| If Djokovic wins, nobody gets results. You'll get a string of swear words and bitter anti-Serbian sentiments. |

| Apologies for the delay chums, the pub I was watching the tennis match in was doing a "one free pint if Murray wins" deal, so I had to stay and enjoy that offer before racing back to the flat to type up this. So without further ado, let's hop to it. Thanks to the thirteen of you that voted this week! Surprising that more voted with such a sparse category, but you are all manly men in my eyes for turning out so admirably. Fifth Place - - Spoiler:
Dementium: The Ward - 5 pointsYou say: "Properly scary shooting on a handheld; count me in! Of course, its about a hospital, and only sissies go to hospital. And a real man could use a gun and a torch at the same time. In fact, this isn't manly at all." "One of the few FPS games that worked on the DS but you're a man so shouldn't find it too scary.....wait what was that noise?" I say: I was definitely intrigued when this first came out - a survival horror on the DS? It works well though, according to the two folk who voted for it. Also Fifth Place - - Spoiler:
Aliens Infestation - 5 pointsYou say: "Yeah! I'm a big manly marine with a gOHMYGOD WHAT WAS THAT NOISE? Okay, it was nothing. So yeah, like I said, I'm a big manly many with a gun. Or rather, five manly men. Oh, they're dead, its just me agOH MY GOD AAAAAAARRGH!" "Space marines? check, pulse rifles? check, Xenomorphs? check. This is a great 2d shooter which captures the Aliens the universe perfectly, wayforward at its finest." I say: Looks very interesting! Had never heard of it before this vote, but seems to be in a sort of Metroid style, and with the obvious Alien influences on the Metroid series, an Aliens game in a Metroid style would be a natural fit. Fifth Place as well... - - Spoiler:
Ultimate Mortal Kombat - 5 points (1st places - 1)You say: Nothing. The voter of this game neglected to say anything along with their vote. I say: MORTAL KOMBAAAAAT! Always enjoy these games, although I have no idea how it would hold up on DS. I'd imagine it's quite good, considering it received a first place. Shame a game with only one vote placed on our list, although having said that... Fifth Place...AGAIN - - Spoiler:
Contra 4 - 5 points (1st places - 1)You say: Nothing...because it was my first place. I say: I picked this up during a family holiday to the US, and I was very happy with it. The earlier Contra games are some of my favourites, and the DS version is such a throwback. Brick hard, with bullets flying around both screens, but so damn satisfying when you succeed. If you can pick up a copy, I recommend it wholly. Also, can you get manlier than Contra? Fourth Place - - Spoiler:
GTA: Chinatown Wars - 12 points (1st places - 1)You say: "Classic GTA gameplay that still held up when returning to the top down perspective, some interesting new additions as well such as the drug dealing side quest." "My first 18 rated game that I managed to buy through the internets lack of age checking. The story was good, the gameplay fun and there were only a few pointless touch screen minigames thrown in. A must buy!" "Does it get more manlier than ramming cops off the road, hotwiring cars with the stylus & buying/selling drugs?" I say: GTA on a Nintendo console would have once seemed as unlikely as Sonic on an Nintendo console, but here we are. Got a chuckle out of "some interesting new additions as well such as the drug dealing side quest", as it just seems so unlikely a sentence to use when describing a DS game, but here we are. Third Place - - Spoiler:
Metroid Prime Hunters - 15 pointsYou say: "Made up for a dire single-player with a pretty fun multiplayer... so long as it wasn't online with hacking randoms. The other bounty hunters were less hateful than Corruption's too, because they didn't speak." "I suppose the multiplayer for this was very good when it wasn't inducing RSI." "This Samus Aran dude is a real tough guy. I've got a lot of time for him, no matter what anyone says. Sure, it never captured the real exploration vibe of the classic Metroids but the multiplayer was memorable and the action is exciting. Also, the storyline was nicely told, subtle bits and bobs in the scanning. I liked that." I say: Right, the controls were a pile of wank, sure, but once you worked them out, playing an FPS on the DS worked surprisingly well. Plus, it's Metroid. Second Place - - Spoiler:
Starfox Command - 23 points (1st places - 1)You say: "The shooting worked surprisingly well with the touch-screen, and the multiplayer wasn't (as) bad (as SF64's)." "Only for it's actual gameplay ship-fighting sections though. The strategy bits weren't bad or anything, but they're not Starfox. Meanwhile, the general plot and universe was an absolute fucking bastardisation of the series and if they don't just write it all off as non-canon bullshit there is going to be serious issues taken." "Tactical gameplay that made good use of the DS touch screen coupled with some great dogfights, online play was great fun too" "I'm not a lover of the Star Fox series so the lack of any recent version hasn't bothered me as it's not like they're going to make another Adventure. This however is the best of the Star Fox games and it had me gripped. The tactical screens were good, the fighting was fun and getting to use lots of different characters as you go on very varied routes through the story was fantastic. One of the first games I ever 100%'d it just sucked me in!" I say: It's Starfox... but not the Starfox I want. Makes me yearn for another Starfox 64 style of game, but Command worked well enough I suppose. Nothing too special in my eyes. And, the Andy Murray Award for Manliest Man-Game goes to...- Spoiler:
