It depends on how successful the NX is, for me. If very, we'll get one. If not, very unlikely. As we don't really know what the NX is or how the market will react to it, it's wise to bet against the necessary success.

Although I would be happy to eat these words later on, I don't particularly care for Mario Strikers and wouldn't mind if it did disappear.

Glad it's not just me that thinks that about the Wii and why I want a lot of the library like SMG remade/remasters with proper controls as the system has some great games held back by its controller.

C'mon now! Sure the wii had some games where motion control etc wasn't necessary but I'd argue it had a tonne more where they made the experience so much better compared to a normal controller.

I still don't get your beef with SMG's remote controls. Laughing

I know EofGiz has the same issue and how gJones describes his experience with the Wii, I would think they also say the same about SMG.

Yeah the system may have some great games that use the motion controls but I think overall what people would say the best games would say they didn't know motion controls.

For me I just never found the Wii mote + nunchuck combo particularly comfortable! When those games came out I was at university in a tiny room so tbh pro and classic controller games were far more fun for me!

Just a preference though and I will say games like zack and wiki were great with motion controls!

So is it fair to say it's a hardware issue for you then rather than the games themselves?

For me the Wiimote'n'Nunchuk was another in a long line of Nintendo controllers about which I thought "I'll never get used to that". The SNES pad had so many buttons; I'd never get used to that, but I did and loved it. The N64 controller looked weird and had a little joystick on it; I'd never get used to that, but I did. In fairness I never properly got used to the GC pad but it was by no means intolerable. The Wii controller took things to a different level: sure, it was uncomfortable at first, and unplugging things from its back when changing games was a pain, but the only major issue with it I ever had was when playing Sonic Riders (which felt like it was designed for the GC pad). Motion controls were shoehorned into games sometimes but they were fun, for a generation.

In my opinion, natch. Winky Face

Wii in the retro sub-forum again. Tongue

I really liked the Wiimote, but I didn't think it was used to its full potential.  We got a glimpse of what that might have been at the end of the console's life, in Skyward Sword - sadly married to some rather peculiar Zelda design choices, but it showed how the Wiimote could not only contribute to, but improve, an existing franchise.

Outside that you had Wii Sports Resort and Wario Ware, but for me, I'm afraid, Mas is right.  Most of the best my favourite Wii games either basically didn't use the 'Mote (Brawl, Muramasa, Xenoblade), or it actively made the game worse (Twilight Princess, Okami).  The Galaxies are funny ones: I spent most of my time wishing the spin attack could have been mapped to a button, but would SMG1 have been as good if the Loopdeloop Galaxy had used conventional controls, say?  I don't think so.

And that's the crux of it for me.  There were moments of genius delivered by the remote, drowned in a sea of half-hearted or poorly thought-out uses where conventional controllers and controls would have been better.  Had Nintendo stuck more firmly to its guns this generation, I think we would have seen more games like SS.  Instead the cycle started over again with trying to justify the Gamepad.

TL;DR: Definitely the software's fault in my eyes, especially once Motion+ had emerged.

Yeah I was right about something, according to Balla

It does seem EofGiz has a problem with a hardware and I may have the same as I've never once said the games are bad and I've been saying since the Wii U was released on how I want to play some of the top games like SMG but with proper controls as I want to play the best games from the system as I know there are good games underneath the controls.

Now I don't know what SMG's Loopdeloop Galaxy is and if it would lose something with traditional controls but who knows without someone doing a version with standard controls.

I don't know if me playing PS360 all the time also had some baring on how I feel about the Wiimote as going from traditional controller to it, may have seemed odd where some of you only had a Wii or picked up one of the others system late, that you may have just got used to the Wiimote.

This was the Top 10 Wii games from the vote though
10. Monster Hunter Tri, We know works fine without a wiimote
9. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption/Trilogy, Well we know two thirds of the Trilogy works fine without a Wiimote and that got the most votes which Balla combined with 3
8. Wii Sports, Needs the Wiimote and would say wouldn't be the same without it
7. Okami, Works fine on PS2 and PS3 as a HD version fine without the Wiimote
6. Super Mario Galaxy 2, From what I've played I reckon it could be played fine without the Wiimote but might be parts you need it like Loopdeloop Galaxy
5. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, I enjoyed the motion controls in this but we know Zelda can be played fine with a controller
4. Super Smash Bros. Brawl, This is best played with a GameCube Contoller
3. Xenoblade Chronicles, Best played with that Red Classic Pro
2. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, GameCube version
1. Super Mario Galaxy 2,  Same as SMG2

I said Yeah the system may have some great games that use the motion controls but I think overall what people would say the best games would say they didn't need motion controls.

Well how many of that Top 10 really needed them just the one Wii Sports all the rest part from SMG if there is bits that use the wiimote, rest can be played with a standard controller or would translate to a standard controller. That's the system best games which I could play most of them fine which kind voids my I want to play the best games from the system as I know there good games underneath the controls. But must be other games worth taking a look in the Wii's library not in that Top 10 but I may just have a issue with the the Wiimote + Nunchuck with certain games, which I think should be played with a traditional controller and Balla even says some of the games he feels are worse due to the controls like Twilight which adds to the traditional controller.

