| I think I'll probably be leaving this one. From what Nintendo have said it doesn't sound like Bowser's Furry is going to be very long, and despite the rollercoaster of emotions I went on over the course of this thread there's no way I liked SM3DW enough to play it, or pay full price for it, again. I like the look of what they've done with it, but at the same time... the people who worked on this could've been making this world as Odyssey DLC. |

Ahh that's disappointing. Still, I'll try the multiplayer as it'll be a fresh experience for me. I'm looking forward to the single player too. Super Mario 3D World is easily the Wii U game I've played most often in the last five years and a faster, even-nicer-looking version of it on a handheld screen that'll do it justice is something I'm quite excited about. |

- This thread is well worth rereading by the way. Also, bump time:
I actually went and did that while I was supposed to be working earlier this week. It's quite a rollercoaster. At the start, we're all describing our ideal new Mario game and we basically describe Odyssey. Then 3D World is announced and there's a feeling of general disappointment. After a good trailer, people become much more positive about it. Finally it releases and we're all very pleasantly surprised, but still kind of wishing they'd made something else. - Balladeer wrote:

I'm in the boat that I'd probably pick it up for another go anyway, so the addition of Bowser's Fury feels like a real treat. - Quote :

That's not how it works of course, this isn't a zero sum game, but B's F looked so Odyssey that it is a bit of a disappointment it's tied to SM3DW's systems and controls, not Odyssey's gorgeous alternative. |

| I feel like Balla kinda as I really liked 3D World and yes I would like to play the new content even if it's short as it be good, but I don't want to pay RRP for a game that's pretty much the same as the one I played on Wii U. |

| I'm absolutely up for playing this again as I can't remember much of it anyway and online play sounds like a good prospect, fingers crossed it works though.
Then there's Bowser's Fury, that looks exceptional, I feel like it could be a little short perhaps but I like the idea of potentially speed running it if you're given some sort of time for it. |

What goes around comes around. You're right that it wouldn't be zero-sum, and no doubt the same thing in Odyssey would take more time and effort: the graphical style is more complicated and you'd need to integrate captures. It would have been worth it, though (hypothetically speaking). |

I'm all for short games at the minute & I could accept something that's like two to four hours long, a good sweet spot though would be 8 - 10 hours. |

| I wouldn't mind if it was a short game as I would buy that, but it's not it's part of a £40+ game I've played, and maybe they could have done it as Odyssey DLC a I game don't own anyway either but would keep likes of Balla happier.
Looking at the numbers though of the ports from Wii U and how many extra copies sold on Switch, Nintendo likely looked at the others and gone we spent this much to make SM3DW for Wii U, and we can still sell another XXX on Switch instead of going lets make DLC for 18.99m copies of Odyssey.
WiiU 8.45m Mario Kart 8 NS 28.99m extra 343% WiiU 5.81m NSMBUD NS 8.32m extra 143% WiiU 1.71m DKCTF NS 2.65m extra 155% WiiU 1.41m Cap Toad NS 1.44m extra 102% WiiU 1.37m Pokken NS 1.71m extra 125% WiiU 1.34m BotW NS 19.74m extra 1475% WiiU 1.26m Hyrule NS 0.46m extra 36% WiiU 0.86m Bayo 2 0.57m NS extra 66%
Couldn't find Pikmin 3 or TMS Switch numbers, likely other ports I'm missing as well.
WiiU 5.86m SM3DW based on the avg of another 305% more likely 138% because of the BotW silliness, SM3DW will sell 17.87m or 8.1m on Switch at £40+ a go.

If that happens I'd probably change my mind on buying it. |

| Went back and read through the thread, we were all really positive about this weren't we, it's nice to see. I've also forgotten so much about this game, firstly I completed it with 4 players to my surprise, I knew I played it but to get all the way through and before I finished in single player is impressive. Also seen a mention of Ghosts being in the game for speedruns which sounds cool. A few choice quotes: - masofdas wrote:

| It just looks wrong always same if I see eShop not spelt eShop and same goes for numbers instead of roman numerals for a Final Fantasy for instance. |

| I'm only having a moment because I literally do projecting results from other results as my job. - CAUTION - NUMBERS WITHIN:
The first thing is: 8 data points is a lousy set that's dramatically shifted by outliers, so any predictions need to be really broad. A simple average is a lousy metric to use because it gives no weighting to games that might have sold more or games that might be more relevant to the current case. At the very least you want to compare against a weighted average, which is total over total: removing BotW (correctly) that's 211% extra, which still suggests that something's wrong because it's bloody high compared to the nearest comparisons. Next step: checking the data. BotW is obviously an outlier because it released at the same time on both, and Mas correctly excluded it, although that 305% shouldn't even be near the final results. However, you also have Mario Kart 8 which was released in the first fervour of Switch frenzy, and (anecdotally maybe, but industry knowledge is important) picked up several purchases among those who now wouldn't touch a minimum-effort Wii U port, like me. Exclude. Bayo 2 is a very different sort of game to SM3DW, much nicher; and arguably so is Hyrule Warriors. I'll at least be excluding Bayo 2. That brings our simple average to 118% and our weighted to 132%. This is going to end up being very similar isn't it. Are there any games we want to give more weight to? Captain Toad and New Super Mario Bros. U feel like the closest to SM3DW, so give them double weight in our averages. Simple average becomes 120%, and weighted becomes 133%. You could arguably reduce the weight of Hyrule Warriors too, but that has minimal effect anyway. So what have we got? 133%, which isn't too far off, but still a relatively large spread among our 5 games. Looking at them, about the only thing I can say with confidence is that we'll see between 100% and 150% extra sales. 6m to 9m, then, at £40 a pop. 138%, even if it lands near my calcs, is far too accurate a number for what data we have.
Lies, damn lies, and statistics. Anyway, I think I may just have written the most boring post on GNamer. You're all welcome. |
