More Hyrule Warriors type spin-offs from this article on NL.

Pokken Fighters seems the most likely one we see first on the Wii U.

Pokken is a good shout. Inevitably my thoughts turn to the Nintendo franchises we haven't seen in a while (you know the ones), although to entice third parties in, I'm sure Nintendo have brought out their big guns. Maybe there'll be an announcement in the ND tonight? Hype is building to unreasonable levels! Shocked

Guys, I've got it. I know what they're going to do next.

Metroid...

...Vania.

Cool

But srsly, I get a little worried, as Hyrule Warriors seemed like a mis-step to me. But, as you said, Pokken makes much more sense.

Well Pokken is Tekken
Hyrule Warriors is Dynasty Warriors
So it's turn a Nintendo IP into another IP and I just can't think off one's I would want.

Please no Metroidvania, Konami can't even get castlevania right and I here Other M wasn't great. So no more spin-offs of that series.

Other M wasn't a spin-off though, just a bad Metroid game that tried to mesh the 3d & 2d styles of the series.

Plus aside from the monotonous voice acting and bad story to go with it, it was a great game.

I agree - when I think back I actually enjoyed the game. But remembering the custscenes, it's almost like... a headache is applied to the game.

I'm looking forward to some of these spin-offs. Something different for a change. I genuinely think the Wii U will be the console that hosts the much dreamed of Mario/Sonic platformer crossover. I felt the waters were tested with the Yoshi and Zelda DLC in last year's Sonic Lost World. The positive response to that (coupled with the facts that Nintendo and SEGA's relationship appears to be very robust, that the sales for the M&S Olympic games have been consistantly dropping since the first one and that the Wii U needs a massive boost itself) makes me think that the time is right for this to happen.

I didn't say anything at the time about the spin-offs subject, because I couldn't think of anything.  Super Smash Bros. Fantasy, maybe?  The Wonderful 151, featuring the original Pokémon?  Genji: Days of the Monado?  (Okay, I'm being silly now.)

No: wait.  I've got it.

Phoenix Wright vs. Kyle Hyde.  Optimism vs. cynicism, interrogation vs. evidence, and Mila vs. Maya would be a great clash.  Oh goodness I want it! Grin

Anyway, I actually came into the thread to note that it's the Wii U's second anniversary coming up (in two weeks-ish), and Nintendo Life have given it a C- so far.  They do focus rather more on sales than on how good the console actually is, though; I'd probably give it a B- myself.  It has one 9/10 big game so far in my eyes, in MK8 (possibly another in Bayo 2, and I'm aware that I didn't like Pikmin 3 for its genre), and two downloadables.  But the eShop aside, I seem to have fewer games for it at this point in its life than any Nintendo console apart from the N64 (but they were bona fide classics, mostly).

Thoughts?  Grades of your own?

I did give get a skim over and they do bring up sells talk a bit, maybe it's should of got marked out of 10 in categories such as sells, retail games, downloads and other.

But I don't want to go to much into as I'm going to do a opinion piece on the 1st year of all three 8th gen consoles out and will touch more on it then.

Gamespot did this is it time to buy a Wii U second anniversary video

Taking sales out of the equation - because they're shite patter, and should be a banhammerable offense - I'd rate the Wii U as a B- too. I think there's a decent variety all-around, there's been plenty of bargains to be had, and it's had just about enough out for it in those two years to keep us interested.

It's been grim at times, and sometimes expectations haven't been met, but my list of 9/10 games is a bit longer: Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, Rayman Legends, Bayonetta 2, DK:TF and Lego City are near-essential. For me, Mario Kart 8 is nigh on faultless: a ten out of ten. I've never been bored of the Wii U, and I'm fairly optimistic about what Nintendo has announced for 2015. It's got enough going for it to make me not entertain the idea of getting a PS4.

When people say that 2014 has been an "amazing" year for Wii U, I'm guessing they bought one this year, which speaks volumes about how good the catalogue of Wii U exclusives is right now.

As for me, this year has been a disappointment compared to 2013. Big releases have been few and far between. Third party support is non-existent. Shovel Knight aside, the high profile indie games have yet to emerge.

For Wii U in general, while we have Zero Jones' thread for that (about recommending one), but like Phillips there's enough to keep me happy and keep me from buying a PS4/One for now. Nintendo showing their commitment to the thing at E3 left me happy, and next year's lineup is great.

