Like I said, suggestions to improve that particular award are more than welcome. Not sure if having a vote for each platform would be the way to do it, especially since so many of the "big" games are cross-platform and we have relatively few MS gamers anyway; but it's an idea! Aye I realise why it was done you big dirty Nintendo fanboy I'm kidding of course and if I think of a better suggestion than the one I said I will be happy to suggest it. - mas wrote:

So would that be one award section together or two separate ones? I honestly don't see how that makes it more focused than just other formats especially since the number of exclusive can vary year to year. |

| Two awards,
Of course it makes it makes it more focused as this year PS4 has 27, ONE has 16 coming that means there's a least 43 games we could vote in Exclusive Game Not on a Nintendo System Award.
And then you would have the Cross-Platform Award which would have 43 less games in it and hopefully make it more focused. |

| Hmm....I suppose but wasn't the main reason for the other format section being like that as it was less work to count the votes? (I remember balla saying something like this anyway) Doing it by each console/system just seems the most logical & fair way to me especially when we allow folk to vote for a game in say the Nintendo category but they may have played it on PC etc. |

| But if we did each console only Drunka & Andy will be voting in the ONE award, well I might have one by this time next year. It seems a bit silly to have such a award with so few people to vote in it, there might as well be a dreamcast award where I only voted for Alice's Mum. And if you don't do a ONE award due to lack of people alongside PS4 etc Drunka might go but I wanted to vote fro Halo 5 and he's got nowhere to vote for it. |

| Wait, Dangaronpa 1 counted!? Crap, I thought it was a 2013 game, would've given it first place over a honorable mention if I'd known. Sorry Monokuma, I have failed you! - Stu_the_great wrote:

Good to see plenty of obscurities in there, though. I don't know the first thing about the Dangaronpa franchise. Bunch of crazy anime stereotypes are locked in a high school by an evil murderous technologically advanced bear and told if they want out they have to kill one of their classmates and get away with it. Awesome mysteries, massive despair, intriguing character moments, and insane executions ensue. That's the highly abbreviated version, the larger version would involve some unavoidable spoilers and a couple of text walls. It's a great point and click adventure and I highly recomend it to anyone who has a vita, especially if they liked games like Persona 4. |

| It's the home stretch, gents! For now, your second gaming award: The A Link Between Worlds Award for 3DS Game of the Year (14 votes, including one person mentioning only one game, and two people with two)(Someone did actually vote for ALBW at first, before being informed that it came out last year! Hopefully its all-commanding position at the top of the award will make up for that, sir!) Bronze Medal- Spoiler:
Fantasy Life (8 points, two firsts/one second)"Although you're the hero, the game makes you feel like a small cog in a big mechanism. And it's full of Little King's Story-esque Japanese silly humour. Good times." "I like making and fighting things" "So charming, so punny." Silver Medal- Spoiler:
Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire (19 points, four firsts/three seconds/one third)"Bringing joy into the world of Hoenn (for me - I know some of y'all loved it before this!)." "The Phanphies in the room are the remake's ease and the tedious Wally-based catching tutorial (and "too much water", natch). Those aside, this is a fine update to my favourite generation of Pokémon games: great locations, great monsters, great music, and now great visuals too. And I haven't reached the Delta Episode yet, but apparently that makes things even better." "Well, its Pokemon. There hasn't been a huge ammount for the 3DS this year but this game has swallowed up a lot of hours of my life, like I always knew it would." And the winner is...- Spoiler:
Super Smash Bros. for 3DS (22 points, four firsts/three seconds/four thirds)"A fine game of Smash on the bus, entirely superseded by the arrival of its bigger brighter brother. Might have been the game of the year, but for that." "A technical achievement beyond compare for the humble 3DS. Also, plays really well." "But it's not the WiiU version." "I also enjoyed punching/kicking people off screen here." "It’s the best handheld fighter of all time, and even better than SSB Wii U in a couple of key areas." "Sure, this was just a preview for the Wii U game but having Smash on the dash was a great feeling and this has livened up a couple of dull lunch breaks and bus rides." Fourth Place- Spoiler:
Kirby Triple Deluxe (6 points, one first/one second/one third)"In a better year for the console, this might not have made the cut. As it is, it's colourful, cheerful, and filled with secrets. Also introduces the copy ability where Kirby has a pair of giant bells. No, bells." "Second only to Epic Yarn in the series, but to nothing in 2014 on the 3DS. I like Kirby more when the games are a bit more creative and forward-thinking, but this is superbly crafted and massively enjoyable." "The 3D effect is amazing." Fifth Place- Spoiler:
Tomodachi Life (5 points, two seconds/one third)"For the open-minded and curious, this was more than welcome in a summer of f**k-all else." "I looked away from the game to see what was on TV; I looked back and I was proposing to Nigella Lawson. She said yes. GOTY 10/10. (P.S. in case I'm put on a "concern" list, this did happen in the game, but it's not the actual reason I put this in; it's the constant wackiness)." "So, it's a little homophobic. So, there's not really any gameplay to it. At the end of the day, this is just the funniest thing." Highly Commended- Spoiler:
Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (four points, one first/one third) "Seeing Phoenix and Maya back again reminds me what a great pairing they are."
Shovel Knight (four points, one first/one third) "I knew this was a shoe-in for game of the year before I'd even played it myself. Wonderfully precise, simple gameplay, a fun premise and setting, goofy characters, loads of whimsical references to games of yore. All wrapped up in a wonderful looking/sounding retro aesthetic. I'm well on my way into this, and I will be genuinely sad once the party is over. The finest non-retro retro game I've ever played." "...only here because I’ve played it on Wii U and demo of it on 3DS that it plays the same and is worthy of 3rd spot."
Mario Golf: World Tour (four points, two seconds) Commended- Spoiler:
Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth (three points, three thirds) "A brilliant 3DS debut for the Persona series."
Rune Factory 4 (three points, one first) "I like making, dating, farming and fighting things" I says- Spoiler:
While I would agree that the 3DS didn't have the best year, you wouldn't think it looking at the list. Smash and Pokémon, not to mention everything else! There's certainly enough to vote for if you look for it.
I could have predicted the top two before the voting began, though not what order they'd come in (and indeed ORAS always threatened to usurp SSB3D's slim lead but never quite managed it); but I had no idea what would snatch third. I haven't got on hugely well with FL so far, but with my other 3DS games finished (or, in SSB3D's case, superseded), I'll gladly have another go at trying to see what y'all see in it.
Some worthy games further down, too!

