ARMSI prefer fighting on a 2D plane to 3D arena fighters, but this was good stuff. The focus on zoning and positioning meant that it wasn't exactly well balanced - playing heavies was a miserable experience in this whereas closing the gap as Zangief in SF was simple enough - but taking down fools with Ribbon Girl was great fun. I'd like to see the idea refined with a sequel or a substantial update in future.
BayonettaCan't believe this passed me by back at its original release. Fluid combat, one of the most satisfying dodges in all of video gaming and a cracking protagonist in Bayo herself. I've still got the sequel to play too!
Blaster Master ZeroI never played the original, but this was a cool little retro-styled action title. The bits in the tank were the highlights as they incorporated some Metroidvania stylings along with some pretty fun boss battles. The on foot sections were a little dull, all told, as each encounter was trivialised by the time you had the strongest weapon. It wasn't a difficult title and it didn't do anything radically different to leave a strong impression, but it's worth a punt.
CelesteI'm not as fervent a fan of this as some of you on the forum, but it's still the best 2D platformer I've played on Switch. That dash ability is a thing of beauty and makes the act of moving through each level an absolute treat. That would be enough to make this worthy of your time by itself, but the heartwarming and compelling story and the banging soundtrack turn the whole experience into something magical. Get it played.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2This will appeal to like two of you, maybe, but I had fun with this. I'm not usually that big on 3D arena fighters, but there was something engaging about creating my own original character (do NOT steal) and having them scrap with Goku and pals. I've no desire to play a sequel as this really isn't a game with depth, but it's a decent time for Dragon Ball fans.
Fatal FuryI played this through the NEO GEO Classics selection on Switch. It's fine - it suffers greatly from what I'd call "arcade bullshit" with attacks taking huge chunks out of your life bar in a bid to steal money from you. Thankfully, you can just chuck credits into the game before starting your run, but that didn't stop it from being frustrating.
Fast RMXI was shite at this, therefore I didn't have the most fun. Unlike some of our forumites though, I won't let my failure to get good at a game colour my overall opinion of the title.
There's a solid racer in here and I think that I would have spent the time to learn how to race properly had MK8D not dropped so close to it.
Fire Emblem WarriorsIt's a Warriors game - mindless fun charging down hordes of mooks. I think they did a great job of incorporating some of FE's mechanics into the gameplay - the weapon triangle means you need to be careful about which character you take into battle and the team up mechanic introduces a wee bit of strategy into the destruction of hundreds of soldiers. I wish they picked more than just
Awakening,
Fates and Marth for the game, but that's what Fire Emblem is to many people in this day and age, sadly.
Hollow KnightIncredible. It's 2D
Dark Souls with creepy crawlies and it oozes with atmosphere. I'm incredibly excited to play more when
Silksong releases. If you're looking for a Metroidvania on Switch, this should be your first port of call.
I Am SetsunaThe snowy landscapes and piano-laden soundtrack were lovely and all, but the game itself wasn't particularly engaging. Forgettable characters, an even more forgettable story and a battle system that I'd struggle to call engaging. I picked this up to get an RPG on my Switch in the early days of the machine, but there's no point going for this two years into the console's lifespan.
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom BattleReally good fun, which was a surprise considering the air of scepticism that surrounding the game when rumours of its existence started to crop up. I think I've got one world left to beat on it from what I remember. Solid strategy with some pretty funny moments courtesy of the Rabbids wrapped up with the magic of Mario. Well worth a go.
Mario Kart 8 DeluxeThe best that Mario Kart has ever been. You can't go wrong with this and it's a worthy addition to any Switch library.
Mario Tennis AcesI enjoyed this a lot! It plays a cracking game of tennis when you're up against an evenly matched opponent. There's something properly exhilirating in trying to outwit your opponent through special shots and more. Sadly, I didn't experience that too much in my time playing the game as it was spent either playing through the meagre single player offering or destroying Andy online. Still, good stuff here.
Monster Hunter Generations UltimateYeah, probably should get back to this at some point! I think playing through the same game for a third time was a bit of a big ask, but it's still the best Monster Hunter game not called
World and arguably better in some areas too. You won't be lacking for content with this - it's bloody massive.
Neon ChromeI reviewed this for Gintendo - it's alright. Roguelites are ten-a-penny on the eShop now and I say you're better going for something like
Enter the Gungeon or
The Binding of Isaac over this - they'll do more interesting things and be more visually interesting than the cyberpunk aesthetic
Neon Chrome relied on.
Octopath TravelerSolid JRPG. The core gimmick of having eight protagonists wasn't utilised as effectively as I'd hoped and resulted in the stories being told feeling detached and even a bit unimportant at points. Still, the OST was 2018's best in my eyes, the battling grew to be pretty damn engaging in the later stages of the game and I'd say that I can recommend this without much hassle. Just, don't bother with the endgame nonsense.