I agree gaming a whole been a disappointment but Wii U has has had far better 2014 then 13. Also I do disagree about the indies/downloads as me and Jas talked about it in the Indie Failure thread and these past 6 months have been great I don't think the Wii U ever get a high profile indie like No Man's Sky but I don't think it needs one.

I agree on the indies: the Wii U's had plenty, including lots of good ones, and big multiplat ones too.  No absolute killer must-have indies (although I could put forward good cases for CoL and GSTCE), but they're a luxury when the Wii U arguably has more killer must-have retail games than the other two. (Also NMS' procedural generation makes me grimace.)

As for sales, yes they're boring, but I can't say they're completely irrelevant when I made my grade.  Both because I want Nintendo to have enough money to carry on doing what they do so well, and because I'm (not so) secretly a massive Ninty fanboy who wants them to WIN THE CONSOLE WAR AND SMASH THE OTHER PLATFORMS INTO THE DUST RAAAARGH.  They're just not the main factor, and maybe contributed to the - on my B, if that.

I was in two minds about the indies, it's just that when the system's getting indie titles that I can play on literally anything, there's less to cheer about. I'm more disappointed that the best games to come are distinctly 2015 now, rather than what we got this year.

That's debatable. SSBU? MK8? The Bayos? I think the Wii U's had a jolly good year, myself: maybe not overflowing with games, but with some really high quality performers.

Oh, I meant the best indie titles are yet to come: a lot of them were pushed back to 2015. 90's Arcade Racer, Affordable Space Adventures, Gunman Clive 2 to name just a few. And all the indie ports which I expected this year failed to materialise.

As for Nintendo's lineup, agreed. I still prefer 2013's, though, even if Mario Kart 8 is my game of the year. Nintendo were putting out a first party game nearly every month, and there was far more variety to it all as a result, even if quality wasn't as high across the board (Game & Wario and Wii Party U are probably two easy suspects).

Ah, I see. Agreed there. Although that said, I still think it's had a pretty good year. Maybe I'm just not used to dabbling in the indie space, but we've had the following this year that have interested me (even if they didn't all pull it off) (LIST INCOMING):

Teslagrad
Scram Kitty
Guacamelee!
Child of Light
(okay, not an indie)
Thomas was Alone
Stealth Inc. 2

and of course Shovel Knight.

I don't know whether you and others were expecting one great downloadable a month or more? But that seems pretty okay to me.

Point taken. I'd even add Stick it to the Man to the list.

It's a good lineup, my main problem is I'd either had played those games before elsewhere, or I could play those games elsewhere (Scram Kitty and Shovel Knight aside)

The problem with the latter is that other platforms have simply had a better year for new indie titles, Wii U isn't getting the lion's share of it all. It's great that titles like Stick it to the Man add GamePad-specific functionality though. Makes me wish I played it on Wii U instead of Vita.

Stealth Inc. 2's exclusive as well, I believe; but I get what you mean. But of that list, only GTSCE and Thomas were out on another console (not including Steam) well before they hit Nintendo shores. So we're getting multiplats, finally! Just the small ones.

2015 should be good, though! Heck, I shouldn't even be complaining about this year's Wii U indie lineup when 3DS's has faltered so much compared to what came before it. Apart from Siesta Fiesta and Shovel Knight, what have we actually received that isn't shovelware???

Sadly Stealth Inc. 2's been rated for other (PS4, PS3, Vita, Xbox One) so a release is imminent for them. Curve Studios were pretty clever with making it a timed Nintendo exclusive: get the interest of Nintendo fans and Nintendo's support to maximise sales on Nintendo platforms, then release it on other platforms later.

Had they released on Sony first you'd undoubtedly get the group that refuses to buy the game until it goes on PS Plus, or it might launch on PS Plus, devaluing the game for non subscribers. And the Nintendo version wouldn't do nearly as well.

Fronk you must of been playing a different Wii U then me as Nintendo published at retail 14 games year one on the U and I would only say about 5 were of real quality and one of those was a HD remake & a other being a DLC game thing.

This year okay we've had 8 games from them but I would say out of them 7 have all been of decent quality and if we go by the rumours Hyrule Warriors started of the whole one game month thing which should continue into 2015 (yes December has nothing but SMASH did come out the end and Sonic at the start of November), I would sooner have the 8 games from Nov 2013 - Nov 14 then Nov 12 - 13 and go for a more quality 8 then 14 that includes rubbish.

On Indies/Downloads Year 2 the U has had 59 games and a few more if you want to count F1 & Falling Skies etc okay quite a bit are on other systems but you can't say it's not had anything but is missing a big indie console exclusive.
