| Yeah, I agree. It's not like a conventional boxing game like the Fight Night games on Xbox or even Wii Sports boxing. |

| Thanks to the seven non-me people who have voted so far, stretching my Excel spreadsheet to breaking point. Fun fact: the RPG week is the only week so far where there have been more people voting than games voted for. For a given value of "fun". (The racing week had equal numbers.) |

| Aaarrrgh. Had I known Resident Evil 4 was in the shooters (somehow picked up that it was going in adventure games) and remembered that I'd played Sin & Punishment 2, my vote would have doubled in size! Sports, is it? I'll see what I can do... |

| Quite surprisingly, I found eight games that fit the sports and minigames category in my collection (or previously in it). Granted, three of them were football games and two were Wii Sports and Resort, but still... |

| I struggled to narrow it down to a top ten, let alone a top five. I had to leave out some absolute belters. Hardest category yet, in my opinion. |

| For me I'm jus struggling to remember what there is. Without the comfort of my collection I'll have to go with my half filled backloggery and I'm worried I'll forget an absolute belter. Really should update my backloggery... |

| For three of the four categories thus far, I've simply had to look at my collection. I have no idea how, but I've wound up with over ninety Wii games. |

I was amazed to discover that I have over fifty of the things, but goodness me! Plus a few more I've bought since that photo was taken a month ago, like Sonic & The Secret Rings and Rockstar Table Tennis. EDIT: I've also got a handful out of those shots and a few unboxed games, like Red Steel 2 and the legendary Cooking Mama. If it's not exactly ninety, it's close. |

| Blimey, this really is a tough category. Going to have to do some shelf checking like Phillips (and if it's possible a flick through old NGamer issues) to jog my memory.
Thing is, I (Criminally) haven't played enough of this genre on Wii to be able to make the best of decisions but it *is* a combined vote so I might as well!
(and yes, I still need to play Let's Tap...) |

| Here's a bit of a controversial question, is Red Steel 2 a shooter? I mean you have a gun, but it's very much a swordplay game, I'd be more tempted to put it in adveture. |

| I got votes for RS2 in the shooters week, and given the original game, I did indeed count it as a shooter.
Two days to go, ish. The total number of games voted for goes up every week. |

| Yeah, I've only just gotten around to playing it and I just wondered, it's a fantastic game but it's just not a shooter so I still wouldn't have rated it as a shooter. |

