| No, that one's "strategy/other". Guidelines are under the spoiler in the first post!
Slightly more than 24h to vote, if anyone else wants to. Remember, I'll be looking at votes with and without LKS. Now, I'm going to tidy up the Week 1 Results with a new section: expect it to return tomorrow! |

| Good morning gentlemen (and ladies, potentially)! Feeling bored on a Sunday morning? Well, aren't you lucky that I've decided to open the voting for our next category early! This week's genre is Shooting games, including both FPSes (CoD games, the Red Steels, Medal of Honorwithnoubecauseit'sAmerican) and more "old-school" shooters (S&P, Geometry Wars Galaxies), and as usual it'll be all over by 1800 on Easter Sunday. You can still vote for RPGs (including and excluding Little King's Story) until 1800 tonight.
Let's talk about controversial games for this week. It's already been decided that Resi 4 is to be included, unless there's overwhelming demand for it to go into Adventure or Puzzle or Rhythm Action or something: what about Metroid Prime 3? Jay thinks it's adventure, I feel it went more to the dark side in this third edition, with less exploration and more NPCs. (shudders) Opinions?
Also, include Metroid Prime Trilogy in the votes at all: Y/N? If Y, it'll certainly go into adventure, because the previous two series entries felt like adventure games to me. |

| I disagree, Resi 4 is a very linear game with lots of shooting. Metroid Prime on the other hand embodies the adventure genre as far as I'm concerned, however I've not played 3 so I'm not the greatest judge. I personally would include the trilogy. |

But your primary actions in Resi 4 is shooting zombies, advancing. Plus you get ranked at the end of each mission, which doesn't seem particularly actiony-adventurey to me. As for Metroid Prime 3, it involves backtracking, collecting those damn annoying Energy Cells which were a bugger to find, there's an end boss in each area á la Zelda, you upgrade your equipment as you have done in every other Metroid Prime game...The only prime difference (heh) is that it's less of an isolated action-adventure game due to the inclusion of very poorly implemented "totally RAAAD" bounty-hunter friends, but it's definitely still an adventure game, in my eyes at least. |

| I'm tempted to say that we should just call a spade a spade: you aim and shoot things with a gun, ergo Prime 3 is a shooter. That said, I know shooters can rely on exploration and object-based puzzles too. Honestly, call it both an adventure game and a shooter before a tedious debate begins. PLEASE! |

| Surely that's a tad too black and white XD Having a gun in a game doesn't instantly make it a shooter. Metroid puts its emphasis on exploring therefore it's surely an adventure. Resi 4 is about going where it tells you and killing all the dudes along the way.
I wouldn't say CoD was just a linear shooter as much as it is a corridor shooter, games can give you a little bit of freedom and still be linear, like Crysis. |