| It's a decent list yeah but SSB3D now has it's big brother out & pokemon is a remake that it makes it feel it's not as good as year it could of been for the 3DS, but there's a few games there like FL, RF4 & Kirby which all do peak my interest.
SK could come nowhere Stu as you think Wii U vote is between Kart, SMASH and Bayo 2 but in what order is the question. |

- Yes it's a blanket statement, but how is it possibly wrong?
Because you're dismissing an entire art style solely on the basis of one average looking game. It's looking at a Call of Duty game, saying "ugh, too brown", and deciding that every 3D game with a lot of graphical power behind it must look ugly. There's going to be ugly games regardless of how much graphical power it's leaning on. Take for example, Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery. Now, this is game wholly reliant on pixel art. But if you take a look at this, I don't see how anyone can dismiss it as anything but bloody gorgeous. Something would be lost in taking that same game and transferring it to a 3D environment. It's the same as saying that Bioshock Infinite could still work as a 2D game - it couldn't. So much of the grandeur of the environments would be lost. Using pixel art is, yes, often a money-saving tactic for indie developers. But it's also often a legitimate stylistic choice because their game couldn't work as well in a 3D environment. Pretty games are pretty games and ugly games are ugly games, regardless if they're handdrawn 2D, studio-developed powerful 3D, pixel art or a bloody Surrealist love letter to Salvador Dali - it doesn't matter what form they come under. I'm honestly surprised Balla - I've never known you to place so much worth on graphics. I could give two tosses about your opinion on Cave Story at the end of the day, it's your opinion - but I do have to argue with you on this, as I wholly disagree. (No comment, just appreciation.)

=Dear Daisy, GNamer Romantic Mishaps Thread (two votes)"I take a little bit of pleasure from reading this actually. Quite a range of stories with some touching moments." "This past year has been the longest time I've ever spent as a single pringle, and I am crap at the single life. I'm tired, I'm tired of loving with nobody to love and having you guys to chat to is a big help. We can all be alone together."

I thought it brought back an element of the forum which GNamer could never have: “The Magazine”." I says- Spoiler:
I don't think I've ever put so much effort into any forum post as I did into BtH, so I'm chuffed that two of you thought it was worth voting for and didn't forget it after half the year. Thanks gents. Back into unbiased host mode, though, I can't deny that the TRP thread was a great one. Yes yes, it is my thread, but if I hadn't made it somebody else would have and it would have been equally great: nothing to do with me, just high-quality talk about a high-quality, laugh-out-loud funny, podcast. As for the Dear Daisy thread, I haven't posted in there much, because I prefer to keep my LONELYness to myself (I too am crap at the single life); but it sounds like it's been a heartwarming centre of togetherness in the face of adversity, and that can only be a good thing.