In a stunning turn of events, we have a 5 way tie for 1st place! Your winners are: Cooking Mama 3, Imagine Babyz, Style Boutique, Secret Flirts and of course, Doki Doki Majo Shinpan - 25 points (First places - 2 apiece)You say: Cooking Mama 3: "Stunning. Improves on the previous two and made me cry." Imagine Babyz: "Makes me yearn for a womb." Style Boutique: "This helped me get my position at Vogue." Secret Flirts: "A must for any batchelor seeking a lady". Doki Doki Majo Shinpan: " CENSORED FOR DECENCY" ...sigh. But really, the Arnold Schwarzenegger Award for Manliest Game is...- Spoiler:
Mario Kart DS - 53 points (1st places - 9)You say: "A bit soulless compared to some in the franchise, but MISSION MODE. Best single-player addition to the franchise ever! Where's it been since? " "It's a racing game! That I've played! With cars! It's not Mario Kart 7! Exclamation mark!......... nope that's it." "Best Mario Kart. Yes, that's right. Best. Mario. Kart. Wait, I have to write more? No, I think I've made myself clear already." "Wait? Mario Kart. Manly? Sure why not, as good a racer as you can get on DS and the first in the series to embrace proper online play. The stages were some of the best in the series too." "The one and only. A lovely little title." "An obvious addition to the list. This is probably my second favourite version and I have played it for so many hours. The tracks were good, the racing was good and DS download play meant it was a must have for any gathering. Top stuff!" "A strong debut for Nintendo’s WFC, and definitely the most complete Mario Kart game up to that point…but it's a shame that the single player wasn’t particularly challenging and that a lot of the design wasn’t as good as that of the previous three Mario Kart games." "Or: the last Mario Kart before they fecked about with the formula too much. No bikes, no stupid underwater bits, just a straight-up dash to the finish line with the best fun/frustration balance of A.I. since Mario Kart 64. Fun bonus missions, and the 8-way multiplayer was an absolutely seamless triumph. Happy days." "Look at the hair on that upper lip! Look at those nice, white driving gloves. Look at that big, yellow articulated machinery. Ooh-rah!" I say: There could be only one winner, right? Drove off with this victory with more ease than Murray had putting away Djokovic ( ) and didn't look back. I only ever played this on DS Download Play (stellar idea, by the by) but what I did play I loved. Seems like one of the best Mario Karts of all time judging by your enthused response and how convincingly it smashed the opposition into non-manly lumps.
Honourable Mentions (games voted by more than one person are in italics, games which were someone's first choice are in bold, game which were voted by more than one person and were someone's first choice are in red) - Spoiler:
Diddy Kong Racing, Combat of Giants: Dragons, Big Bang Mini, Nanostray, Space Invaders Extreme, Viewtiful Joe Double Trouble, Monster Trucks DS, Resident Evil: Deadly Silence, Bangai-O Spirits, Ridge Racer DS, Asphalt Urban GT, Jump Superstars, Dragonball Z: Supersonic Warriors 2, Pokemon Dash Dishonourable Mentions:- Spoiler:
Starfox Command: "Playing through the same levels umpteen times to get to a marginally different ending cut-scene is a stupid idea, especially when none of the levels are particularly memorable." "It just seems that with each new Starfox game they get further from the ideals of Star Fox 64. Sigh." "They took everyone's least-favourite aspect of Star Fox 64: All-Range Mode, turned it into a full game and shoved it onto a handheld the size of a deluxe bar of soap. An absolute crippler to play because of the demand to use the shoulder buttons, if I recall." Metroid Prime Hunters: "The DS simply didn't have the grunt to deliver the beautiful and varying 3D locales that made the original Prime great. As such, the single-player was mince." "God, those controls. Clawhand - and not particularly lefty-friendly either!" Metroid 2D DS: "For not existing. The DS could have handled this in its sleep. Instead we got Hunters' single-player. :medusa: " Crazy Frog Racer: "My brother bought this game after I desperately tried to convince him otherwise. It was dreadful, nuff said." King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie: "I didn't like the movie, too many apes. But it is pretty manly and the game is no exception- lots of apes and crabs and apparently a T-Rex later on in the game. Unfortunately I'll never know for sure if it exists because the graphics were poor (even at the time) and the controls were ill-thought out to the point that I just wanted to burn my DS and leave gaming for a life of topiary. I honestly can't really give this game any honest praise. Several of my friends had it and loathed it just the same. Easily the dullest turd in my collection. Rant done, here's Mr. asshat to wave me out: " MySims Racing: "Looks decent enough, but the cornering controls were a bit arse, and even so it was easier than a one-pound-an-hour hooker." Diddy Kong Racing DS: "Haven't played it, granted, but it has 'blow into the mic to boost-start' bits. As unbelievable as it is unacceptable."
Well there we have it! Next week is Sports and Minigames, so get your votes in folks! We've already had one vote in preemptively, and it's sprung up a problem - Izanuma Eleven, an RPG or a sports title? (Also just to clarify, I including all the 5 point placed games as I felt it'd be unfair to exclude them just because some of the five-pointers were someone's first choice) |

