| I've no idea how I keep forgetting about some games, Donkey Kong and Rayman (played it on PS3 but same thing) that I forgot this time.
@andyman A Shadow's Tale was in my first draft but Wario Land just edged past it. |

| I've got the Wii on just now, and have stuck on my #1 vote for this week's category for the first time in a couple of years. What a great game. |

| Best possible response from this thread! Next to someone being inspired to pick up an old classic for the first time, I suppose. buyS&P2todayNow for something a little less popular: arbitrations. WWSM is confirmed out. Sorry Phillips: it placed well in week 4, and hasn't received much support as a puzzler. Unless it receives a sudden wave in the last few days... As for Bomberman Blast, I've never played it; but seeing as it hasn't received a single mention in votes so far, I'm tempted to give it a chance for glory as an "other". Anyone else played it, and like to weigh in? |

| WarioWare: I've supported it, I've argued my case, so why shouldn't it be counted? I want it included. I didn't want an RPG section, but considered it in my original draft over on NGamer as I knew others would. This, to me, is the same thing.
It's plausible that people haven't voted for Bomberman as they think there are better games to choose from. I do. As I've argued, I don't get this 'Other' category you've plonked in - there is no such thing as a genreless game, and everything I can think of on Wii - Bonsai Barber aside - fits into my original thread idea.

| There are games that don't fit neatly into other categories though. "Other" is less for "genreless" games, as for those games that don't fit too well into any of the existing genre "buckets". I wouldn't say that Animal Crossing is a strategy game for example, but it definitely doesn't fit in anywhere else! I'm happy to take the thread's collective opinion on WWSM, but if one person saying "I want it included" is a valid argument then Andyman should have been able to put the Monkey Balls in puzzle. And I can't say I get the comparison with an entire, popularly supported genre. Ediit: I do have counterarguments to your claim, but I'm currently enjoying a wedding (not my own) and this is getting too serious anyway. If you really want WWSM in, I disagree with you, but I can do that. |

| The only people online either don't vote or have voted, so I reckon it's okay to post this. Puzzle week is over - 11 votes (12 if we count Vidofnir's abstention), despite the entry of a new voter into the ranks (thanks new voter! Now post some more please ); but it is a strange genre, where WiiWare rules supreme. Or does it? Fifth place:- Spoiler:
Sam & Max Season 1 (a.k.a. Sam & Max Save the World)Points: 12 First places: 1 You say: "actually properly funny, and not unplayable like the sequel. Also, LucasArts " "...the script really catapults this forward with some great characters, just a shame it was such a shoddy port." I say: It does look nice! And that's really all I have to say about it: despite being a fan of other point-and-clicks, this one flew straight under my radar. Fourth place:- Spoiler:
Boom BloxPoints: 14 First places: 1 You say: "Well, this was a surprise. EA and Spielberg gave us a meticulously crafted, smart, sweet puzzle game featuring a bunch of adorable domino-esque woodland critters. Anyone could a Wii Remote up and fling a baseball at a bunch of Jenga towers, but the difference between simply passing each stage and doing so with a gold-ranked score sorted the men from the boys. One of the rare third-party Wii games that got the balance/selection of control inputs more or less spot-on. Excellent stuff." (I did get one more comment about this, but it wasn't passionate enough either way to go into here or dishonourable mentions. ) I say: Possibly the big one I feel I missed out of this list. NGamer raved about the franchise at the time, and I washed over it because puzzle games on a home console what is this madness. Now I feel like I should have given it a chance to impress me with its cuboid zoology. Third place:- Spoiler:
KororinpaPoints: 15 First places: 1 You say: "It's one of two Wii puzzlers I've played, but I like it enough to rank it up at first nonetheless. This was a great quirky ball rolling title, and I wasted away many an hour on it. There's something truly invigorating flicking the Wiimote to turn the board completely upside down and managing to fluke the ball into the exit. The different balls possessing different properties was a neat touch as well. If I recall rightly, it had pretty decent music too! PANDA BALL FOREVER." "A neat if not a tad too short game. I enjoyed the game all the way through and it was a fun distraction for a coupe of hours. I'd love to play the sequel one day." I say: Marble Mania? The flip, USA!? Anyway, after the various Super Monkey Ball games kicked my backside, I left this one on the shelves. It's a real shame that I never got to experience the magic of the Panda Ball, but it's possibly the best outcome for my blood pressure. Is it a puzzler? Metacritic says it is, and no one voted for it last week, so why not? Second place:- Spoiler:
World of GooPoints: 18 First places: 2 You say: "Such ambition on such an unambitious service wasn’t commonplace, so it’s understandable why this was arguably the star of WiiWare. I didn’t quite agree with some of the ‘Game Of The Year!’ reviews, but it was pretty good once you got your head around it." "Like a physics based version of lemmings, brilliant!" I say: That picture is of the first level in this game that really made me swear. Yes, this is the only puzzler I own on the Wii, and I could only give it third place because I never played much. While it was clever and indubitably charming (in a creepy way), it required too much physics for me. I do pure maths for a reason. So I never really got into it. I did eventually beat the toad, however. Bloody toad. Our Wiikly Winner:- Spoiler:
Zack & WikiPoints: 22 First places: 1 You say: - "A great exclusive for the Wii in it's early days, used the remote well and had some very good eureka moments to it."
- "Used the wii remote well if I remember correctly & I loved how the levels unfolded like crazy version of mouse trap."
- "Looney Tunes humour meets puzzler that's as oldschool as any of the LucasArts point and click games. The art style blew me away at the time, the characters were bonkers, and no two levels had you solving the same puzzle twice. All kinds of frustrating at times, but this is one of those games that kicks you in the balls, whilst demanding that you get back up to give it one more go. Criminally overlooked by 'real' gamers."
- "What I've played was really fun, I should probably go back and finish it one day."
I say: Close, this week! WoG was leading going into the home stretch, but Z&W claimed 11 points on the last day. An undeniable looker, NGamer's reports of irritating boss battles put me off, but it sounds like there were enough great moments to make up for them. The lowest-scoring weekly winner with 22 points, undercutting S&P2 on 27, it's still good to see an early Wii gem showing the others how it's done! Without being Wii Sports, natch. Honourable Mentions: (As with last week, games in bold were voted for by more than one person. Games in red were someone's first choice.) - Spoiler:
Another Code: R – A Journey into Lost Memories, Back to the Future: the Game, Boom Blox Bash Party, A Boy and his Blob, Dr. Mario & Germ Buster, Hydroventure (yes, this is still available for adventure week, but somebody voted for it under the name Fluidity, which is what it's called in the US, and I didn't check and now it's too late. My error) , MaBoShi: The Three Shape Arcade, Mercury Meltdown, Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords, Tales of Monkey Island, Tetris Party, Wario Ware: Smooth Moves, You Me and the Cubes Dishonourable Mentions: - Spoiler:
- Boom Blox Bash Party: "...it's rubbish solo and nobody will play it with me."
- Pop: "Insanely shite. No depth to speak of, physically uncomfortable to play (with it’s non-stop twisting, pointing and shaking) and not addictive in the slightest. That it’s nice and pleasant doesn’t save it."
- Rubik's Puzzle Galaxy: Rush: "I heard it was good somewhere, it wasn't."
- Tales of Monkey Island: "It started off pretty well but the lag seemed to get worse by the episode, as did the plot/puzzles. I gave up mid episode 3 or 4"
- Wario Ware Smooth Moves: "They dicked up the multiplayer!"
Last time I'll rant about this, but since this is the place for ranting, I'll query what the one person who voted for WWSM as a puzzler (mentioning no names ) as opposed to a minigame collection was on at the time. 'Cause it ain't!
And that's that! Week 8 is rhythm games, and presumably I don't need to tell people when the deadline is by now. A reminder: since Bit.Trip Runner failed to garner even a single vote as a platformer, it's back on the table as a rhythm game. Get those votes in! |

