| - A tale of woe that goes back many hours:
So my exam marking came in on Thursday morning. I was still at work on Thursday and Friday, so there wasn't much time to get through the qualifying questions and get really started. Jo was working Friday evening, so I planned to sit down and get myself qualified then, and get some proper marking done. When I sat down and turned on the laptop, though, the router's "I'm happily working" light wasn't on. So I got investigating: the router help program said that there was something wrong with the cabling; there was. The cable from the splitter to the wall was broken (the plastic clippy bit had snapped in half somehow). I legged it to Maplin's to get a replacement - the only one in stock was a 3m cable, replacing one that was 12cm at best. Yay. And I walked back home. Total loss of time: 1 hour. Attaching this cable was easy as pi. I refreshed the router program and it said, "Still bosted, mate". Perplexed, I checked the cable from the router to the splitter and it was broken too. The plastic clippy bit had snapped in half somehow. Not feeling able to show my face at Maplin's again, I hotfooted it over to Curry's PC World Carphone Warehouse Pets At Home Halford's IKEA, or whatever it's calling itself these days, to get a second new cable. Then, somewhat fatigued, I waited for a bus home. Total loss of time: 1.35 hours. Once that cable was attached, the router's happy face appeared and I got qualified to mark. I marked one single proper question that night. I've marked over 300 since, with over 700 to go. I'm going on holiday tomorrow. Help.

Enjoy your holiday, bossman! It needs it - it's seven years old this year, which is about 896 in laptop years. And I am enjoying it, thank you! It's a lovely place we're in and I am, of course, with my lovely wife. |

| I've griped about it before and I'll do so again: next door neighbours who seem to think it entirely appropriate in a small neighbourhood to get smashed every saturday and spend the rest of the evening talking extremely loudly with their repugnant accents* and playing music so loudly that even being on the other side of the unit with several shut doors it still sounds like it's several meters away from the window.
Safe to say after the last few weekends of this I'm starting to frequently daydream lovely little fantasies involving things such as localised meteors wiping them and their abode from the map.
*I say repugnant because there are several australian accents. There's the famous one everyone knows, and then there's a very low class one that sounds extremely irritating and low class, sounds especially bad when combined with the higher pitches of a female voice, which produces an effect that sounds not entirely dissimilar to an adult trying to impersonate a whining child whose every sentence has the same intonations as a petulantly sounded complaint.
Ah well, the silver lining is I suspect the landlord and various relatives focus their irritation on more worthy subjects now. Just have to grit the teeth and repeat "only five more months" mentally. |

| If we're talking Saturday evenings, I'm afraid I cannot sympathise with you. That is the most acceptable occasion to loudly socialise. If they were doing it on like a Tuesday, different story. |

| Agreed with that, but once it hits the wee hours of the morning, I will get a bit salty if they're still making a racket and I'm trying to sleep. Just go to a bar or a club, please! |

| What is and is not acceptable conduct is determined on the area in question frankly. This is not a "noisy" street (lived in plenty of them growing up as a child, I know what they're like), this is a street that is home to either older people or extremely quiet people (such as myself). It's the sort of street where the majority are either in bed by nine or winding down for a quiet evening at that time. Which is exactly why their conduct is unacceptable. And if they can't abide by such a street then I'll be blunt, they should move to a street more in line with their expectations (of which there are plenty, this is a working class town). I know for a fact they keep at least two of the neighbours up at hours they would otherwise be asleep, and the rest of us are forced to have their noise pumped directly into our entire dwellings.
I'll be blunt: there's having a fun saturday and there's being a absolute nuisance to everyone else, and I doubt for even a second that they need to be the noisy nuisances they are to enjoy a saturday evening. They have a nice three bedroom house of reasonable size, there is absolutely no reason for them to bring their stereo system in to their back garden and turning it up to maximum volume meters away from no less than four dwellings. No, that's not enjoying a saturday evening, that's just being a pack of arseholes to everyone else in the vicinity. And yes, I do recognise that people on occasions have parties and functions, two people deliberately making as much noise pollution as possible every saturday would not fall under that criteria. |

| I'll do a proper TonyPang at some point this week, however: yer men Athrun and Jay are bang on when it comes to making a noise in the small hours. Simply put, if you're making noise past 11 on a Sunday-Thursday or midnight on Friday-Saturday, you're an arse. No ifs or buts. You're just not considering your fellows. You're devoid of empathy in favour of your selfish self. Just because you can avoid having to get up early next morning, doesn't mean everyone can. (A reminder that some people have to work over the weekend!) Attempt to put yourself in your neighbours' shoes, and be quiet after those aforementioned times. |

Is this the Kath and Kim Melbourne-esque one when words like "no" seem to have 12 "e"s on the end? |

| Dontcha just love going to the dentist. Most will likely think me foolhardy due to my phobia of pain (and needles, duh, but mostly pain), but after being told two weeks back I wouldn't need aesthetic to get a teeny cavity sorted (which is largely true, I didn't need it as it wasn't too deep), only to find it's actually a wee bit larger than expected and having to stop things just before the pain. It wasn't pain pain, but got damn close and I'll tell ya right now that was not fun. Almost regret not just taking the needles, but call me paranoid however past experiences with other local aesthetic has taught me it doesn't do shit.
Best bit was finally seeing the x-rays of the jaws. I've got four wisdom teeth in the top of my mouth that need extracting as if they ever grow at all they'll set the entire area off! Fun news! Thank god I won't have to be awake for that one and the waiting list is 2+ years as they're all still in the gums.
So yeah, not exactly in the best of moods right now. |

| Ouch, sir! Not good. Mind you, I've not been to the dentist for over ten years. I never registered with a new dentist when I moved and, well, that's just the way it's been. I like to think I take good care of them - I still have some of my baby teeth in my lower jaw, because there were never adult teeth underneath to replace them - but toothache will catch up with me one day, I'm sure. It's one of the worst pains I've experienced. Hope everything is sorted out with the minimum of fuss and expenditure. |

| T'woud be nice, alas I won the genetic lottery having six wisdom teeth in total with four of them in the top of the jaw, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if extracting the bastards is going to cost a lot and be fairly complicated. Ah well, I'm more concerned about the two teeth that are now suddenly reacting badly to cold water and hot foods, either the enamel's gone or they're going to need something done, and alas that will require injections.
On another note sounded like the bogans next door tried to kill one another in this weeks far-too-late evening-noise-making or something. Lots of shouting of the deranged "I've had so much to drink I'm barely better than an angry wild animal" variety. Naturally this happened three times over the evening, starting from around one in the morning. Sounded like the cops got called in by the time the second one happened, which is probably for the best since things sounded like they were only a step away from getting violent. |

| Athers, I know I can't speak for every case, but re. wisdom teeth, if this makes you feel any better: I think this is the sort of thing they're got down to a fine art now. I had all 4 of mine out in (checks date) 2006 (oh shit, I am old), and despite my mouth needing constant adjustment in my teens (my teeth were healthy, but "Wherever and whenever"), it was pretty painless once the anaesthetic did its job. The only real pain in the backside was the tablets and mouthwash for the following week, and the acceptance that my pillow might be a bit bloody when I wake up. |

| On Thursday my wife went to Manchester on the train. We parked on the station car park and stayed there for twelve minutes on the drop-off and seventeen on the pick-up. Both times it cost £12: that's twenty four pounds for under half an hour of keeping our car on a particular piece of tarmac. The anger still has not died down. |