As for the three winners, those are three thoroughly deserving threads. Dear Daisy has been very helpful to me, I wholeheartedly agree with the idea that TRP gives GNamer that NGamer feeling of being tied to a mag and as for BtH. . . For the sheer effort if nothing else it deserves the plaudits. I do like to imagine forcing someone unfamiliar with The Nicest Corner of the Internet to read it; in jokes on top of in jokes with a healthy dose of nonsense. |

| The final gaming award! The 3DS vote was slightly bigger, because more people on the forum have 3DSes (although I'd say there's never been a better time to get a Wii U[/gosen]), but I still think we're finishing off with the big one: The Pikmin 3 Award for Wii U Game of the Year (13 votes, including two people mentioning two games each, and another five-for)(This time, two people tried to submit a vote for WWHD - the Zelda games' appeal transcends the years!) Bronze Medal- Spoiler:
Bayonetta 2/1 and 2 (12 points, two firsts/two seconds/two thirds: two votes mentioned Bayo 1 as well)"Bayo in a Link costume. Madness." "How can this not be number 1 it's just fantastic" "I like punching/slashing things and Bayo does it best" "Just an incredible pair of games. Sure, there's a bit of ass and titties and there's some blood and swearing, but what it boils down to is a great central character who controls excellently and has a perfect link with the player. This is the most Nintendo game ever not made by Nintendo." "Spectacularly stylish; a fantastic advert for Wii U." Silver Medal- Spoiler:
Mario Kart 8 (21 points, four firsts/four seconds/one third)"A bawhair fae perfection." "Easily the best in the series. The gameplay is so fluid and balanced it makes previous entries look awful. DLC is appreciated as well as Amiibo support for nice differentiation online." "I like the bit where you hit people with items and win races." "Sometimes Nintendo franchise sequels feel a bit "emptier"; not this time. Still fun months later, and just when we were worried about it getting stale, Nintendo do DLC correctly; a bunch of stuff you actually want." "The best Mario Kart. Done." "The best Mario Kart. The best racing game. Heck, the best local multiplayer experience. And the DLC is only making it better. A decent Battle Mode away from perfection." (A bawhair-proportioned battle mode, perhaps? - Ed.)"The DLC elevates this to the top of the list. On-line has never been so fun, either." And the winner is...- Spoiler:
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (23 points, five firsts/four seconds)"Do I even have to say anything for this?" "Eclipses Brawl in its basic mechanics, and Mêlée in everything else. Fast-paced, fun, colourful, full of fanservice, and allowing Shulk to fight Mega Man, Palutena, and the Duck Hunt Dog, on a Pilotwings plane. What more could a fan of the series want? Well, they could want it to feel less rushed. Not to the same extent of its 3DS counterpart, but the copious use of retro courses, the Miis with hardly any moves of their own, and the paucity of new remixes all grate. But hey: it'll keep you going for years in single-player alone, and if you should ever get seven friends around the TV, well... (Still no playable Ridley, though. Sniff.)" "I like punching people/kicking people off the screen" "So much love, effort and fanservice put into this game." "The best one yet, great cast of characters, good game modes and customization. Its just really fun." "They filled it with everything. EVERYTHING! Even that Japanese game about the kid who is a prince who becomes a frog and stuff. I'm glad I played this version first." "Voted for this in the same breath as Melee…though it’s perhaps even better." Fourth Place- Spoiler:
Hyrule Warriors (7 points, one first/one second/two thirds)"A game that felt like it was custom made for me; I love the Dynasty Warriors games and I love Zelda. While this could have gotten away with being a Warriors game with Zelda art assets pasted in, it was instead a perfect distillation and celebration of everything that makes each series special." "Samurai Warriors x Zelda to amazing effect. So much DLC and extra content, I'm still plowing through it." "The shock pick going to 3rd it's technically rubbish but it's just so much dam fun" Fifth Place- Spoiler:
Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition (5 points, one second/three thirds)"A Metroidvania game that never stops being fun to play due to the superb constrol scheme. Maybe less bouncy lady wrestler next time." "Such energy, colour, wit, gameplay and fun." "The exploration solid, the combat frenetic, the pop-culture references surprisingly funny. Playstation fans have been bleating about this for ages, and finally I can understand why. Its only real flaw is its length - I'd love a longer sequel." "What more do you need? A Metroid-like connected world, great combat system & a Luchador that gains special powers from a Goat Mentor. Absolutamente brillante!" Commended (and highly commended and so on)- Spoiler:
Shovel Knight (three points, one first) "I just love everything about this (the world, art style, characters & the music) & I don't see myself getting tired of playing it either which is the sign of a classic for me."
Bayonetta (two points, one second) (Does it deserve to go in with Bayos 1 & 2? Should it be considered part of the package? Does it really matter? The answer to the last bit, in case you're wondering, is "no": Bayo 2 would have come third regardless - Rambling Ed.)
(one point, one third each) Thomas was Alone "Every so often a game comes along that redefines what a game can be. This was 2014's, for me." Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Scram Kitty and his Buddy on Rails I says- Spoiler:
Yes yes, obvious outcome. The best Smash and the best Mario Kart went toe-to-toe, and while it didn't quite come down to the wire, it was a good contest. And arguably the best action game came in third.
So to pad this section out, Balla's completely unofficial dowloadables vote! I know that this isn't what you hoped for, but maybe the idea can go further next year.
Third is tricky, but I'm giving it to Child of Light, which mustered not only three points (as did quite a few other downloadables), but also got two honourable mentions, as you will soon see. Second Guacamelee, with five votes right here. And first is Shovel Knight, finally not robbed, with nine votes across all platforms, and without anyone voting for it twice. Well done, Yacht Club Games!
Honourable mentions up soon! |
