| Updated to something along those lines in the OP. It's between Meteos Disney and Yoshi's Cookie. |

| Everywhere I looked has had it down as a puzzler. Best ask someone who's played it though, I reckon. |

| Puzzle sounds fair to me, you have to work out what to do to the bubbles to carry em around and get through the level so I think that suits it. |

| Soul Bubbles is one of those games I didn't really have a set definition of, but thinking about it it's a puzzler. And it's most definitely in my list. I'll have my votes in by the weekend. Still mulling my choices over! |

| Hmm I probably wouldn't say Puzzler, I did consider it but now I think about it I don't know where it would lie, manly games I'd say. |

| Speaking of which, that reminds me - I'll do my utmost to get the votes out at 6pm this Sunday, but I'm moving out to my new flat on the Monday so will be in the process of packing up Sunday night. I should manage, but just a heads up if I'm a bit late! |

Not too keen on Meteos, personally. See also: Polarium. |

| Well, it's time for the first results post in The BIG DS Voting Thread. Hold onto your hats ladies and gentleman, let's do this. Thanks to the eleven of you who voted this week, great opening turn out. Fifth Place - - Spoiler:
Professor Layton and the Curious Village - 14 points (First places - 1)You say - " Puzzles that actually puzzle, and a quirky but charming graphical style." " What an amazing game. This forum has long debated the ending but I loved it with all my heart." " Even though I couldn't get into this like some others clearly can the puzzles themselves were still cleverly put together." I say - Get used to this phrase from me folks - it's one I've always admired from afar, should have played by now, but haven't yet. The animation looks gorgeous and the blend of well put together puzzles and story seems to have enamoured many of you. Fourth Place - - Spoiler:
Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes - 14 points (First places: 2)You say - "Wait, a campaign in a puzzler!? Yes. And somehow, it works." "RPG? Puzzle game? It doesn't matter - it's just great. A beauty to play." "The puzzling and RPG elements are well welded together and the result is many an hour of a gamer's time taken. Top stuff." "Top marks for this wonderful game that everyone (including you Stu!) should play!"I say - This seems to be a trend in this vote: anything that includes a bit of story with its puzzling action seems to get high praise from you lot. It does seem to be an interesting amalgamation of genres judging from screenshots and gameplay, I thought it was an RTS at first glance. Also to note is the fact this pipped Layton to fourth place by the extra first place it received. Third Place - - Spoiler:
Tetris DS - 17 points (First places: 1)You say - "The puzzler that keeps on giving, plenty to do and that's before you even touch the brilliant multiplayer mode. "Good old Tetris. With a few extra modes. And whatnot. It's great, but it just isn't the same as playing GB Tetris." "Brilliant version of Tetris"I say - This game ended up on most people's lists in one form or another: it was my 4th place. A brilliant and complete iteration of Tetris, and anyone who doesn't like Tetris is a big willy. Second Place - - Spoiler:
Picross DS - 18 points (First places: 0)You say - "Puzzling at its purest and finest." "Who doesn't like a bit of picross? Answer: No one." "Perhaps the best basis for a puzzle game, makes Sudoku look like a wordsearch." "How can something so simple eat so much time? A classic and classy puzzle concept that I spent a week on. Literally."I say - No one speaking! Picross has never been my cup of tea, but I totally get the appeal and it's no surprise to me it's placed highly on this list. Interesting to note that it got here without any first places either. And the Carol Vorderman Prize for Brain-Busting DS Puzzler goes to...- Spoiler:
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective - 25 points (First places: 1)You say - "It's a game about time travel and possessing objects, and yet the story is one of the few games to actually converge into a completely believable tale. "There's no way this can make any sense" - and yet it all does.
"Great characters, great animation, great puzzles, great story, and a GREAT plot twist at the end."
"Another Shu Takumi triumph. He beautifully weaves together puzzle and story - just like here.
"One of the best stories I've enjoyed in a video game with some rather unique gameplay, just a tad linear."
"Easily my favourite retail DS game, great story, characters & its just amazing to see the levels unfold like a crazy ghost vs assassins version of mouse trap."
"The story was compelling, the puzzles fun to solve and it quickly worked its way towards to top of my most loved DS games pile."I say - Another game on this list that I've never played, but one judging by this response that I really ought to. From the gameplay I've watched, it seems to be a very unique puzzler with a great story going off your comments, so it seems we have a worthy winner here! Honourable Mentions: (games voted by more than one person are in italics, games which were someone's first choice are in bold, game which were voted by more than one person and were someone's first choice are in red) - Spoiler:
Another Code: Two Memories, Professor Layton and the Lost Future, Super Scribblenauts, Scribblenauts (my top pick), Meteos, Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords, Sujin Taisen, Professor Layton and Pandora's Box, Picross 3D, Puzzle League DS, Mario vs DK: Mini-Land Mayhem, Mr Driller: Drill Spirits, Zoo Keeper, Soul Bubbles, Dr Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain?, Exit DS, Pokemon Link, Primrose Dishonourable Mentions: - Spoiler:
Professor Layton and the Curious Village: "Standard Layton fair, let down by the worst ending in the series."
Scribblenauts: "Use a jetpack and Cthulhu to get through everything. Solutions to puzzles felt too vague to be fun to solve."
Tetris DS: "Tetris is duuuuuuuuuuuuulllllllllllll."
Primrose: "Boring."
Meteos: Disney Magic: "It's Meteos with all the strategy removed. Why would you do that?"
Puyo Pop Fever: "The makeweight in a 2 for £20 DS game deal. The other game was Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, though, so it was lose:win."
Flower, Sun and Rain: "It's bollocks, just don't bother. It looks hideous, plays badly and is one of the worst games I've played."
Professor Layton and the Spectre's Call: "The story was bad, the twist was pathetic and stupid. Sorry Layton, you let the side down a bit with this one."
So there we have it! Apologies for being a little bit late putting this up folks. This week we're voting on MANLY GAMES *flames shoot out*. That's shooters, racing games, and fighting games to the uninitiated. Get your votes in now folks! |