| Week 2 end! This week, we had an enormous 12 votes. 12! That's a 50% increase, and in only one case did I have to grovel to the person myself. (Thanks person!) I encourage anyone who hasn't voted yet to get in on the fun and help create a more representative picture of the forum's views. You're not poop, honest. I was just joking last week. Ahem. Fifth place:- Spoiler:
Fire Emblem: Radiant DawnPoints: 16 First places: 2 You say: "...a good follow up on Path of Radiance story wise but was hard as nails..." "I don't think I've enjoyed anything in a RPG like I enjoyed the last hour game. A true strategy RPG great." I say: I've stayed away from the Fire Emblem series, because my mind overheats when confronted by strategy games and I'm scared of losing meaningful characters to perma-death. It looks great for those who can deal with these shortcomings, though. Maybe I should give Awakening a chance... Anyway, clearly a worthy fifth! Fourth place:- Spoiler:
Monster Hunter TriPoints: 17 First places: 1 You say: "...after sinking some hours into it and uncovering all the depth in weapons and monsters I was captured." "...a game that just absolutely consumed me & had me playing it everyday for at least 2 years, quite simply the best game I've ever played." I say: You cruel bastards! Slicing up innocent herbivores (as well as the not-so-innocent and the not-so-herbivorous) to make your equipment! Obviously the game has enough deep online gameplay and great questing to soothe your wounded consciences. I may yet join you in the abattoir on Wii U... Third place:- Spoiler:
The Last StoryPoints: 21 First places: 2 You say: "Love the combat, which is smart without being overwhelming, introducing new skills at just the right pace. A good story (so far) with enjoyable voice acting." "The last great Wii game, and quite the cracker (And it needs to win to annoy Vidofnir )." I say: U mad, Vido? The first game on the list I've played, and it makes me think of this wonderful piece of music first and foremost. Simply beautiful. Also banana crossbows, colouring everything, enjoyable battle mechanics (especially for Zael), and a plot twist out of the wazoo. A great game, and my third place, which would have seemed better if it wasn't overshadowed by... Second place:- Spoiler:
Xenoblade ChroniclesPoints: 24 First places: 3 You say: "I just enjoy everything about it, the battle system, the characters, the setting & last but not least the spectacular musical score." "Probably my favourite RPG of all time, a great world, great characters and a great battle system too. A game I managed to sink 100 hours into in just over a week because I fell in love with it so much." I say: I have lots of little nitpicks I could make about this one. The ending, the lack of treasure chests, some weak writing, the blandness of that one city with the winged chaps, the Mechonis parts in general... But all those criticisms pale into insignificance. Ignoring the splendid combat (Sharla for the win! Quiet, Vidofnir), variety of environments on the Bionis, wonderful soundtrack and endless customisation, there's just such a sense of scale. You're clambering over two massive deities, locked in a battle of cosmic proportions. You have so much glorious freedom to explore their surface, and get mauled by monsters fifty levels higher than you, reinforcing the sense of an entire ecosystem in the background. "Epic" is the only word. My first place, and probably in my top five Wii games overall. It would seem that most people who have played this agree, with only one person's vote placing it lower than second. But that wasn't enough to crown it... Our Wiikly Winner:- Spoiler:
Super Paper MarioPoints: 28 First places: 2 You say: "That script. Does any more really need to be said? Really?" "...a decline from its GC predecessor but still a good entry to the series." "The laziest original game on this list, but still one that sits in my memory; the weakest in the Paper Mario series at the time; far from a showcase for the Wii. I may not be inspiring people to buy it, but still I felt the need to make it to the end of this game where hundreds of other games have failed. Typically fun art style, a competent script, and a likeable trio of villains to fight to the end." "Its cons far outweigh its pros, but what it does right, it does really right. The story is surprisingly good, and its cast of villains is just brilliant. The 3D gimmick was indeed, well, gimmicky, but it did work well. Plus, as to be expected, it was damn funny as all Mario RPGs are. The dark horse of the Mario RPG series, but a good 'un nonetheless." "...(as a wise man once said) a 'hugely underrated game'." I say: I must acknowledge that I'm surprised. Don't get me wrong, I've played this, and I voted for it as my fourth place: but it has lots of flaws. Inconsistent use of the game's main feature, poor implementation of party members, some enormously tedious set-pieces, some wonky character design, and above all a failure to scale the giddy heights left by its predecessors. But that's the power of Mario for you. I'll say this: everyone who gave less than five votes this week included SPM. Two people who only made one vote placed that vote with SPM (even though one placed it second to "none of the above"). His RPGs appeal beyond your normal RPG fans. And even a weak Paper Mario is still a good game, especially where the writing is concerned: a witty script, a brilliant crew of villains (especially Mr. L), some excellent levels (the first trip to Sammer's Kingdom is a particular highlight), and a surprisingly moving ending. The 2D-3D gameplay hook, when used well, shows off what a brilliant idea it really is. Well done, Mario: another week goes to you! Honourable Mentions: - Spoiler:
Final Fantasy IV: the After Years, Muramasa: the Demon Blade (my second), Opoona (my fifth), Pandora's Tower, Rune Factory Frontier, Tales of Graces (Japan only) Dishonourable Mentions: - Spoiler:
- Opoona: "It was pretty s***. It makes the list because it was a Wii RPG and I wanted to flesh out my list a little more."
- Pandora's Tower: "...a naff God of War wannabe..."
- Super Paper Mario: "...a game I didn't really enjoy before I'd even played its predecessor. Only here because I can't, in all honesty, vote for [others.]"
"...liked the idea but too much talk. Also, I had one of the buggy versions that wouldn't let you through a door three hours in."
But what about Little King's Story? - Spoiler:
Following a contentious mid-thread debate, I collected the votes for LKS as well to see what difference including it would have made. The answer is not a lot! It would have come joint seventh, stealing one first-place vote from another game that didn't place, and changing none of the rankings.
Again, thanks to all our voters. Discuss your collective opinions, complain how SPM is a platformer rather than an RPG, and vote in Week Three! ...although it looks like I'm going to have to arbitrate on that one too, which I shall do shortly. In the meantime, I can say that there is no way that a game released on the GC and Wii simultaneously (TP) or a game never seen on Nintendo consoles before ( Okami) are being omitted, especially when they're arguably two of the top adventure contenders.

| Very surprised that SPM finished first. I suppose because it's a Mario RPG it made most lists so picked up a lot of points that way. Interesting result though! - andyman949 wrote:

I wouldn't say CoD was just a linear shooter as much as it is a corridor shooter, games can give you a little bit of freedom and still be linear, like Crysis. Yeah, this is my thoughts summarised. Just out of interest, I checked the Prime trilogy Wikipedia page which had it down as "first person action-adventure" (quite pedantic if you ask me, but that's Wikipedia), but there was a quote from Retro Studios that might solve our issue here: "Lead designer Mark Pacini said that after picking that perspective, the crew decided not to make a traditional first-person shooter, as 'We weren't trying to fit in that genre. We had to break down the stereotypes of what a first-person game is and make a fun Metroid game.'" |

That's even more black and white - you're ignoring that it's a first person shooter. Either way, I suggest it's both a shooter and an adventure game, though it makes no difference to me as I thought the Prime series was mince! ~ I'm happy that the RPG week is over with! Super Paper Mario was OK from what I played, but nothing to suggest that it wouldn't be in my top fifty Wii games. |

| The LAME genre Other M should come under adventure I'd say (dishonourable mentions section of that) Kinda dissapointed at number 1 I like SPM but there's plenty of great RPGs on wii that coulda trumped it. Also FF IV TAY? The game that makes you pay if you want anything other than a brief intro to 5 stories! Thats dishonourable mention material there if I ever did see it! |

| Most of my list this week was filler, and it turns out that one of my filler votes came first. Good to see a decent rundown in that list, and also interesting to note that a couple of the entries were late additions to the Wii's library. I suspect they're there on their own merits (having never played them), but it's also possibly because they're fresh in people's minds. |