Super Mario Galaxy is a fantastic game that I'm playing at the moment, and the one thing that irks me is that I can't lie down and relax playing it. The way the Wii remote is constantly needed for pointing at the screen means that it's a "sit up and concentrate" experience, for me at least. I don't mind it in games that require pointing at the screen continously (ie. Resi 4, Ghost Squad...) but those are naturally tense experiences anyway. It's just a bit of a pain flicking between casual, "doesn't matter where the remote is pointing" positions to "oh shit point it at the thing, AT THE THING". This is particularly cumbersome when my 4 year old daughter wants to play Mario - Galaxy is a nightmare for navigating menus for the little ones. She enjoys Gamecube games more because of the controller.

So yeah, it has its uses, but where games flick between traditional gameplay and pointing bits, I just find it a bit of a faff myself. I do feel that I'm being picky though as the Wii has some superb games that make use of the Wii's unique controls.

Looking at that list (which is not entirely a list I agree with, personal taste and that) MP3C really benefited from the remote, and that's another good example of how the setup can benefit a series, albeit subtler than SS. Speaking of which, that controller made SS. It would have been much worse without.

So from our favourite ten games, I think you've got two that needed the setup, one substantially improved by it, two (the Galaxies) which are a mixed bag, three that don't use motion controls really, and two that are actively made worse by the presence of motion controls. Take from that what you will.

I found plenty of comfortable ways to lounge on a sofa and use a Wii Remote and nunchuk. Nunchuk behind my head, wiimote waving in front of me, legs on the arm of the sofa... ideal.

Anyway, I bet all of you guys need to sit up and work your 'ceps.

Apart from the comment on the GC pad I agree with all of this, they even became very natural to me that when I played a system with a normal controller it felt odd to me. (but that feeling would only last for 20 mins or so)

----

That top 10 list skews things a little bit since lists are typically open to change years down the road & not everyone would agree with it like Balla mentions & if I really wanted to I could probably find 10 games where motion controls were essential/made the game more fun.

Mas, I understood what you said I just don't agree with it so there's no need to repeat it.

I wasn't repeating just to repeat, I was putting as a header to the Top 10 and what Balla said.

I agree you could find 10 games that use the motion controls well, Wii Sports is one and feels natural but some games like SMG don't to me for reasons EofGiz and gJones said.

I don't get the issue really, I don't like the Wii but what to play some of it's games and hopefully Nintendo remaster them for NX.

There's no issue, I just disagreed that's all & it just seemed like you wanted to tell me your same opinion again. Anyhow let's not go around in a circle eh & get the thread back on topic.

---

Last week or so I figured out that I could use my phone charger for my GB micro (I had to charge via a usb wire & this didn't work in my chromebook or ps4) so not only am I thinking of looking out for new GBA games I'm going to restart Rebelstar tactical command at some point.

Mario Power Tennis (Gamecube)

Won a few tournaments on this last night and while the controls weren't as immediate to register as Virtua Tennis, it quickly became a really fun game (even with the power shots on). As with Toadstool Tour, Power Tennis still looks gorgeous and there's some hilarious animation (particularly on the character select screen). I've not explored the side/mini games yet but I can see myself sinking another 10+ hours in to this bad boy.

Ten hours, no bother. I was mystified as to why Nintendo stripped back Mario Tennis Open so much, as Power Tennis had so much good stuff going on. Perhaps slightly too much, to be fair, but Camelot halved the game for when it recieved a 3DS sequel eight years last (and then gave us 0.00000000000000001% of a game when they released Ultra Smash in 2015). Anyway, you'll enjoy it, it's quality. Thumbs Up!

Mario Party 4

My friends Katie, Jake, Amelia and I played a full 50 round game of this yesterday. It was like the stories people tell of Christmas games of Monopoly. There was screaming, shouting, people jumping up and down losing their minds. . . it was tense, infuriating and exciting. The game seemed to know just when to throw two people together as co-op partners who had recently fallen out.

It was a good laugh, though. I definitely started to feel the frustration of MP's slooooooow turns, something later games have improved a lot.

I'm glad we did it, but I'm not sure I ever want to do it again.

As you may already have seen, Adventures Of Lolo! It feels like the sort of game I should have played at the time, as the one-screen puzzle games of the era are right up my street: the likes of Solomon's Key and Wrecking Crew are great little games, and AoL feels like more of the same. Watch me get incredibly stuck here, if you'd like.

PS I have got past that level now. Embarrassed

Played some Command and Conquer on the Saturn this evening which part of the retro haul I got this year as it is the game I want (which I don't already own). Its even more camp then I remember, the soundtrack is now annoying and the controls Sick

I played all four of the Japanese games I bought which you may have seen elsewhere on the forum and I recorded me playing them.

But really my thoughts are it was fun to get the Saturn our before I play bunch of good games on it soon.

Do I put WiiU SNES VC games in here or the WiiU thread? Either way, I'm just as confused as I am playing Harvest Moon. I'm about half way through the year, and I'm just about making enough money to survive; I'm growing crops as I can afford them, and have 2 chickens, and I think I'm feeding them properly so they don't die. The translation on the SNES original is janky as all heck. I also don't know how important it is (and how quickly) I should be choosing a waifu, as this is the sort of bollocks I'd normally steer clear of. None of them look completely grown-up and it's all a bit awkward. I fancy one of their mums, but that's it. So I've randomly chosen the one who likes flowers, and gave her a flower, and she told me off for randomly picking flowers. This is too much like real life am I right?*

*The answer is no
