Think that if you want.  Like you said, we've gone off-topic (not even talking about Tempest 2000 any more), and I don't fancy arguing what is largely a triviality.

Back to classic games on the GBA, then!

Disappointed with the number of abstains on Rhythm Tengoku & Warioware twisted (yes, I know they are imports) so if you haven't played them before then I highly recommend you seek them out.

Where's Stu & fronkhead when ye need them?

Ooh, interesting. How come, DL?

Also, I can only offer up a vote for Metroid: Zero Mission, which gets a rousing YES for improving greatly upon the somewhat dated NES original.

Is this an upvote, Jay? I've recorded it as an abstain for now.

I dunno, tell them to get their backsides off of Twitter and back here! I'd love to play both those games, but Tengoku was Japan only and I've talked about Japan-only games already. Abstained on WWT.

Do you mean when you said this?

Quote :
If you've not played something, and barely anyone you know has played it, and most of the available market hasn't had a chance to play it, and even the people who have played it haven't played a proper approved version of it (stops for breath), how can that possibly be a classic?

To answer your question, it simply comes down to (for imports anyway) can you enjoy the game without the language barrier getting in the way? With Tengoku that's a resounding yes, also a classic to me is an absolute must play experience which is another box it ticks.

Plus it'd feel wrong to not include a game that NGamer practically raved about nearly every issue.

Nah, that was M3 only. I just meant this:

Balladeer wrote:
There were a couple of games that I felt were better suited to "cult classic" status, like Rhythm Tengoku and Mother 3 - I think the game has to come out (officially) in more than just Japan for me to consider it a "classic".

The importing's a significant barrier (not as significant as in these region-locked days, but significant enough) which will prevent many people getting their hands on and playing RT. I would have snapped up a UK release, for one, because of how much NGC rambled on about it!

It was the generation I struggled to get on with. Probably too burned out by the games that game before it but to me that generation always felt the weakest to me.

I wonder whether it's a generational thing as well? Mr. Lemon has a few years on me, and RSE was the last gen. I really enjoyed. I can give you objective reasons why DP were a bit rubbish in comparison, but there was also a Spark (60 damage, 30% chance of paralysis) I really felt for those games that I've never really felt again. Suspect

It was D/P which turned me away from Pokemon for a good while - I thoroughly enjoyed R/S/E though. Smile

Whereas Diamond/Pearl re-ignited my joy for the series. By giving up on R/S it gave me a long enough break so I was excited again for Diamond and Pearl (and then HG/SS). In fact I can see a bit of a pattern:

Gen 1 Blue/Red - Loved and was obsessed with
Gen 2 Gold/Silver - Brilliant follow up that again I really enjoyed
Gen 3 Ruby/Sapphire - Couldn't get along with. Gave up
Gen 4 Diamond/Pearl - enough time had passed and was ready for Pokemon again. Enjoyed
(Also Gen 4 - HG - in no doubt partly due to nostalgia was a big fan and possibly my all time fave)
Gen 5 Black/White - Still had time for so enjoyed it for the most part.
Gen 6 X/Y - had lost interest again so never picked it up.

By my reckoning the next Gen will win me back.

Funnily enough, your excitement for Diamond and Pearl is basically what I felt for Black and White. I had a blast with Black and White, and I don't think I'd have enjoyed it as much if I hadn't taken a Poke-break for a few years.

Drunka will have to do a huge list like you Zero, if he doesn't want to miss the GBA

On Pokemon I'm the same I played R/B/Y then G/S/C but never was bothered about R/S/E or /D/P/P but I did play HG/SS then the first B/W but the not seconds, I played both X&Y along with OR/AS.

Speaking of Emerald, is that included in Pokémon R/S? If not, let's see what the people think! Grin Otherwise, erm, er, ah. :shrink:

Looks like the GBA will have the least the amount of games in, then.

Also abstain on Emerald as I was classing it with R/S.

Argh, forgot to respond to Zero's post! Duh! I feel like Emmy's different enough from RS to be treated differently, but not different enough to be a classic in its own right.

And I'm completely unsurprised to see the GBA having so few classics. An awkward middle child between classic consoles.

Just seems a little weird a system that sold over 80m SKU's has so few classics but then again most of the stand-out games are SNES games like LttP, Mario's, Final Fantasy VI etc.
