Well this looks tremendous. Releasing 8th October and it'll be the first new 2D Metroid I buy on launch. Can't wait.

As someone that hasn't been much of a Metroid fan, this looked wonderful and I want the amiibo.

Don't want to be controversial, but my absolute 100% won't regret saying this later hyper educated based on nothing thoughts say: this is going to be better than Metroid Prime 4 turns out to be. Can't wait for this.
Also neat as this was a title that people batted around the internet as some kind of cancelled project, almost an urban legend. It does sound made up - "Nintendo were making a game called Metroid Dread, and also Mario Destiny, and also Pokemon Death Edition". But here we are!

I absolutely hooted when they revealed the title, as Buska (stuck 20 seconds behind me) can testify!

Absolutely - it's been a rumour for so long.
I am beyond excited for this. It looks like a brilliant mashup of Fusion and Samus Returns, and while my immediate reaction was "I wonder how they'll make robots as creepy and aggro as aliens" I immediately realised just how they can do that. Cannae wait!

Guess I'm taking a stroll to the game shop to pick up Zero Mission, Fusion and Samus Returns this weekend . . .

Times like this, why I'd like to see a improved retro selection on Switch, then again I'd likely Metroid myself out by time Dread comes.

This’ll surely be the Metroid game that I give a chance. Because of my prolific bargain-hunting I’ve managed to get all the Metroid games up to this point in some form or fashion, but apart from Metroid Pinball (!) I don’t think I’ve spent any longer than an hour with any of them – including the really, really good ones.
I wasn’t wanting a new Metroid game from yesterday’s Direct, but I was wanting to play either Fusion, Zero Mission or Samus Returns at some point later this year. I might park that for now, buy into Dread’s hype and make this the first Metroid that I truly commit myself to.

I did see that Eurogamer and Nintendo Life both went "10TH OF AUGUST??!!" and then realised they'd misinterpreted the stupid American dating system. If only.

Yeh if Nintendo had done that then surely that would have been the ender for the direct.

I'd say that it should still have been, but I think we tend to massively overestimate how much the wider world cares about Metroid.

Yeah, Metroid isn't a big series in terms of what even matters to Nintendo salezzz. However, I wouldn't be surprised if this ends up be like the best-selling Metroid because it's on Switch.
So have I

Well going through the eShop sale (that was pain) there's Adventure of Chris available, maybe that's a best seller.
But no I've preordered the game, only standard version of it though.

Oh no! Had a quick look at that - is it ironically good, or just crap? Unless it's a scathing commentary, it seems a bit of a mess.

Incredibly up for this. It's great to see the lads behind Samus Returns are being trusted to keep the 2D Metroid train going as they did a great job with the previous game. I'm not expecting any revolutionary leaps ahead of Samus Returns, but I think they nailed how that game felt to play and it was really only the design of the original Game Boy game holding the game back at all. A Metroid that doesn't have to build upon 25 year old design from a limited handheld console is going to be a special one indeed.
And that name!

The only slight thing I'm concerned about from the MercurySteam pedigree is that it doesn't feel a bit too action-y. Lots of punching robots in the face and that. Both of their previous Metroidvanias (one of each in fact!) that I've played felt a bit in that vein, whereas I want my Metroids to be mostly about me having to keep my distance from gribbly creatures.

I don't know much about Metroid but couldn't it be that Samus has been a bounty hunter longer, got better gear etc that she is more action then the first game.

The parry mechanic definitely means that battling mooks feels more action-y as you put it, but I think the big ol' robot fella will lean into having to keep your distance and I do recall the Metroid enemies being more about dodging and choosing your shots in Samus Returns.