Rhythm games...hmm, this could be interesting. |

| Huh. My sentbox says I forgot to vote - I could swear that I had. Sorry, everyone! A fine winner of puzzle week - one I expected but have not played. Rhythm and music games is going to beat me. It's a genre I'm not fond of - having said that, there'll be more games voted for than there were in both racing and beat-'em-up week... |

| Last time:
Already explained why WarioWare is as much a puzzler as a minigame collection. Games are a lot more multifaceted, rich and sophisticated that you appear to appreciate, Balladeer. Simple classification is too neat, and games share the same core gameplay values across a variety of genres. This thread has underlined that each week so far.
True enough, there are types people instinctively recognise, and I don't think there should be too much to argue about this week. Irregardless of classifications, the point of this thread was to find games that we all think people should have in their collection. It doesn't matter if it's a puzzler-platformer or a puzzler-minigame collection at all; this thread was just a different way of looking at the best games on the system.
All down to perspective. |

| All right, Phillips! It's a forum thread: there is no reason to use large font, or "last time"/"than you appear to appreciate", in a way that comes across (to me, anyway) as exasperated. I read your explanation: I just heavily disagreed. I believe that I said elsewhere that I don't think reflexes and concentration are puzzle-defining. Regardless, your vote is in and recognised in the honourable mentions: you've made your point. I am allowed to have that final snipe, given that someone did exactly the same thing about Runner in week 6 and no one complained. As for why I'm trying to pigeonhole games into genres, which I agree is not always clear-cut, the reason is simple: I'd rather have people vote for games on merit, than on a combination of merit and whether they think that game suits the genre. To use an obviously incorrect example, suppose SMG's votes were split between shooter and minigames. Either people can only vote for it once, in which case it wouldn't rank that highly in either, even though it definitely deserves a first place; or people can vote for it multiple times and it'd steal the ranks in both, pushing out other games that deserve a look-in, defeating the point of the thread as described by yourself! You may not like the system, which is fair enough: but I did ask you if you wanted to do this thread yourself, and given that you didn't, I don't think I'm doing gross disservice to your idea! Given that you've picked up MaBoShi again, while others have said they'd try out new games (I need to look at ABahB myself), I'd say that the thread is fulfilling its desired function as well. We're also getting a nice set of rankings, which I personally like. Just so long as it doesn't cause frustration, because that would be silly, it's all good. |
