@Jimbob on Dragons Lair you say nice idea, but doesn't constitute a game but what does and if it's not a classic game what is it, as I'm' pretty sure its a classic just look at how many times it's been released over the years.
An experiment in gaming that didn't pay off. Jay sums it up well as an interactive cartoon; one where you have to hit the skip button at the right time to avoid going back to the DVD menu. It's not fun though; a game purely made of QTEs generally won't be... Mr. Cage.
Ports of the game (for systems that couldn't handle the laserdisc animation) were more "gamey" but they were all uniformly shit, despite being vastly different on all platforms.

I like Mr Cage's games and ones like it, maybe that's why I think Dragons Liar is a classic as even after all this time we still remember it.

Another World (Out of This World) - Yes
Aladdin - Yes
Rayman - No
Worms - YES

I'd like to add some dumb retro shit now:

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Full Throttle
Sam & Max Hit the Road
The Settlers
Theme Park
Myst
Magicland Dizzy (my God, the 8-bit computers held on for too long)
Seymour Goes to Hollywood
One Must Fall 2097 (anyone at all ?!)
Knights of the Sky (anyone?!)
SkiFree (!)

How is MKII not a classic Jimbob, it's one of the best fighters of that era and after all the years after of shite MK games, MK9 was a reboot of MKII pretty much.

Also on VB Wario Land have you played it, if yes then I'll let you of but if No then I'm not sure how you can No it as it's the systems best game along with Mario Tennis as there both excellent games that have both got a bit of following of people wanting them on the 3DS that people can actually play them and see that the VB had good games, it was just the system which was bad.

Madness, Sonic 2 I can kinda let off because of Sonic CD as it's arguably the best Sonic but Sonic 2 put the Mega Drive & Sonic on the map also Cappa was so pleased to see it on 3DS "CLASSIC's".

On MKII total madness as the reason I said to Jimbob. Not putting anything forward though Drunka, it's some good years for gaming.

Mortal Kombat is shit and has always been shit and will always be shit. If you want to make some namby pamby argument that it should go in for its importance and cultural impact and so on, that's the first game surely? But no, it is bollocks.

I might add some stuff after I have a little think.

It was shit between 3 - 9 yes agree but now it's pretty good and even played at competitive level.

MKII did more then MK did and even spawned a very 90's movie and made it a big franchise.

Street Fighter II's movement and combat always felt fluid - even if you were playing as a tank like Zangief. The early Mortal Kombats felt horrible in comparison; a bit like early 3D FIFAs in that, had you pressed the wrong button 5 seconds ago, you'd be rooted to an ineviatable failure. It's only MK's edgy encroachment on the general public that causes it to resonate today. I appreciate a game being a classic is not the same as me liking it (I'm still not sure about even 2D Sonics, but I can see what people like about it, and it tidies up a lot of the problems of the first, hence me Yessing it) but I don't think the game itself deserves a plinth in the museum of gaming. Maybe we could just put a news broadcast from the mid 90s on the plinth instead.

In all fairness I haven't. However I've played with a Virtual Boy for 30 seconds, which convinced me never to do so again - immediately uncomfortable. I therefore can't believe any game would be worth attempting to play. I will watch that video; however I really can't imagine it's going to change my mind. I will promise to keep said mind open though.
Edit: I can see that Wario Land is a good game, and if they released it on the 3DS VC, it'd sit nicely alongside the other Warios there. But I don't think it looks as fun as WL3, and I don't think I voted that as a classic (too lazy to check back of course!). If you want to be really pedantic you can change it to an abstain.

More upsets coming:
Streets of Rage - No
Streets of Rage 2 - Yes - Even though I hate side-scrolling brawlers, I can see why people say it's the best. A little begrudgingly...
Alien Storm - No
Virtua Fighter 2 - No
SEGA Rally - Abstain
Two Crude Dudes - Abstain
Speedball 2 - Yes
Columns - No. I do like puzzlers, but I don't think Columns holds up to Puyo Pop and Tetris
Daytona USA - Yes
Virtua Cop - Abstain
Ridge Racer - No
Golden Axe 2 - No
Lemmings - Was this not in the SNES list? If not, then YES
Super Off Road - No
Street Racer - Abstain

You make some good points Jim, I reckon it's in the VGM but more of the culture reasons.

But I still prefer MK over SF of that era and even now because of story modes.

Due to work tomorrow Boo were starting a day early.

Last week we had 13 games go in which isn't bad at all but we move on to the shortest time period I've got planned, but this is arguably the golden era of gaming (unless your Andy) with games making there leap to 3D & legendary franchises being born and these 15 yes 15 I've put forward just shows how good this era is and that doesn't include stuff from Nintendo at the time.

Counting Classics on Consoles - Page 17 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Counting Classics on Consoles   Counting Classics on Consoles - Page 17 EmptySat 17 Oct 2015 - 1:02

Love this period in gaming. I'm going to nominate a lot this week. So, with my abstains removed:

Tomb Raider: Reluctant yep. I played it again recently and holy shit, it is dated. But it's a classic due to how bloody important it is.
Final Fantasy VII: Hell yes.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night: Oh hell yes.
Tekken 3: Yep!
Metal Gear Solid: Yep. Again, it's dated, but I still had a lot of fun with it.
Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped: Yep!
SoulCalibur: No. Outclassed by its sequel.
Crazy Taxi: Yep!

I'd like to put forward the following:

Crash Bandicoot
Crash Bandicoot 2
Half-Life
Age of Empires II
PaRappa the Rapper
Tomb Raider II
Tomb Raider III
Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer
Crash Team Racing

This time period occurs when I'm dropping out of gaming for a while - so there will not be a lot here. In fact:

Final Fantasy VII YES (my fifteen minutes with it have me convinced Shocked )
Crash Bandicoot NO (clunky at the time)

Wow. That is empty...

This is my most Nintendo-only era I think... so... I'm missing out the Abstains also:

Tomb Raider - Yes. Although the Anniversary Edition makes it into a proper modern game that knows what it was doing, you can't deny the impact it had.
Castlevania SOTY - Yes. Because what is an abstain? A miserable pile of se*SHOT**DIES*
Silent Hill - Yes
Crazy Taxi - No
Crash Bandicoot - No. I know you shouldn't judge a game after 10 seconds of play, but...
Half-Life - Yes; although I didn't get on with it personally, I "get it"
Parappa the Rapper - Yes

Jerky contribution time:

Are we doing first release, or PAL releases? As Shenmue was out Xmas 2000.

Right then...

Tomb Raider YES even though it plays like arse today.
Final Fantasy VII Abstain - something I'll probably rectify on PS4.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. I'm going to say Abstain as I've only played the demo. It was decent but considering the amount of hype, I don't think I played enough to really "get" it.
Tekken 3 YES other than Soul Blade, best 3D fighter on PS1.
Resident Evil 2 YES. MAny memories of this.
Panzer Dragoon Saga Abstain. And probably never likely to play this due to the cost.
StarCraft Abstain.
Metal Gear Solid YES even though I'm not an MGS fan.
Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped No. Crash Bandicoot is shit.
Silent Hill YES.
SoulCalibur HELL YES. Still the best 3D fighter.
Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure (The Best Sonic) NO. Is this the one on Neo Geo Pocket?
Shenmue YES
Crazy Taxi YES
The Longest Journey Abstain
Crash Bandicoot NO
Crash Bandicoot 2 NO
Half-Life YES
Age of Empires II Abstain
PaRappa the Rapper Abstain
Tomb Raider II YES
Tomb Raider III Abstain
Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer NO.
Crash Team Racing NO.
Grim Fandango Abstain
Counter-Strike Abstain
Grand Theft Auto YES.

I'll add;

MDK
Worms 2
Theme Hospital
Guardian Heroes
House of the Dead 2
Power Stone
