It might just be that I got used to the controls, but whilst I remember struggling at first, I wasn't by the end. As far as modes go, I sunk a hell of a lot of time into the 3ds one because it was so convenient. I was commuting for an extra hour a day, so I did every mode with every character pretty much. On the Wii U I'm setting up a console & TV for something that's only a little more in depth than the 3DS version, plus I've got all sorts of other, more immersive single player games I could be playing. If it was 10 years ago, Smash Wii U would've topped my list no questions asked, it just doesn't fit anywhere into my life with more money/less time.

Eh, that's fair. As a Nintendo-only gamer who's willing to put the time into Smash, I found the Wii U game better - if you've got less time, especially if you've got a commute, I can see why it would go the other way, for convenience's sake anyway.

On remasters we have to agree to disagree as I just went for I thought was the 10 best games be it a new or old and I reckon we do this again Twilight Princess is in my Top 10.
Great Number 1 in Splatoon (it got more votes), I didn't go for Kart mainly same reasons as SMASH as it's good but not favourite genres and better in the series.

If I were doing it on that basis, I'd probably have given the first place to MK8. It got fewer votes, but the people who liked it liked it more on average than Splatoon.
But I'm not, and I'm glad I'm not because having these two first places is possibly the best outcome.

But it was the most popular choice unless something like placed 10th in all 10 votes and got 10 points.

I disagree, but it's utterly academic because that's not being used as a criterion anyway. You wouldn't decide a drawn Premier League game on possession, and we're not deciding this on vote numbers. Two superb games came joint top, which is a brilliant outcome: that's all there is to it.

A little bit shocked at the joint outcome but both are really ace games so no real complaints here, top work on the thread as well Balla.

Balla should be elected Nintendo Pope for his inkredible (sorry, couldn't resist) work on this thread. Thanks for this - it must have been a lot of hard work.
And that result! I reckon we could all tell what the top three were going to be - Captain Toad was robbed, by the way - but not the order... and the joint first was a fine way to end it. I had trouble separating those two in my votes, to be honest. Can't wait for more resultage!

Not so sure I'd rank Splatoon that highly honestly. It's good, but it's also extremely barebones. The skeleton of a all-time great rather than a fully formed one. It's basically got Smash 3ds syndrome, very good game, but it needs a fair bit more meat on it. Can't comment on Kart as I've yet to get that one although if it's as fun as Wii with better gameplay and visuals it probably deserves its spot.

