| I didn't say any but mine be same as few of these like play backlog which think out of the 1900+ games I have access games to be lots I want to play, yet doing the backlog challenge for PoW couldn't think of 5 games I really wanted to play.
Holiday again be good especially as I now work weekend in then weekend off, that I can just go i'll go Cardiff for weekend without needing to book holiday.
Moving out still a thing but still waiting for Dad to get better after 22 months, think he's even getting worse mentally after Grandads passing. |

| THE PAOLUMU AWARD FOR NONTENDO GAME OF THE YEAR(11 voters, 38 votes)Last year, 'nothing' came in first with an eight-vote lead. Now that the BBoPs have bedded in a bit, how does this year fare in comparison? - Fifth Place:
= Hitman 3 (6 points, 2 votes, 1 first) You say:“One of the best trilogies ever made quite frankly.” “Haven't played enough of this to score it higher but what I have played is great, allows for creativity and experimentation with fun and sometimes hilarious results." = Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy (6 points, 2 votes, 1 first) You say:“An absolute joy from start to finish, a really focused and engaging story with some great characters kept me hooked from the very beginning. Plenty of memorable moments, a fantastic soundtrack and some of the funniest writing I've ever heard in a game make this one of my favourites of 2021.” “A surprise hit at the end of the year. Has big Mass Effect energy with a more established pool of squadmates to draw from, a little bit more depth to the combat would send this soaring to the top, lets hope for more!” I say: Nothing to say about either of these two I'm afraid.
- Fourth Place:
Returnal (8 points, 2 votes, 0 firsts) You say:“Easily one of the toughest games I've played in a long time, but damn, it's satisfying to get good at this. I couldn't help but compare this to Hades given they both come from the roguelite genre and whilst I preferred Hades's blend of storytelling tied to the death loop mechanic, I do think Returnal smashed it in some areas perhaps even better than Hades did. The combat is frantic and purposefully stressful, with pounding music and a flurry of lasers and neon bullets hurtling towards you. In some respects, it reminded me of Thumper in how half the challenge is getting through the sensory overload on screen. Once you enter that flow state of dodging bullets whilst returning with your own hail of fire, the game really becomes something special. The haptic feedback and adaptive triggers on the DualSense did a solid job of heightening the experience too.” “Incredibly frustrating and punishing but in a way that makes even the smallest successes feel amazing. Gameplay feels so well made and responsive, the atmosphere is both tense and a magical at the same time and whilst the main character is a bit of a wet blanket the story is perfectly mysterious.” I say: Roguelite, is it? Yeeeeeeeeeeeah. Also Thumper was bobbins.
- Third Place:
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart (10 points, 3 votes, 0 firsts) You say:“I do think this got overlooked somewhat when it came to end of year awards from publications. Visually quality isn't everything, I know, but this is genuinely the prettiest game I've ever played. I know the whole "it looks like a Pixar movie" quote was memed to high heaven, but it's true. Graphical quality aside, A Rift in Time was a breezy platforming delight. I enjoyed each level and the R&C formula of throwing zany weapons at you at a steady pace still works well. There really is something to be said for a game that doesn't overstay its welcome with supremely high production values. Despite being done with it, platinum trophy and all in about 15 hours or so, I still very much felt like I got my money's worth.” “I may seem a little down on this because it does very little new with the series and gets repetitive but that's not necessarily a bad thing, the Ratchet gameplay is solid, satisfying and features some brilliant set pieces, well worth playing just not the system seller it's painted as.” “Shows what that PS5 can do.” I say: There were two bigger-budget colourful Nontendo 3D platformers released in 2021. This isn't the one I'm jealous of.
- Second Place:
Wordle (10 points, 2 votes, 2 firsts) You say:“It feels like I'm doing something smart when I wake up, and it's better than scrolling twitter or youtube or something.” “It’s the best and only game off Switch I’ve played from 2021, so I’m giving it five points. Because I can.” I say: Ha ha, yessssss! This is the only Nontendo game I played from 2021 (even though I only began it in 2022) and so got my five points. Beautifully simple, I've really enjoyed my time with it. Now that Dordle has a daily version, it might well get my points for 2022. Or I might forget about it by December.
- And The Winner Is...:
Deathloop (12 points, 3 votes, 1 first) You say:“Takes a lot of what makes Dishonored great and removes the sense of guilt for going in and just tearing enemies apart. Juliana fights are tense and always a good time.” “Round round, baby, round round spinning out on me” “I can't believe Mas didn't like this??” I say: And we're back to the faces. I think I'd have guessed that this would come first, but like several of the other games in this top five six, not my bag. Glad the three of you enjoyed it, though!
- Missed the cut:
All of these games got a single vote - apart from It Takes Two, which appropriately enough got two 2s! First set have 5 points apiece, descending by one each time. Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker- Moyles wrote an essay for this so I'm re-spoilering it:
“Despite playing it for literally more than a thousand hours, I've never really written about FFXIV on the forum outside of a couple of music posts and mentioning that I'm playing it in nigh on every thread in 2020. But, for those that know my love for the game, it should come as no surprise that the recent expansion blew my socks off and then some. A big part of FFXIV that separates it from its MMO contemporaries is its focus on story. A lot of MMOs cater more towards the player who wants to fight the hardest bosses or do battle in PVP and there's very little emphasis on story. Personally, I love that I get the best of both worlds with FFXIV. You can play this as a mostly single player JRPG if you want and just pretend the random players in dungeons are NPCs - or in the case of the more recent expansions, literally play through the dungeons with a party of NPCs. Endwalker might have been the riskiest story they've told to date as it was designed to be the culmination of a ten plus year ongoing storyline that's been told since the game first launched. It wouldn't have been a surprise if they had failed to deliver a satisfying conclusion to this story, but they delivered in spades with a tale full of emotional character moments, high drama and some kick-ass boss battles including the best JRPG final boss I've ever faced. Couple that with the fact it scratches a multiplayer gaming itch for me with its well-crafted dungeons and bosses and add in some of the best music I've ever heard in a game and you've got a world-beating RPG, let alone an MMORPG. Am I probably going to be the only person voting for this? Yeah. Do I care? Absolutely not.” Hades - “This was robbed of first last year so it's time to correct that. ” Mass Effect Legendary Edition - “Bundle up the best games of all time and do some much needed updates to the gameplay of the weakest entry. It's a joy to be back with Shepard and the crew and all in an easy to access, convenient package. Bliss” (The Lady approves. - Balla)NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139.. - “Well I almost missed this off the Top 5 completely, then I remembered the rules about remasters etc as Nier Replicant is by far the best game I played in 2021 on any system and I now get why people love Yoko Taro with this phenomenal story, characters, music etc” (I haven't checked the 'spelling' of this game, so if it's wrong blame [REDACTED]. - Balla)Psychonauts 2 - “They bloody did it. They bloody did it. They picked up a game from nearly 15 years ago and made a really good sequel. Just brilliant. And actually funny. And somehow heartwarming. Excellent. And is a game I played in 2021.” It Takes Two“A great co-op adventure with a lot of variety on offer. A must play for anyone who likes having a good time” “Not as good as A Way Out” Knockout City - “Who knew video game dodgeball could be this fun.” Loop Hero - “I don’t need no man got my kicks for free” Lost Judgement - “A great setting change places the latest of the Yakuza spin off series takes place in a school leading to all kinds of hijinks as you advise the various clubs whilst trying to solve an interesting murder. A great way to while away your days.” Pulsar Lost Colony - “This is kind of janky and very dated, but actually does a pretty good job of replicating a galaxy full of Star Trek- (or Futurama-) like quests, and works quite well as a multiplayer game, with everyone taking a specific role on the spaceship. But is here because it is a game I played in 2021.” The Artful Escape - “I will talk about this game till I'm blue in the face, as I feel no one has played it, even though it is top-notch Annapurna.” Cryofall - “This is crap but came out of Early Access this year, so counts as a game I played in 2021.” ( - Balla)Rider's Republic - “Ubisoft tho” Splitgate - “It's portals but with PVP.” Wildermyth - “And we’ll ride still fired on the beat down low. I don’t need nobody got my honeys When I go round, baby, round round, spend the night on me." Halo Infinite - “Just for the Multiplayer” Humankind - “Without humankind, there would be no Sugarbabes” Kena: Bridge of Spirits - “One of the best looking games I've ever played with some real Pixar/DreamWorks vibes. Quite challenging too without feeling unfair, a sequel would have the potential to be something special.” masofdasForza Horizon 5 - “Vroom, Vroom” Little Nightmares 2 - “Imagine a world without the Sugarbabes" Resident Evil Village - “It's here to fill a slot. Has some fun stuff in it, I enjoyed watching my partner play it but didn't see it through myself.” I say: Even more scattered this year, from 23 games to 28 games (not including masofdas). There are several games I'm surprised charted so low - Halo Infinite, Forza, and Resi Village, for example - and one that I'm disappointed about in Psychonauts 2. It's one of two games I'm jealous about missing out on this year, the other being It Takes Two (and I may yet play that). I'm sorry about the faces but... yep, didn't feel like I was missing out on much else. p.s. Jim I played There Is No Game on Switch this year and you were right last year, it was great.
- How would 'nothing' have done?:
Yep, it would have come first. I didn't count the 'votes', but I did get some comments.
You say: “Even on Playstation I didn’t play anything that was released in 2021, bar eFootball which was a steaming pile of steam, given there was nothing there. If I actually bought it, it would probably be the Streets of Rage 4 DLC.” “I played a lot of backwards compatible/enhanced PS4 games last year looking through my library, so nothing new for 2021 besides the next 4.” “I actually didn't really play anything on my PS4 because I had so much to take up my time on the Switch!” “The last year has mainly been about the backlog.”
I say: Precisely nobody is interested in what I think about Nontendo gaming, so I'll stop there.

| Even though I know these 5 games are top notch (from what people say as I've only played two of them, and found top spot to be meh), it is superbland picks (think Nintendo won't be much different to be honest).
Don't think it's nothing that would have won but backlog, especially when look back as resolutions as well.
Also Balla, you can play Psychonauts 2 via the Cloud.