| Voting over for week 4! Another 13 votes this week. Thanks to everyone who voted! Without further ado: Fifth place:- Spoiler:
Mario Party 9Points: 12 First places: 0 You say: "...a great game, slightly better than 8 in my opinion, though none of them match up to 4. Had great mini-games and was a blast with friends. Its Mario party, what more is there to say?" "We've seen it a billion (well, eight) times before, but this was a solid rehash of the Mario Party formula. In my experience, the bonus modes were more fun (and more immediate) than the main game in multiplayer, but overall not a bad effort." I say: My fourth place. I didn't buy 8 after NGamer trashed it, but the minigames in 9 were very satisfactory. Not sure about the car mechanic, but blah blah innovation blah blah differences to the formula blah. It's interesting to note that nobody voted for 8 and 9 in the same list; if we look at franchises where this happened, Mario Party comes fourth by one point! (None of the other ranks change. Sorry Pro Evo.) But on games alone, it loses out to... Fourth place:- Spoiler:
Mario Strikers ChargedPoints: 18 First places: 1 You say: "I was genuinely enamoured with this game for some time. This was actually the first game I ever played online, and I really found myself wrapped up with it. That trick of teleporting into the goal with Dry Bones never got old. A fantastic and often overlooked title this." "The best game of football money can buy. Great customisation of teams and a really challenging game." I say: I stayed away from this one, because it didn't look like it had the charm of Camelot's sports titles. Sounds like the online made up for that for most of you! Although see "Dishonourable Mentions" below for the backlash... Third place:- Spoiler:
Wario Ware Smooth MovesPoints: 25 First places: 3 You say: "There may not have been Wobbly Bobbly or the Dance-Off, but there's still enough crazy shtüff to make this an excellent set of minigames." "Simply fun. If only there'd been a simultaneous multiplayer..." I say: My first place! No I'm not a great fan of sports. This may not have had the pixel-perfect-ness of Touched, say, but for sheer fun-ness, you can't beat Wario Ware. Plus I enjoyed the pass-the-remote multiplayer with my family, although I agree that a simultaneous mode would have been nice. Second place:- Spoiler:
Wii Sports ResortPoints: 34 First places: 2 You say: "Arguably a better game than it’s prequel, though I didn’t get even a millionth of the multiplayer fun out of it. Nonetheless, a great demonstration of the brilliant MotionPlus upgrade and and an even better example of ‘that Nintendo magic’." "technically better than the above wii sports but a but the initial wii buzz & died a bit when this had arrived." "If the Wii had launched with this game (and WiiMotion+), it would probably have been a vastly different console in ways we can't know. As it stands, though, it offers a pleasingly-presented set of sporting minigames in a likeable location. Personally, as with its older brother: this is merely a tech demo done right for another Wii peripheral. I did enjoy the bowling, however. Why Nintendo never applied their magic touch to a proper bowling game, I will never know. This game gets my top slot because there's a lot here to like if this is your sort of thing." I say: My second place! Technically better and with more variety than its sibling, it did suffer from coming out later; but was excellent multiplayer all the same. My personal favourites were sword-fighting and ping pong: basketball can push off. Our Wiikly Winner:- Spoiler:
Wii SportsPoints: 37 First places: 3 You say: (Gets another spoiler because I include all comments about the first place game, and you said so much!) - Spoiler:
"Represents the happiest days of my gaming life. I’ll forever link this with good friends and good laughs. I adore everything about Wii Sports; it’s an absolute classic and for me is the most important game of the millennium so far." "I've great memories of playing this with family & friends seems like everyone had it at the time." "We've all played it, demo'd the motion thing quite well that is until You figure out how to spam strikes 9/10 times.." "Everyone's first Wii game. I remember waking up on Christmas morning of 2006 and playing Wii Sports tennis and bowling for hours before tucking into Twilight Princess. A veritable Wii classic." "The appeal waned over time but Wii Sports gathered my family around the TV like no other game has managed." "I'll never forget the first time I booted my Wii up and connected a Remote swing with a virtual tennis ball; I also won't forget the fun games of bowling had in multiplayer." "There was one, sole sport, that MADE the original game. This sport is Golf. You may laugh, I too never watch any real life golf. I laugh as McIllroy flounders at Vodafone advertising. However, nothing can beat the simplicity of the original controls, the design of the original courses, the red wobbly bar that voices its displeasure as you let out a primal roar while swinging with all your might..." "Because it started it all off." I say: In the most obvious outcome since the racing week, my third place takes the crown with an incredible 37 points. Out of the thirteen votes I got, only two didn't include this game, and one of those was because the voter felt it was outclassed by its sequel. And it was, really, wasn't it? But the sequel didn't have the same impact: this was not just a launch game, it was the launch game, the first true demonstration of what the Wii could do (and what it couldn't at the time). So many hours of multiplayer fun came from this, not only at home but in pubs, offices and squares in London, that even if it was bettered later, it seems churlish to give it anything but first place. Honourable Mentions: - Spoiler:
Go Vacation, Grand Slam Tennis, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games/Olympic Winter Games/London 2012 Olympic Games, Mario Party 8, NBA Jam, Pro Evolution Soccer 2008/09/13, Rayman Raving Rabbids, Rayman Raving Rabbids: TV Party, SSX Blur, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08/10, Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam, Wii Fit, Wii Play (my fifth place) Dishonourable Mentions: - Spoiler:
- Game Party: "I still remember the moment I unwrapped it and the horror I had felt. My parents had gone off list and bought this travesty so I had to try it. Worst. Game. Ever."
- Inazuma Eleven Strikers: "Strips away the beautiful story elements from the handheld games and changes the football mechanics to arse. Shame."
- Mario Strikers Charged: "People complain that there are no good games coming out on Wii U. I’d rather have nothing than what we got in spring/summer 2007 on Wii, namely this. Mince."
"Not so much a difficulty curve as a difficulty step function. MSCF has caused more gamer rage in me than any other game." "okay so I couldn't wait for this game to launch When it was announced I played the gamecube version more than fifa street And was looking forward to playing online. That was until I finally played online and got beaten by a multitude of 13 year old German girls. I realised I sucked and trade it. damn you Germany."
- Pacman Party: "for its luck based and shite minigames."
- Top Spin 3: "How difficult is it to get a tennis game right on Wii? I bought this for £3 back in the day and traded it in the following morning for a £2.25 loss."
- Wario Ware Smooth Moves: "The most disappointing of the WarioWare games. WarioWare Touched was a huge step down from WarioWare Twisted, but at least it had accurate controls to work with. A franchise as frantic and fast as WarioWare needs to a) have a solid, simple control scheme and b) be a respectable showcase for its host hardware's capabilities. Smooth Moves had/was neither, and even its sense of humour couldn't save it."
- Wii Play: "We only bought it for the extra remote, right team?"
- Wii Sports: "...this is a dull, dull minigame compilation hampered by imprecise (and restrictive) waggle controls that would sadly plague the Wii before and even after the launch of WiiMotion+. This game isn't as good as everyone remembers it, and it wasn't really up to much back then. Bettered by its Resort sequel."
- Wii Sports Resort: "Wiimote plus, it is true, you are a great success. Yet you ruined one thing with your antics. The sport of Wii Golf!
Yeah, the twisting to add 'spin' was not a good addition in Wii sports resort, at least for Golf."
Thanks again to all our voters! And thanks to all those who sent dishonourable mentions: I had a good laugh at some of them. Discuss, complain, and vote in Week 5! The genre is beat-em-ups and fighting games, and deadline is 6 p.m. 14th April. Punch Out! and wrestling games are in; Wii Sports boxing is out.

| Who said Wii Sports was dull? You sad bastard.
Never got round to buying Mario Party 9, Strikers Charged received a dishonourable mention and WarioWare shall be receiving my vote in another category. No arguments about the top two though. Good work! |

Fighting games... This may be a meagre week for me. |
