So, recap movie #2 has revealed a new closer to the manga ending for the Female Titan arc to get folks ready for the next season.
Watched the crappy rip, gotta say Hanji was badass, and it would seem at least some of my suspisions about the religion were wrong. Season 2 now plz.
In the meantime there's Attack on Titan: Junior High airing at the moment. Anyone watching that? I'll probably watch it at some point, no idea when though as I'm super lazy when it comes to watching anime.

Oh Japan.

It seems like a harmless spoof/spinoff to me. Hasn't done what I suspect you fear it might (fanservice ect) from what few images I've seen of it are.

The name concerns me, but I might check it out. I've been watching Dragon Ball Super, and I never really like to watch more than one anime at the same time.

No idea if I'm honest. Something about a school where titans and the kids live in peace or something.

Don't worry, Jay: I've done some research into it.

ATTENTION CARTOON NERDS
Yes, the one and only Luke "Buskalilly" "Drunkalilly" Jonathan James Summerhayes, the Master Cheese, the reigning, defending world Excite Truck Champion of the World has recently concluded watching the first season of Attack on Titan. He deems it: good.

There we are. Attack on Titan gets to live another day.
Did you go into it unspoiled Drunka?

Started watching this a few months ago, when I heard Omega Force were making a game. Dynasty Warriors with giant enemies and Spider-man swinging? Sign me up! I watched a few and loved it but kept putting off finishing it because stuff with subtitles is difficult to watch while doing other things and my attention span is awful. Amelia at work got me talking about it and spurred me on to going back, and I'm glad she did!

Other than a few vague things I'd seen on twitter when I wasn't following the show, I went in mostly blind. I knew someone turned into a Titan, though until Eren was eaten I actually thought it would be Armin. Other than that, completely blind! I was so absorbed I couldn't stop watching.
I watched it with subtitles; when I tried the dub, some of the voices didn't feel like they fit the characters for me so I switched back.
Right now, I'm weighing up whether to wait for season 2 or read the manga. Other people have waited a heck of a lot longer than I will be, but Amelia has read it and makes me really want to every time she mentions it.
Overall though, I loved it to bits. I like giant monsters, and this used them well. I like beautifully tragic stories about hope in the face of hopelessness and this was a great one; something of the visuals of the titans looming over people and eating them reminded me of War of the Worlds' tripods, and the Martians stealing blood. And my favourite thing in the world is Spider-Man, and the heroes in this were like Spidey with swords! (except Eren, who was just a shit Hulk).

I've not tried the dub - I'll probably watch it once Series 2 begins so I can remind myself what happened. As for the manga, I tried getting into it but it was getting way too fucking mental, so I stopped.

I might have been too tired and not concentrating enough to make sense of it, but I couldn't really follow what the crack was going on the narrative jumped around so much in the manga.
The only problem I had with the show was how one-dimensional non-scouts were. If you're not a scout, you're a dick.
The part where the scouts all move out on that expedition though, those were five or six quality episodes.

That was it for me too. The anime tidies up the plot and makes it easier to follow.

There were one or two alright guys, but it did that common fiction things where people could only turn out to be good people if they completely agree with the heroes on everything. I do like how the story seems to be moving towards a bit of a class thing, people rising up and that. That always resonates with me. The next anime I've moved onto and that angle is all that keeps the excessive bum-and-boob shots from overpowering the action and comedy so I switch off. Viva la revolution!

Yasssss. The only real bit where two Spider-men fight eachother, I hope we get more of that.

I'm reading the manga! I went from the start, and I've just overtaken the first TV season now. I much prefer the manga's back-and-forth storytelling, but things can feel a bit more rushed than they do in the animé. I also really like the kinetic action on the TV, and the fact that Eren occasionally accomplishes things.

GET. F***ING. HYPED!
Not going to lie, my hype kinda sorta completely got bitten off at the spinal chord because of how long the wait has been, but seeing actual news and a definite date brings the hype back full blown, especially with this bloody epic key art! Finally some more Armoured and Colossal Titan action!!

I have now caught up on the entire manga and purchased Wings of Freedom with my birthday money.
Thoughts to follow.

Drunka's AoT Thoughts
The Manga
I'm well into the manga! After the first week of a month, I'm checking the naughty websites a couple of times a day to see if there's been an update. I can see how people found the back-and-forth narrative disorienting, but I preferred it to the animé giving us several episodes in a row where nothing happened, then all the action in one go, then back to nothing happening . . .
I don't think any of you are as up to date as me, so I want to tread carefully. I'm reading it as it comes out in Japan now and you are in for such a treat with future seasons of the show . . .
General feelings without specifics:
I'm sure I read somewhere that Hajime Isayama had the plot planned out for 100 volumes from the start (we're on 88 at the moment, so not long left if he sticks to it!) and I'm inclined to believe him. Some stories which revolve around big mysteries can be ruined by answers, but Attack on Titan manages to satisfyingly answer everything, and it succesfully flips absolutely everything on its head and makes perfect internal sense. Very impressive stuff.
Slightly more spoilery but obviously not gonna mention the big reveals:
I guessed the big twist right, and the last three issues have been absolutely mind blowing. In the manga after the anime there has been some really cool stuff I can't wait to see in the anime and hopefully to play in a videogame. Some awesome action set-pieces, including very cool fights between multiple groups of ODM-equipped humans.
Attack On Titan: Wings of Freedom This is a bloody good videogame! The sensation of movement on the ODM gear is captured perfectly. In terms of action games where the thrill comes from the physical act of character movement, this is up there with Spider-Man 2, Vanquish or Titanfall 2.The fact that it's built around very good missions is almost a bonus. It's made by Omega Force, of Dynasty Warriors fame, so the general premise sees you dropped into battlefields where individual enemies aren't necessarily hard to kill but managing the overall battlefield, where allies and enemies and objectives are, and knowing where you need to be to do the most good is key. At first I didn't think this was the best fit for the licence, as the Titans should be dangerous. It was when I played as Armin I realised it made perfect sense. When I'm Mikasa, or Levi, or Titan Eren, I would be mowing down Titans like a badass. As Armin, though, every Titan I met was a real challenge if I tried to fight them head on; his moveset is actually all about leading a squad of soldiers and ordering them tactically, rather than doing the swordwork solo. I'm not far in yet, but whenever I get the urge to sit down and get stuck in I have a whale of a time. There's a part of me that wants to make this my surprise GOTY.
Anticipation for Season 2 As I alluded to earlier, there are some crazy action set-pieces coming up which I can't wait for you guys to see. At the same time, I'm worried Season 2 won't cover enough of the manga to get to the real shit, so I need y'all to get reading. I need people to talk to!
Final Thoughts on Attack On Titan
It's really bloody good. Atmospherically grim, heart poundingly exciting. No matter how bleak it gets, there's always a glimmer of hope, which is my favourite kind of fiction. It reminds me of Game of Thrones. Everyone talks about it in terms of lots of death, "don't get attached to your favourite characters", but actually the death mostly happens adjacent to the primary cast.