Every other game you voted for in Stage 2:
20 points: Hyrule Warriors (three votes) - "Hyrule Warriors was my first real plunge into Dynasty Warriors and it was a hell of a nice surprise. Fun story, decent combat and an absolutely amazing challenge mode. This game spent many happy hours in my disk slot." "I once said this was the best 7 ever which sounds bad as it's this high but it's not meant to be taken seriously or anything it's just a simple pure fun game where you can runaround as Zelda taking out wave after wave of enemies, which it does so well"
19 points: Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition (three votes) - "Madcap Metroid-like that ticks all the boxes, with the possible exception of length. Guacamelee! is another splash of fun on the eShop and a great advert for what is possible with 'mere' downloadable games. Highly recommended." "Who doesn’t love “La Mascara vs. Mega Hombre”? Who doesn’t hate the exploding piñatas? A game with heart, humour, and... hexploration. "
15 points: Child of Light (two votes) - "At the moment of this vote this is the best JRPG & maybe overall RPG on the system with excellent music, aesthetics, combat system" "To soar around through open air above a world, made with such care, with battle system well designed and lots of items you can find, while moving forwards the charming plot (too twee for some? For me, it’s not) made for a game I did adore. Upon my list, then, number four."
13 points: Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (two votes) - "Monster Hunter is a top series and this is the one I've loved the most. So many hours playing it and it's still a lot of fun to go and cut up a Lagiacrus. As much as I love 4, the magic happened here."
10 points: Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition (one first) - "In my three years as a Wii U owner nothing has topped this, a game I bought on day one. It's undoubtedly my Nintendo zealotry what's done it: the kind of game I was missing out on being a Wii owner for those busy six years, BACAE (pronounced 'baccy') made me feel more like the superhero in its title than any game before or since. The simple 'being Batman' as he hides in the shadows or glides around the starkly floodlit city is intoxicating (I'm sounding more like an EDGE reviewer as this goes on). Suffice to say that it is a treasured game and if Nintendo manage to better it in the remaining years of the Wii U's life (because who else will?), I will be a happy chappy."
Nine points: ZombiU (two votes) - "Took me a while to fall in love, but when I did I fell hard. Brilliant combat, fun twist on permadeath. Good."
Eight points: Lego City Undercover (three votes) - "GTA style open world meets LEGO with a humerus story starring Frank Honey what a character also it has made every LEGO gaem since seem a bit to simple." "Thoroughly enjoyable, completely different from the other Lego games and just so solid and gorgeous in every conceivable way. It’s probably one of the funniest games I’ve ever played too. On Wii U, it’s unmissable." "Time has made me look more fondly on this beast of a game, which boasts more collectable goodies than Rare's entire N64 output. The script is mostly cracking (there is a dull part in the middle) but it looks gorgeous, the voice acting is aces and it unfolds brilliantly. Ignore the worrisome loading times and a whale of a time can be had." Nintendo Land (three votes) - "Honestly I could include this on the basis of the Metroid game alone. Throwaway in single-player, great with willing friends." "The game that should have been Wii U's Wii Sports. Get a group together for Mario Chase and people's faces light up like Wii Tennis all over again. Lovely crisp graphics (that knitted Zelda!), fun games, all packed together in that smashing theme park setting. My heart was so full of dreams the day I plugged in my Wii U, sat through the Pikmin moving the stuff over and played a spot of Nintendoland. What a day!"
Seven points: The Wonderful 101 (two votes) - "Fun saturday morning cartoon characters, visuals and sounds tied to smashing combat mechanics unlike anything else. Long missions are broken into small chapters that can be stopped and started with ease, the story is fabulously bonkers and the mad superheroes have a wonderful Pokémon collection element. You've never played anything like this and, because everyone is stupid, we probably won't again. IDIOTS." "Platinums first Wii U game remains a great quirky experience"
Six points: Runbow - "I keep returning to the word 'joy' when describing this game, for that is the finest way to sum it up I have yet found. The insanely catchy music coupled with the easy-to-pick-up but hard-to-master gameplay mashed up with the biggest colour palette since Giant Michaelangelo's invasion of Colourton in 1932 (I don't know, it's late) and up to eight other people are all put into a bag and shaken up. Play it, even in single player."
Five points: New Super Mario Bros. U (two votes) - "At this stage we were all sick of 2D Mario games, I know. And the similarity to the Wii predecessor didn’t help (Grass world Desert world Water world Ice world Haunted/swamp world Mountain world Sky world Lava world; everybody join in). But it is still Mario; and shiny HD Mario to boot. That Luigi DLC took the piss though." "Why did this game revive the NSMB franchise for me? Probably a combination of more varied and interesting level design (world five stands out) and Miiverse support. Encouraging me to draw my experiences at the end of each level, while most of my friends list was doing likewise, did wonders for this game."