This is why lists & votes that create said lists are shit. |

| It's why I always like seeing what is like 10th, I'm sure BotW will be 1st come Switch vote and that's boring but 10th could be anything, which I find more intriguing.
And Balla last year did that great Switch list vote review thing, with a lot of detail about the games. |

| No, what's decided by these votes is definitively the correct and best option. I think we should all respect that. That said, Balla, I don't think you should include a Nontendo vote if you're not even gonna give games the time of day in your little "I say . . ." bit Surely you could muster up a little "Oh, I've seen the film and if this captures the heart and humour blah blah blah" even if it's not your bag? You come across like you're being forced to do something unpleasant but you're the number one guy who wants to do votes so if you decide to leave one out, nobody else would bemoan a little less to write. Practice self care, bud |

| Yeah I'd be up for binning the non-tendo vote to be fair. As a forum there's no strong enough direction to the point where something that enough people have played and nobody is that passionate about generally wins, plus it avoids the complex situation of "I didn't play it on Switch" etc.
I mean you look at Halo and Forza charting low, but that's no surprise considering there's like 3 of us with an Xbox here. |

| It could go for something else depending on who runs the vote, as could see Jay getting behind it, especially in a year where I can see an Elden Ring get 6 or 7 votes not 3, along with your Horizons in the mix.
You bring up Halo and Forza, feel its community thing as like you say both low due to few deciding to use Xbox Services on here. Then doing the Pod of War both high as all on Xbox Services, yet Nintendo games low as I only played, or watching Kinda Funny they had PlayStation stuff high.
Why I think just making it GAMING vote with a Top 10 each year, due to this community it will be mainly Nintendo games anyway like how Pod of War is mainly Xbox or Kinda Funny PlayStation. It also takes away did I or didn't I play on Switch, and if an Elden Ring does well it does it because it's THE BEST GAME, not best Nontendo or some bullocks like that. Along with no asterisk next to BotW2 *best game we could vote for as Elden Ring wasn't allowed as not on Nintendo, crap.

I don't want to sound like a broken record or that MS paying me, yet that issue about hardware the whole point of cloud gaming., so anyone on anything can play. Now if laptop a bit hit and miss if it be on that's fair, otherwise its a easy thing to try. |

I've actually been meaning to give the Xbox xloud stuff a go - might be my only way to play Halo. |

Yeah, that's why said Xbox Services not Xbox Console as that's how it's going and maybe the XStick might make sense for you. |

| It could be interesting to trial a top 10 overall gaming vote next time round. I definitely agree with a lot of the points you guys have made - our Nontendo gaming tastes are so scattered that it's difficult to get a top 5 vote that looks consistent as we all play on different machines and there's only four or five of us that play all the top releases to the same degree as we do on Nintendo machines. It means that the Nontendo vote can have something like a Wordle pop up where it's likely the two people that voted for it haven't played a thing on other machines, whereas that would never happen in our Nintendo vote. So aye, I can get behind a change to the format next time - think it'll be my turn too, so I'll see what I can rustle up. As for the actual results, props to whoever else voted for Returnal and Andrew Rice, you are dead to me for ignoring Endwalker. |

| I like the Nontendo votes. Sure, our interests are scattered, but I like seeing the games that get nods from various folks.
I don't see how merging the Nintendo and Nontendo votes will really do anything that addresses most of the criticisms being raised here. We'll just end up with a list led predominantly by Nintendo games, bottomed out by the same massively varied Nontendo selection that the Nontendo vote usually has, with a few nontendo blockbusters/indie darlings that enough of us played rising above the noise.
It's just that this time we'll have an absolutely enormous list of games that didn't make the cut, and I'm not sure how that is a good thing? I'm also not sure how this makes the lists any less predictable really, at least at the top end. The lower end of the list will just be as random as these votes tend to be anyway.
I would prefer to keep them separate. The Nintendo votes tend to be us weighing in on shared experiences, while the Nontendo vote lets us glimpse at what people liked outside of that sphere. |

| Why I used Elden Ring, as the example based on chat in February Release Thread as is that big game that a lot will jump on.
Get what you're saying and why used example of Kinda Funny PlayStation heavy, GNAMER Nintendo heavy due to who votes and the big game such as Elden Ring will get a nod maybe still, if just gaming.
Really, much like you still would like to vote in something of all games, not just be limited to one system because of reasons and like looking what did & didn't make the cut still as well.