Pocket FighterThis is okay - if you regularly play with mates locally, this would be a great addition to your line-up of local multiplayer games. It's simple enough to pick up relying on only two attack buttons to fight, which means you don't need to spend hours in training mode learning combos as you do in other fighters. Instead, the focus lies on positioning and movement, so it's not a button bashers dream but at the same stretch a good player won't utterly destroy newbies. Still, there isn't a lot of meat to this and the online was a bit shonky when I last touched it, so I'd only pick this up if you've got the mates to make it worth it.
Rocket LeagueAgain, I'm pretty shite at this and found myself carried by some of the more seasoned RL players on the forum. I still had fun - football with cars is a premise that'd be hard to mess up, but the RL lads nailed it nonetheless. I wish I was good enough to fly through the air and pull off crazy moves as I can imagine how satisfying that must feel, but until then, I've always got the madcap fun of the power-up mode to tide my noob arse over.
RunbowI didn't get on with this in single player. I found the colour changing gimmick to be fun for the first few levels, but I didn't think it had legs to fuel a whole campaign. Naturally, this shines brightest in multiplayer, but I can't recommend it if you've nobody to play with.
Shovel Knight: Treasure TroveLike Drunka, I've only finished Shovel Knight's campaign, although I have dipped my toes into the other two currently released campaigns. Shovel Knight's campaign is just brilliant fun and well worth the price of admission by itself. Plague Knight is a little bit unwieldy as he's so different from the other two currently playable characters and I don't think his method of traversing each level feels intuitive. Spectre Knight is great fun though and one that I really should return to. It's basically like playing
Ninja Gaiden, which is no bad thing. Get it played.
SnipperclipsI played a bit of this with a mate close to launch - it's fun! Naturally, both times that I played this devolved into dicking each other over by hacking chunks out of our characters meaning the puzzles became impossible to solve, but that's all part of the fun. Cutesy visuals and some nice tunes from a developer I've been following since their very first Flash cartoons and games back on Newgrounds - top stuff. I ought to go back to this.
Splatoon 2My first foray into the world of Splatoon! The multiplayer battles I took part in were decent enough, but it's not something I think I could spend hours upon hours playing like some fans of the game. What I really should do is go back and polish off the single player - that was a surprisingly solid campaign from what I played. I'd imagine that the DLC is of a similar calibre, if not even better.
Super Mario OdysseyUtter banger. I went back and watched that E3 trailer with Jump Up Superstar playing recently - I remember feeling so excited to play this one. You just knew it was going to kick ass and take names, and that's exactly what it did. Get it played.
Super Smash Bros. UltimateI've already put 160 hours into this and I'm not stopping anytime soon. Earlier on, I said that MK8D is the best that Mario Kart has ever been. The same applies with SSBU and Smash. Get it played.
Tetris 99[andyman]I am shite at Tetris, therefore this is shite.[/andyman]
The Binding of Isaac: AfterbirthNot played nearly enough of this, but it's my go-to recommendation for anybody looking to dive into a roguelite game. Get past its grim but unique aesthetic and there's a quality dungeon crawler in there. I spent hundreds of hours of my time on this back on PC, so I'm sure it's got similar legs on Switch.
The Jackbox Party PacksRolling these all up into one - like Drunka mentioned in his write-up, the amount of fun you'll get out of this depends on your friends and family. I've been fortunate enough to have the GNamer Meetup to bring this to along with my family to be game for a few rounds, so it's been worth it for me. YMMV, natch.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the WildMasterpiece. I want to go back and collect all the Korok Seeds and spend hours upon hours exploring this world again. I wish I could explore it fresh again and it's almost a little bit sad that I can't. I've said enough on this elsewhere - it's genuinely incredible stuff.
The World Ends With You: Final RemixOkay, so I still absolutely love most things about this. I like the characters, I think the art style still comes across as being somewhat unique and the music is still incredible. There's some interesting ideas that I haven't seen any RPGs attempt to replicate in the 10 years or so since the game originally released on DS, like lowering your level and HP to increase the chance of loot.
But... this isn't the version you should play. The battling - which is the most important part of the game in my opinion - is hamstrung on Switch compared to DS. The Switch's touchscreen doesn't feel responsive enough compared to the DS and as a result, even with stylus in hand, the battling just isn't as satisfying. I've heard the motion controls aren't any better, too. Coupled with the removal of the wonderfully unique dual screen battling and it all just feels a bit flat. I love the DS version... I can't honestly recommend the Switch edition.
WargrooveI wrote a little review of this in the Finished Games thread, but basically this is cracking strategy title full of things to do, but be wary as it's pretty damn tough. Still, it's satisfying to power through an hour long battle to victory.