| 13 in your second week? Bloody hell! I got 13 votes twice (three times if you include the final week). "Jealous" doesn't begin to describe it. :medusa:
Anyhoo, that's not a particularly surprising list (apart from Doki Doki being cruelly robbed at the last hurdle); although SFC, better than MPH? WTF? Surprised that more people didn't vote for Pokémon Dash either: as filler, it wasn't too shabby.
BRING BACK MISSION MODE.
We may be seeing a pattern in my votes: five votes first week, four second, and this week I'll be lucky to make three. We'll see how things go... |

| Some classic comments again this week, chaps. Good to see Mazza Kart top the list, there was really no other first. Interestingly, can I take it from the votes that nobody involved has played the DS version of Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing (myself included)? I wish I'd known that Big Bang Mini could've made the cut. I was a bit at loss of how to classify that game... |

| For my money, Inazuma Eleven is an RPG where the battle system just happens to be football-based. That's my vote cast but if it were to go into sports week I would be relieved as it'd give me two extra votes! As for manly games - again, forgot I'd played Metroid Prime Hunters (and liked it) and didn't even think about Chinatown Wars being manly. For me it was a connected series of minigames! Anyway, all good fun! Big thanks to Jay for his efforts. |

| So we have one for sport and one for RPG for Izanuma Eleven... anyone want to chip in? Based on gameplay videos I've watched of it, I'd label it an RPG with footie-based combat, but it's up to you lot! |

Only two votes so far (although I haven't even put my votes in yet, so I should hop to that). |

EDIT: Wait, make that two of the games. Honestly, it's the DS software library, not me! |

| Amazingly, I have five for this week. One question though: we're not having the three Brain Training games and all their shoddy, shoddy tributes this week, are we? There's arguments for, there's arguments against. |

| I took Brain Training as puzzle, and it got votes, so I'd be inclined to say nope. I'll gladly hear arguments for its inclusion though!
Also, if I told you what was second place right now you would never believe me.