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - "An old-school platformer that’s as solid as DK’s abs, with a soundtrack to die for. David Wise, stand up – you’re a big reason that this game’s where it is in my list." Knytt Underground - "Some other f***er better have voted for this. [Erm.] This is a beautiful sprawling exploratory adventure (in fact it could be described as a 2D walking simulator, is it not for the mega-tough puzzle platforming). It features both dark humour and genuinely sad moments, a beautiful ambient soundtrack and the Nifflas trademark “big foreground things and silhouettes” art-style. It’s so frickin’ subversive and fourth-wall-breaking as well. I won’t spoil the ending for you… I’ll let the game do it instead."
Four points: Yoshi's Woolly World (two votes) - "It suffers when placed alongside the game it imitates, but it’s magnificently irresistible to look at and to play. Nice use of amiibo adds to it’s charm."
Spin the Bottle: Bumpie's Party - "While Game and Wario has a couple of great games for just a Gamepad, and Nintendoland had games for people who were used to gaming, spin the bottle is a party game in the truest sense of the word. No need to sit and stare at a TV, no need for previous gaming experience: just mad party games played with human beings and Wii Remotes. I've never laughed harder." Thomas Was Alone - "The platforming is a bit rubbish, the puzzles are rather simple but by the end you will care abut those shapes so much"
Three points: Devil's Third
Two points: Captain Toad Treasure Tracker (two votes) - "A nice little surprise. Nothing ground breaking, but after the Captain Toad levels in 3D World being so naff I was blown away but how much they could squeeze out of the formula. Really fun all the way through." "For making at least one amiibo useful. For being a charming puzzle game. For having surprising depth. For feeling like a 3D version of Nintendo's old single-screen games, like Donkey Kong and Wrecking Crew."
Need for Speed: Most Wanted U - "The speed, control, character and imagination make this the best in the Need for Speed series. This is a bloody brilliant game." Rodea the Sky Soldier
One point: Affordable Space Adventures - "Sticking a Nifflas story and a Knapnok control scheme together was a great idea. Definitely the best use of the game pad we have (and will get, probably.) Wonderful, grim sense of humour as well. Only its length stops it from being higher up my personal list." Game & Wario - "This game got absolutely lambasted on release for the crime of not being a Wario Ware game. It might not be that, but it is one of the most fun multiplayer experiences on the machine. If all you own is one gamepad, you cannot have more fun than gathering a few friends, pouring some booze and whacking on Islands, or Art. Phenomenal. Plus, Gamer is one of the best Wario Ware experiences out there."
My thoughts on the remaining votes:
HW coming up just short. Nobody (who voted for it) voted it lower than fifth, but nobody voted for it higher than fourth either. In the end, it didn't quite have enough fans to muscle in on the top ten - no top ten game had fewer than four votes for it. HW is still obviously a much-loved game though, among a select few anyway.
Interesting to see Guacamelee!, the eShop vote-topper, edged out by SK in these votes. But in twelfth and thirteenth place, there are, in my opinion, two of the eShop's other most solid offerings. I put them at three and four in my own votes, but they got overlooked by most in favour of some of the big retail games.
And then things get messy. Lots of good games, lots of them not quite good enough to make a lasting impact (and one angry protest vote for Knytt Underground, kudos to the staying power of the voter who's kept that futile flag flying throughout). The only game I'm really surprised to see ranking so low is Nintendo Land, but if you don't play much local multiplayer, you won't enjoy it really.
And DKCTF was robbed, again. Robbed by basically everything. Dat soundtrack though.
Five Stage 2 STAR COMMENTS:
Runbow - "I keep returning to the word 'joy' when describing this game, for that is the finest way to sum it up I have yet found.
The Wonderful 101 - "Fun saturday morning cartoon characters, visuals and sounds tied to smashing combat mechanics unlike anything else. Long missions are broken into small chapters that can be stopped and started with ease, the story is fabulously bonkers and the mad superheroes have a wonderful Pokémon collection element. You've never played anything like this and, because everyone is stupid, we probably won't again. IDIOTS."
Shovel Knight - "SK SHOVEL KNIGHT! HE'S THE LEADER OF THE BUNCH, YOU KNOW HIM WELL HE'LL BURY YOU WITH HIS SHOVEL & SHOOT SOME SPELLS HE DOES IT FOR SHOVERLY, HE'S NO MARAUDER HE'S ON A MISSION TO DEFEAT THE ORDER OF NO QUARTER
SK SHOVEL KNIGHT IS CLASS!"
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U - "Where else can I beat seven shades of shit out of those fire emblem characters? Shame there's no fatalities though."
Splatoon - "Into a genre obsessed with kill streaks and headshots strides Splatoon, with its obsession with spill streaks and headsplats. Paintball may not excite hardcore shooterists but slap on the genius idea of allowing your characters to speed through the ink it's just sprayed ranks as one of Nintendo's most simple-yet-genius idea since the ability to turn Link into a painting in A Link Between Worlds. Fab stuff."

