Shenmue 3s funding was a for a console they all already owned.

We've got a skewed viewpoint within the gamer bubble, which is even less relevant when it comes to the NX because that's the Nintendo gamer bubble - not quite the same thing.  Even within the former, I know at least two people who would buy an NX for BG&E2 alone, but many more who would buy it for SMG3 alone.

We've already discussed killer apps. though, I think.  And I can't see BG&E2 being that.  What it would be is a major goodwill move for Nintendo, like Bayo 2 was.

I still don't understand Devil's Third though.  Why would anybody fund that?

I don't think BG&E2 would be a killer app but is a great good will and is something people will want but it's more in line of a second tier Nintendo game then a 3D Mario or a Zelda.

@Andy I know people who put £1000's towards Shenmue III and didn't / don't have a PS4.

Completely disagree. This is a 3 minute teaser, it basically /is/ an announcement of the real announcement. We'll likely get the full reveal in a week or two!

Aaaaaaaaaand... I have no idea what to think.

Games seen: BotW, first-person Skyrim-a-like, Super Mario Sonic Game, Mario Kart 8 King Boo Edition, and Generic Basketball Sim. 2017. Interesting. Good side of interesting... although SMSG did look a bit SM3DW-style cuboidal for my liking. Early days.

First console to launch with 8000 controllers?

Looked good, I do think some of the controller styles look kind of mad and I still fear for power limitations that it'll impose as the games didn't appear to be any worse looking in portable mode, plus there wasn't much there that the Wii U couldn't run...

Edit: Balla, pretty sure that just was Skyrim.

This tells us that it can shift Skyrim-style worlds around easily enough... but that was PS3-era originally wasn't it? I agree, nothing PS4 or up-looking there.

Look its a hybrid what a shock

Looks like a more streamlined gamepad with removable controllers which from the video shows MK8 Remaster and I guess NBA 2K17 being used with each half as one controller which will help with multiplayer having sort of 2 NES controllers out of the box.

The Pro controller does look like a 3rd party Xbox One controller, which will do a job and likely feels better then it looks.

Games seems to be BotW, MK8 Remaster, NBA 2K17, Skyrim Remaster, Mario 3D World 2 and Splatoon Remaster which the remaster have been rumoured.

Count me impressed. The light-ness of the controllers (and the tablet itself) give me hope of a £200 price point. Good mix of games shown. I need to watch it a few more times.
