| The cube version did get scores in the 6 range but the dreamcast version got 8s back in the day. And is suppose to be one of the best SHUMPS on the system but not sure if it's on the same level as Ikaruga though. |

| There's a new Monster Hunter 4 Streetpass puzzle in Japan. Notable because its the first third party game that has one, and it arrived long before the puzzles you'd expect - 3DW and ALBW. |

| Have they stopped selling the 3DS in England as they have in Australia?
The 3DS was discontinued and replaced with the 2DS. That means they still have the XL, but it seems a bit odd that they don't sell the regular 3DS anymore. I thought there was room for all 3, but perhaps sales didn't match that, or it is just too hard having 3 models of the console in shops at the same time. So what is the story in your land? |

| I doubt it, there's a pretty big advertising campaign on the radio at the moment advertising the 3 types. |

| That's an interesting observation.
I actually welcome this phasing out of the 3DS (as much as it's so much better than the 2DS value-wise to the consumer), if only because it opens the door for a new 3DS model to arrive next year. I really hope it happens, as I've held off on the XL so far. |

I really hope it happens, as I've held off on the XL so far. It would make the launch a completely remade 3DS a lot easier if it had been gone for a while and it could assist if they radically change the design. Not sure how different they could make it though, other than the obvious thinner and lighter. The major change I would make is branding on the cover, a really nice logo to make it clear what it is to the casual observer. |

| - Quote :
- Nintendo must pay royalties for every 3DS following court ruling
The gavel has come down against Nintendo following a court ruling that the Kyoto-based company infringed on a patent in the creation of its glasses-free 3D tech. As a result Nintendo must pay 1.82 per cent of the wholesale price of every 3DS sold to patent holder Tomita Technologies.
The 2DS, however, doesn't infringe on anyone with its old fashioned touchscreen. As reported by Law 360 (via NeoGAF), this comes down to about $3 (£2) per unit at the moment. Initially, Tomita wanted Nintendo to pay a flat fee per unit sold, but Judge Rakoff decided that would be too generous to Tomita as the price of the handheld will natural decrease over time.
"If, as Tomita suggests, the ongoing royalty rate were expressed as a flat dollar amount per unit sold, Tomita would capture an increasingly large proportion of each sale as the price falls, even as the technology's reliance on the infringed patent remains constant," said Judge Rakoff in a statement. "This would result in an unearned windfall for Tomita, and, accordingly, the court prefers an ongoing royalty rate expressed as a percentage of wholesale price."
Given that the massively popular handheld has already sold 35 million units, this'll still set Nintendo back $105 million and counting. Not the news it needed after its Wii U only shifted 3.91 million units worldwide at of the end of Q3 2013, while its lifelong UK sales were only 150K a month ago.
This is the second time Nintendo's had to pay up following a 3DS patent infringement charge against Tomita. In March Nintendo lost a lawsuit against the technology corporation and was ordered to pay $30.2 million, though this was later changed to only $15.1 million.
We've contacted Nintendo to see if it will comment on the lawsuit and if it intends to fight the ruling further.

| Wait. Two separate cases/payments? I was giving the company and courts the benefit of the doubt, because I'm not a lawyer or anything, but that seems odd to me. I wonder if they'll appeal. |

That is awesome news. Pity I got 2 NTSC consoles first. Now if they can hack out the region coding on the Wii U I will be even happier. EDIT: Seems kind of pointless as it doesn't work with the latest update.

| Nintendo did win a lawsuit too - related to Wii Fit. See Wii U news for details lol. Oh, and the 3DS was the top selling gaming hardware in the UK in 2013 (which is quite a surprise given the "major supermarkets no longer stocking Nintendo" narrative.) - MCV wrote:

"However, PS4 wasn't the best-selling games device of 2013. That title belongs to the 3DS, which enjoyed strong sales thanks to a number of big releases and the launch of the 2DS."

Hasn't that narrative been more about Wii U than 3DS? |

| The details of the rumour may not be true, but I'd be surprised if Nintendo weren't working on new hardware.
Hopefully we'll see a new upgraded 3DS model this year, though. The XL isn't perfect, as much as I want one, and I'd like to think there would be demand for a higher end 3DS much like there was for the DSi after the platform became that much more compelling over time.
I didn't invest in a 3DS XL at launch simply because 3DS's games library wasn't enough to justify getting one at the time, but I'd certainly be at a 3DS Plus or whatever Nintendo come up with when that's released.
3DS aside, I wonder whether Nintendo will work to create some sort of unified platform sharing the same architecture for their next two systems. It would certainly help somewhat to solve the problem of Wii U and 3DS competing with each other, but it doesn't seem like something they would do given Nintendo's job is to offer unique experiences: a unified platform from a videogames point of view (think games which work both on iPhones and iPad) doesn't create much differentiation. |