Gutted for Hyrule Warriors knowing that bloody Mario Maker placed. That game is a pure joy to play! If you've not played it, regardless of your thoughts on DW, you should check it out. It's also another display of Nintendo DLC done amazingly.

Let's polish this thing off.
Honourable Mentions:
Darksiders II - "A brilliant Zelda stop gap, with some really neat dungeon ideas, let down by the fact it was as stable as Oliver Reed carrying a tea-tray full off ball bearings."
Donkey Kong Country Returns: Tropical Freeze - "Sort of forgotten, but it was so much more fun to play than the Wii version with it’s shake-to-roll bullshit." [I'll post more music videos if I have to, don't make me!]
E3 2014 – "By all accounts, Nintendo “won” last year’s E3. MK8 DLC, SSBU, Splatoon, XCX, Zelda, a teaser of Starfox... It got people more excited about the Wii U than almost anything before. The Robot Chicken skits were good too."
Guacamelee!! Super Turbo Championship Edition - "Just missed out. It’s like a coherent Subspace Emissary."
Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush – "While it’s obviously been designed as a novelty for the GamePad, there’s a game attached that has enough style and substance to stand soundly on it’s own merits."
Lego City Undercover - "The actual gameplay of the Lego games does fizzle out after a while, but there were so may laughs and secrets in this."
Mario Kart 8, Super Mario Bros U, Super Smash Bros for Wii U - "All good games, none have hooked me enough to be rated highly" [ ]
Miiverse – "I mentioned it in Zero’s vote, and I’ll mention it again here. I love drawing my thoughts about games and seeing other people’s artwork. Good Miiverse implementation can make a game – it raised NSMBU beyond being “just another New Super Mario Bros. game”, and it’s the only plausible reason for Game & Wario not having been deleted from existence."
Satoru Iwata – "How can I not mention this bloke? Was he the driving force behind the Wii U? Probably. Did he bring its games to hilarious life in his Nintendo Directs? Definitely."
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed – "It’s easy to overlook the technical flaws as it’s such good fun. Preceeded by Mario Kart 8 in very thinkable way though."
Sonic Lost World – "Not all of it’s pieces fit, but I still call this the most underrated game on the Wii U."
Splatoon – "Seems excellent fun, but I’ve never taken it online. I’ve missed out, so this misses out on my top ten."
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U - "Still prefer the 3DS version. I will be in the minority."
Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Wii U Edition – "The best ‘pure’ beat-‘em-up on a Nintendo console since the SNES days. Densely packed and so finely tuned."
The Legend Of Zelda: Wind Waker HD - "Loved it back in the day but have grown impatient with it since then. Nonetheless a beautiful thing."
The Wii U – "I’ve thoroughly enjoyed off-TV play, Nintendo finally got online right, and games like Mario Kart 8 are as great as anything I’ve seen on other consoles. Plus, Miiverse. Even if it is Nintendo’s worst home console, it’s still a fine piece of kit with some fine games."
And then a couple I just didn't have the willpower to untangle due to their layouts, so with apologies to those involved:
"Splinter Cell Blacklist, Zombi U, Batman Arkham city, Captain Toad Treasure tracker, Mario 3d World, Donkey Kong TF, Year walk, scram kitty, Runbow & affordable space adventures."
"The games that didn't make the cut are Most Wanted U one of the best ports over to the Wii U , Smash for U which is good but reason it didn't make the Top 10 is due to Melee still being better IMO, Super Mario 3D World again a fine game but being not quite a proper 3D Mario let's it down, Super Mario Maker I'm not the most creative and it's fun to play peoples levels but its not the same as playing a proper 2D platformer and Wii U has one of the best in Rayman Legends, Mario Kart 8 a fun game and looks fantastic but its missing that je ne sais quoi Kart 64 & Double Dash have, Scribblenauts Unlimited fantastic use of the gamepad maybe one of the best but the game is missing any sort of oomph that t would be a long way behind Kart 8 in top picks, there is of course more as I started with 30 games but not going to list them all"
Dishonourable Mentions:
Animal Crossing amiibo Festival – "Irredeemably dull. Bored Game."
E3 2015 – "Badly put together, and most of the big surprises were for 3DS anyway. It couldn’t have said “winding down” more clearly if there had been another interminable Mario Maker segment spelling out “WINDING DOWN” in coins."
Game & Wario – "Massively disappointing, and an early tell-tale sign that nobody – not even Nintendo – really knew what they were doing with the Wii U and it’s GamePad."
The gamepad – "I’ve thoroughly enjoyed off-TV play, and having a map on the touch-screen is always handy; yet the list of games that make substantial and rewarding use of the gamepad is very slim. After the launch period, Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush and Super Mario Maker are the only ones that spring to mind. There’s no point in innovation for innovation’s sake, and if Nintendo don’t have any golden ideas for the NX (hybridisation is not one such), I’d rather see them trying the power route instead. Much though it pains me to say it."
Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games – "This arguably could have been the best Mario & Sonic Olympics game to date, but it’s a confused mess, and full of cheap and nasty recycling of previous assets right the way through. It’s genuinely made worse by the rubbish GamePad implementation too."
Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash – "It’s not a bad game, by any means, but the enjoyment provided is limited."
Most third-party triple-A developers – "“We released a shoddy port on your console, it didn’t sell, so we’re going to stop supporting it.” Triple-A logic. "