| I didn't expect Ghost Trick to be number 1 but it's certainly well up there. A tad dissapointed Tetris did as well as it did. I love the DS version of Tetris but I wouldn't have put it in my top 5 (better than the GB version too, whoever said that must be mad!). I personally thought Lost Future was the best Layton game.
I really should find a copy of Meteos and Polarium one day and see what it's all about.
I'm really not sure I can find 5 games this week even with 3 genres... |

| Meteos was robbed! Curious Village and Tetris DS placing over it is insane. (Yes, the first three dishonourables are mine.) Good call on the other placings, though, especially Ghost Trick. Needs a sequel badly, that one. Anyway, a good week for the old DS.
Onto manly games, then. I can think of four - there must have been some good top-down shmups on the DS that I can't recall, surely?
Pre-post EDIT: Agreed about Lost Future. The only game in the series with a decent ending. |

| Ah. Ghost Trick. I should have voted for that. Incidentally, none of the five games I voted for placed in the forum's top five. You've all got terrible taste. |

| Contra IV was on DS, right? Also Balla, your prediction that you and Phillips would be the only ones to remember Meteos was unfortunately true. |

| A great start to the proceedings, folks! Ghost Trick was a clear, deserving winner for me. A solid endorsement for Flower, Sun & Rain there, I see. I've never even had the urge to try that one. It's unsurprising to see such a variety of games make the honourable mentions list. DS is flushed with just about everything but 3D platformers, racers and brawlers. Incidentally: can we vote for import games, Jay? I suspect I won't be the only one to have at least one import choice in one particular week. Still haven't played Might & Magic. Balla: Off the top of my head, I can think of Nanostray, Nanostray 2, possibly Bangai-O Spirits, Space Invaders Extreme and Space Invaders Extreme 2. So, racing games are lumped into this week's vote. I wouldn't call Mario Kart DS and Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing 'manly'. |

Such an underrated gem. :hipster: And as it was left out of my comment, and he's a perfect way to transition from puzzle week to MANLY week... - Spoiler:

Really? This is as manly as Arnie battling Chuck Norris atop a burning helicopter:
