Unpopular opinion: steak is overrated. I've given up beef (as a small concession to my ingrained carnivorous ways), and I miss roast beef with yorkies and burgers - but not steak. It's only really good because of the peppercorn sauce IMO.

I've never been keen on steak or any beef really part from burgers, same kinda goes for pork but that has bacon and sausages. Might be why my iron levels were low.

Did pick up some Linda sausages from the chilled section, I will let you know what I think.

I agree with you both: it was always heavily implied when I was a kid, from TV mostly, that steak was the most amazing thing to eat in the whole world. I'd much rather have smoked salmon.

You're all off your trolley, steak is TIGHT.

There is a Qorn thingy, I'm pretty sure I had it in my veggie days. It was nice and edible but not much like steak.

Anyone who doesn’t think Steak is the GOAT has not been eating the right steak 💯

I legit want to go back to Cape Town purely to eat the best steak I’ve ever had again💖

The last steak I ever had was in a revolving restaurant on the Nevada/California border (but in the Nevada side) at Lake Tahoe.

It was a T-bone steak, with each section cooked in a different way (or something, can't quite remember). It was succulent and the meat peeled off the bone. Whatever it was seasoned with, it was done to perfection. The most expensive thing on their menu, but it was one of the nicest things I've ever eaten. If your travels ever take you to Lake Tahoe, go in the revolving restaurant and order that.

Oh man, steak is awesome when it's cooked properly. Season it well, don't overcook it and it's delicious.

When I lived in Edinburgh, there was an Argentinian steakhouse that I went to a few times - amazingly cooked steak with this brilliant sort of tomato relish designed to go with the steak. I don't know if it's still there, but I should go back sometime if it is.

Now had my Linda McCartney Sausages, miles better than the vegan plant based stuff and strangely seemed to be Richmond Sausages.

I would eat them again and where I'm going the section of veggie/vegan is bigger plus I might have a freezer.

That could see me getting more stuff, unless budgeting makes it unlikely.

How have you managed to last this long without a freezer? Confused

Rather easily, I normally do a weeklyish shop on a day off, and just get chilled stuff which normally last a week or me anyway. Just take sausages, at the moment I buy like a 6 pack, where I guess with a freezer could buy a big bag for similar cost going forward.

We cook a lot of frozen food. Its the microwave that we've been without forever.

Now that you've tried the sausages, I'd recommend the burgers (which are my favourite).

In my flat, we've worked through most of the desirable Christmas food gifts now (fucking hell, so much chocolate). I hit up the Orange & Spiced Rum flavoured marmalade we were given this morning. Sick Sulk

I'm not particularly fond of citrusy flavours, but this was really weird. Yuck. Give me strawberry/raspberry jam or marmite over this any day.

Marmite over marmalade? Sounds pretty gross . . .

Marmalade is... Okay it's not that good but my dad made it himself, so it's very nostalgic for me. I have it on toast when I go to stay with the family over Christmastime.

I specifically ask people not to give me chocolate for Christmas these days, because I will eat it and swell.

I like marmite occasionally. It's not the go-to toast topping but I like it on occasion.... Eh? unless you meant literally over marmalade Sick I used to layer honey over marmite and have it on toast though, it was weirdly nice

I'm not surprised by that: marmalade on butter is Very Good, so it would probably work with honey too.

I only reeeeeeeally like honey in warm cold-preventing drinks.

...sure you haven't acquired a durian by mistake?

Now that I know what they actually are, I find it very amusing that Mario kicks durians around in Sunshine. One overripe fruit bursting on the street and you have a whole more cleaning up to do, plumber boy. Probably smells worse than Bowser Jr.'s goop too.

Is that the Thai fruit that's banned from being exported because of the smell? This was milder for sure but it definitely smelt like chunder. Apparently if you sprinkle some lime onto it the smell goes away. We've still got one left so will try this next time!

Welp, The Lady and I tried some Linda McCartney sossies. The texture is that of the most processed sausages imaginable, which are probably the ones in Heinz Spaghetti and Sausages, but bigger. It didn't really work for me, but I'd try them again. Join us in the Drink Thread for Part 2 of Balla's Adventures in Veganism...

People always rave about them as the sausage to go for if you're skipping meat, so that's surprising to hear. I didn't know you were giving veganism a go, Balla! What made you fancy that?

Oh I'm not, I was raised as too much of a confirmed carnivore for that. The closest I can do is to give up beef. I figured I might give these things a try, though, on the grounds of working towards being a better person to the planet. The Lady's a big vegetarian food fan, which helps.