Nintendo’s marketing team – "Is it a new console? An expansion for the Wii? Who knows? Who cares, we’re not advertising it anyway. Great job, guys."
Rodea the Sky Soldier – "An alright-ish Wii game, bludgeoned to death."
Star Fox 0 - "For being a massive waste of Miyamoto's & PlatinumGames' time."
The stylus - "Whose placement is absolutely terrible and makes you wonder if anybody actually bothered to use it during testing. Did nobody think "well placing it under ones fingers allows for immediate and easy grabbing, whereas sticking it at the top makes it cumbersome to grab for basically every user, so we should stick it on the side like the DS"? Clearly not."
Super Mario Maker - "I still don't know why I bought this. What a fool I was to get suckered in by the promise of Mario." [No prizes for guessing the identity of this voter...]
Trine 2 - "Dull; badly acted; potentially beautiful, but actually messy from the point of being a videogame."
The Virtual Console – "As has been much repeated, the XBox One now has more N64 games on it than the Wii U."
My thoughts on the honourables and dishonourables:
I did a bad job of explaining this. I was hoping that people would discuss other bits of Wii U culture that couldn't factor into Best Game and Worst Game votes. Instead there were a lot of also-rans from Stage 2 and the Cr@p Games award. I said as much in-thread, but the post probably got lost in all the other discussion. Sorry for not being clearer.
We got some good quality wordage nonetheless, with the dishonourables being of their traditional high quality. I'm going to give STAR COMMENTS to the stylus one, for getting at what I meant despite my lack of clarity; and the ACaF one, for being a terrible pun. Which is appropriate for a terrible game.
The last gasp:
Balladeer's Half-Baked Half-Arsed Voter Awards
The Animal Crossing's Katrina Award for Spookiest Prediction Perhaps it was a bit obvious, but congrats to JayMoyles for his powers of foresight in predicting our final six! Nobody could have predicted that ending, though. I had to recount the points several times.
The Grand Star Award for Most Star Comments You may have noticed I've been awarding these to my favourite comments, and now they have a purpose! Of sorts. And it's another tie, with Jimbob and ZeroJones splitting this award on four STAR COMMENTS each! Congratulations too to Drunka, Athrun, Jas, Cappa, and Andy, each of whom got at least one. That's not including the myriads of other great comments received. Thanks for making the votes fun to read through, all: we love our "words everywhere", don't we?
The Boulder Badge Award for Most Participatory Newbie DL would have voted but he doesn't have a Wii U. GJones would have voted but he doesn't have a Wii U any more. OrangeRakoon shows 'em how it's done! We've had some great new people joining the forum this year, and I'm very pleased that at least one of them got involved in this voting thread.
The Furious Jozan Award for Most Negative Comments It's only fitting that The Cappuccino Kid, founder of the Cr@p Games Reviews thread, should make this award. Not only did he submit a full roster of bad games for that vote, genuinely bad ones rather than vaguely disappointing: he also had a separate five dishonourable mentions for Stage 2. Congratulations Cappa: let the hate flow through you.
The Gold Rupee Special Thanks Awards For all of those who voted in every category. Many thanks to masofdas, Drunkalilly, Jimbob, ZeroJones, and Crumpy Andy! You're the kind of forumites who make a chap want to run more voting threads in future.
The Piece of Heart Above and Beyond the Call of Duty Awards For those who not only voted in every category, but gave me five/ten votes for each, and a comment for each of those! Congratulations once more to Jimbob and ZeroJones! You're the kind of forumites who make a chap want to put the extra effort into a voting thread! (Tip of the hat to Drunka, who only missed out because he hadn't played enough bad games.)
And Finally, a Handshake from the Host I couldn't let this section go by without calling JayMoyles back up onto the podium. The man doesn't even have a Wii U, yet he's been there from page one, submitted a couple of votes, and has commented regularly. Jay, I'd shake your hand, but we're on the Internet, so...
Stick a fork in it, this vote's done.

Have you only played Splatoon in single player? As many said it was barebones when it launched (which it was in a MP sense) but with all they added to it since then it's anything but barebones now, I voted it top because not only is it the most fun I've had with a game this year it's the most fun I've had on the wii U.

Aw cheers DL! And thanks to everyone else who's commented on the vote, but it especially means a lot from somebody who didn't/couldn't contribute.

Thinking about it bare-bones may not be the right word for it, restrictive might be a closer match. Needlessly so. I get what they were going for with the online mode, with the rotation of things and so on, but it just feels more restrictive than, say, Mario Kart Wii did.
It's good, no doubt about that, but I think it's another game and a bunch of refinements short of being the game it could be.

Thanks for your kind words in the final words though Balla, but more importantly, thanks once again for another great vote thread! Voting threads are always a highlight of GNamer for me, and yours was fantastic as always!

As much as the rotation bugged me sometimes I don't think I'd like them to deliver the maps/modes in the standard way as you'd not only lose that surprise of what will you be playing today but also & more importantly it splits up the player base as more folk would stick to ranked matches only etc.
So currently the only thing I'd like them to change is add more than 2 maps at time into the rotation.
